(KGTV) - Chula Vista Police are asking the public for help solving three hit-and-run cases that have remained unsolved since January of last year — two of which resulted in deaths.The first occurred on Jan. 22, 2017, at about 6:45 p.m. at the intersection of Broadway and G Street. Police said 43-year-old Rafael Cruz Fermin was hit by a vehicle traveling southbound on Broadway. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene in what was described as a red, 2002-2005 Ford Explorer or Mercury Mountaineer.Fermin died at the scene, despite being given first aid. Read more.The second incident was on Sept. 14, 2017, at about 7:30 p.m. in the 700 block of E Street. A driver struck a 52-year-old man between the McDonald's and Motel 6, before fleeing the area. The victim was left with severe internal injuries, of which police say he still suffers from.The driver, described as a possibly older, white man with short white or blonde hair, was last seen in a gold, older model Pontiac, Lincoln, or Buick. The vehicle has a partial plate of "5BK." CHULA VISTA (CNS) - Two San Diego County congressmen called on United Technologies Corp. Monday to reconsider plans to lay off roughly 300 employees at the company's Chula Vista manufacturing plant as it looks toward shuttering the facility entirely.Reps. Juan Vargas, D-Chula Vista, and Scott Peters, D-San Diego, joined California Sens. Dianne Feinstein and Kamala Harris to push back against the layoffs. Vargas and Peters also requested that the company answer a list of questions about how UTC decided to shutter the plant and how involved the machinists union was in the discussion.UTC notified workers in July of the company's plan to close the factory by 2020."We understand that complex domestic and international markets factor into these difficult decisions; however, we note that UTC's company website says it creates products for one of the ‘fastest growing industries on the planet,"' Vargas and Peters said in a letter to UTC Aerospace Systems President David Gitlin. "This robust characterization of the industry seems to conflict with the decision to eliminate hundreds of production jobs."UTC's plant in Chula Vista has operated since 1940 and produces engine pods and mounts for aerospace companies like Boeing and Airbus. The union representing the workers charges UTC with moving its manufacturing plants to Mexico to take advantage of cheaper wages."We hope UTC reconsiders its decision to shut down its manufacturing facility in Chula Vista," said Robert Martinez Jr., president of the International Association of Machinists. CHULA VISTA, Calif (KGTV) -- Students in the south bay could get free lunches this June. The Sweetwater Union High School District announced Monday that its popular meal program is making a comeback. Called the “Seamless Summer Feeding Program,” free meals are being offered for most of June. According to the district, the free meals are available to anyone 18 and younger. The program runs from June 10 through June 28 Monday through Friday from 11:15 to 11:45 a.m. The free lunches are being offered at Montgomery High School and Sweetwater Union High. According to the district, no registration is needed. “Just come and enjoy some great food,” a flyer from the district reads. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — A suspected drunk driver had to be pulled from a vehicle after a rollover crash in the South Bay overnight.Police said the driver drove into two parked cars while driving southbound on Broadway at about 2 a.m. Saturday. After hitting one vehicle, her vehicle rolled into the middle of the street.The vehicle she struck collided with a nearby SUV, police said.Emergency crews extricated the woman from her vehicle and took her to a nearby hospital with moderate injuries.Chula Vista Police later arrested the woman for driving under the influence.No one else was injured in the crash. 620
