These days, you can sit on your couch and get a pretty accurate answer to the age-old question: “What’s my trade-in worth?”As online used car retailers streamline the buying process, they’re creating more convenient ways to handle car-buying’s Achilles’ heel, the trade-in. And, with the current used car shortage caused by the pandemic, you might get a surprisingly high price selling your car to them rather than trading it in.You don’t have to sell, of course; you’re just finding out what your trade-in is worth in the most accurate way possible — the price someone will actually pay. Here’s what the process looks like, and how you can use the results.Places to get a quote onlineAlthough there may be other places in your area to trade in or sell your car, there are currently three companies dominating online used car sales: Carvana, Shift and Vroom. These companies allow you to self-appraise your car and get a quote to either sell your car or trade it in for one of theirs. The transaction and paperwork are touchless. Not all these companies are nationwide, and your vehicle will be inspected by a company representative — and the offer possibly adjusted — before you get your money.Another way to sell or trade your car is through CarMax, a used car superstore with outlets in 40 states and an in-person appraisal process that takes about 45 minutes. It may be easier to look up your car’s value on Edmunds.com, where you can get a CarMax quote without even having to go to one of its car lots.A real-world comparison testBefore starting the appraisal process, I checked pricing guide Kelley Blue Book, known as KBB, to get an idea of my cars’ trade-in values at a dealer, then collected online offers from CarMax, Carvana, Vroom and Shift. On these sites, you can fill in information manually or supply your car’s license plate number or 17-digit vehicle identification number to fetch precise year, make, model and trim. They’ll ask you about options on the car, color, if the car has been smoked in, and any warning lights or body damage. You’ll typically get an offer in minutes. Here are the results for my 2014 Volkswagen SportWagen TDI with 41,000 miles:KBB trade-in estimate: ,213.Lowest purchase offer (CarMax): ,700.Best purchase offer (Carvana): ,067.I ran the same numbers for my son’s 2016 Mazda3 Sport with 72,732 miles:KBB trade-in estimate: ,085.Lowest purchase offer (Vroom): ,750.Best purchase offer (Shift): ,100.And a friend let me run his 2019 Honda Civic Si with 4,200 miles:KBB trade-in estimate: ,225.Lowest purchase offer (CarMax): ,700.Best purchase offer (Carvana): ,077.As you can see, pricing is highly variable. The more sources you contact, the better.Do you really get that much? These companies promise a no-haggle, fair price for your trade-in. But does the price change when the company’s representative shows up and goes over your car with a fine-toothed comb?Sometimes, sellers omit important aspects of their car’s condition such as frame damage from an accident or rust, says Toby Russell, co-CEO of Shift. In these cases, after a physical inspection, the price is reduced. However, there are times when a customer gets more for a car because market conditions have changed. If a customer is transparent when describing a vehicle’s condition, “we don’t anticipate having to make adjustments to our offers,” says Carvana spokesperson Amy O’Hara. “But we are prepared should the situation arise.”Online comments on sites such as Reddit support these statements. Most consumers found the trade-in or sales process at these companies to be fast, transparent and convenient.Don’t forget the sales taxWith these figures in hand, you are in a position of strength when you visit an actual dealer. In most states, if you trade in your car, you pay sales tax only on the difference between the cost of the new car and your old one. If your new car is ,000 and you are getting ,000 for your trade-in, you pay sales tax on the difference: ,000. In a state with a 10% sales tax, you saved ,000 by trading in.That should be a consideration if a dealer’s offer doesn’t quite measure up to the offers you get online or through CarMax.Let the dealer make you its best offer. Tell the used car manager, the internet sales office or the salesperson that you’ve already appraised your car on pricing guides and gotten quotes from online retailers. You don’t need to share the offers you have — just ask for their best price.Factor in the sales tax before you reject anything, but with backup offers it’s easy to walk away, sell the car independently and return with cash to strike a better deal.More From NerdWalletWill You Get a Refund If COVID-19 Closes Your Campus?College Going Online? Three UCLA basketball players accused of shoplifting in China last week were flying back to Los Angeles on Tuesday, the commissioner of the Pacific-12 athletic conference said, hours after US President Donald Trump said he asked his Chinese counterpart to help in the case. The three freshmen -- LiAngelo Ball, Cody Riley and Jalen Hill -- were allowed to leave China on the US-bound flight after the situation was "resolved to the satisfaction of the Chinese authorities," said Larry Scott, commissioner of the Pac-12 Conference, of which UCLA is a member."We are all very pleased that these young men have been allowed to return home to their families and university," Scott said in a news releaseThe three were arrested last week while their team was in the Chinese city of Hangzhou ahead of the squad's season opener in Shanghai. They were questioned on suspicion of stealing sunglasses from a Louis Vuitton store near their hotel. The trio stayed at the hotel, reportedly awaiting next steps in their case, while their teammates went to Shanghai, where UCLA defeated Georgia Tech 63-60 on Saturday. The three also remained in China as their team returned to the United States over the weekend.Scott did not say how the case was resolved; a conviction of grand larceny in China could result in years of prison. But Trump said Tuesday that he had asked Chinese President Xi Jinping to help.UCLA's trip coincided with Trump's two-day state visit to the Chinese capital, Beijing, as part of his 13-day trip to Asia. Trump told reporters Tuesday that Xi had been helpful in working to resolve the case.Scott acknowledged Trump, among others, in his statement."We are grateful for the role that our Chinese hosts played, and for the courtesy and professionalism of the local authorities," Scott said. "We also want to acknowledge UCLA's significant efforts on behalf of their student-athletes."Finally, we want to thank the President, the White House and the US State Department for their efforts towards resolution."Trump's request was first reported by the Washington Post.  2086

This might be the mother of all potholes. Officer Clark of the Grand Blanc Township Police Department, who stands at six feet five inches, stood inside a culvert washout in the middle of McWain Road to show how bad the road is. Police are working to get the pothole fixed right away. The road is closed while construction is done. 353

The year's race for Kansas governor has the second-largest field since 1908 — seven Republicans and five Democrats are on the ballot. With a field so large, candidates are now paying for more ads on TV and launching bus tours. It's an effort to win your vote for the primary.University of Kansas political science professor Patrick Miller said the crowded field could be the reason why some candidates and their running mates are taking unconventional measures. Specifically, using their own money to self-fund their campaigns."A lot of big donors want to support the party and they don't want to intervene in the primaries," said Miller.Independent Greg Orman has spent 0,000 of his own money on his campaign.Republican Secretary of State Kris Kobach's running mate, Wink Hartman, has given or loaned the campaign more than .5 million."It is bizarrely unusual. Extraordinary unusual," said Miller. The crowded field, Miller said, could also have an impact on how many votes a candidate gets —especially on the Republican side.Gov. Jeff Colyer has launched an ad campaign, warning voters "a vote for [Ken Selzer, Jim Barnett or Patrick Kucera] is essentially a vote for Kris Kobach."These candidates are sometimes referred to as spoiler candidates, who draw votes from a major candidate with similar politics and could cause a strong opponent to consequently win.Miller said this happened in the 2016 presidential election with Jill Stein taking voters away from Hillary Clinton."In the primary you have four or five candidates splitting the vote, who are all generally conservative," he said, agreeing this could give Kobach an advantage. "If you don't like his personality or his controversy, you might go vote for Jeff Colyer, who is less controversial, or Ken Selzer, Jim Barnett or any of the other candidates. As the days get closer to primary day, Miller said to expect more knocks at the door, fliers, ads to air on TV and on the radio and so forth. He said the candidate's final push won't necessarily be about issues but rather their personalities and stylistic differences that separate them from the others."In the primaries, that matters," he said. 2170

The year 2020 has proven it knows how to challenge people who live in places like the Gulf Coast.Multiple storms slammed the state of Louisiana and the city of Lake Charles.Dr. Tyson Green lost his home in Hurricane Laura in August. His family evacuated before the storm as he rode it out in a Lake Charles hospital so he could be close to his patients. His community now faces a recovery that is expected to take years.“I don't know how you begin to put it into words, to be honest with you. We’ve had a tough year, to say the least," Green said. "I think with the combination of the pandemic, the hurricanes, the resurgence of the pandemic that beat us while we were down, it’s been rough, but we are getting better we are coming together as a community."Since the storm, he's raised money for nurses and healthcare workers who were impacted by Mother Nature this year. His GoFundMe has raised more than ,000 dollars. The money raised is key, especially during the holiday season."It was such a blessing to be able to give them something through the GoFundMe efforts that we did. The ability to give them a better Christmas, people that lost everything, even the people who lost what they had and were reimbursed by whatever means insurance or FEMA, they still didn't have the means. They still didn’t have the extra money that we need around the holidays for their kids," Green said.2020's hurricane season broke several records. Thirteen of the 30 named storms became hurricanes during 2020's hurricane season. 1524
