LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) — East County residents say they're behind a local dog rescue's efforts to provide for canines, but that the facility has been operating dangerously.Suzy Avalos lives next door to the Happy Hearts German Shepherd Rescue, which is run out of a La Mesa home. She tells 10News the dogs that reside in the yard have had no problem jumping the fence."You see the fence is not high. It's right up here. The dogs don't have a problem jumping over this fence," Avalos said. "I've lived here for 10 years and it's just progressively getting worse."RELATED: Disease fatal to dogs that can spread to humans on the rise in some statesWhen the dogs escape they can also be aggressive, neighbors say, with at least one dangerous incident being recorded. 10News obtained records from the La Mesa Police Department showing at least 28 instances where officers responded to the dog rescue to help round up escaped canines or help people who say they were attacked by the dogs."We have a lot of people on this street that have young kids and I'm just worried a child is going to get bit or something worse is going to happen," Avalos said. "They're out of control and she should not have a license."The woman who runs the dog rescue, Donna, declined an interview by 10News. While they support the idea of rescuing the dogs, they say it needs to be done more responsibly. (KGTV) - A La Mesa woman is on the hunt for clues, after she made a startling discovery near a sidewalk during a walk.Along scenic Explorer Road, Patty Serrano was finishing up a walk with a friend one afternoon two Fridays ago, when something on the ground caught her eye."First of all shock. Why is this on the ground? I picked it up. Dried it and flattened it," said Serrano.The document was a Plank Owner Certificate. Serrano, a retired Navy officer, knew exactly what that meant. "I knew those are rare, issued to people who are the first crew members of a ship," said Serrano.The certificates aren't official Navy documents. They are created and distributed by crew members. The ship attached to this certificate was the U.S.S. LIPAN, Texas – A man in Texas is dead after a possible mountain lion attack and officials are warning nearby residents to keep young children inside at night as they search for the animal.Around 3:30 p.m. last Thursday, deputies with the Hood County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 15000 block of Howell Rd. in Lipan in reference to a missing person call.Deputies were told Christopher Allen Whiteley, 28, was missing and last seen on Wednesday, in the early morning hours.Deputies checked a wooded area nearby and eventually found Whiteley deceased, the sheriff's office said.Preliminary findings show Whiteley died from a wild animal attack, possibly a mountain lion.The sheriff’s office has contacted a governmental trapper with the USDA, who specializes in tracking and removing mountain lions. Officers said they'll work with the trapper and Texas game wardens to locate the animal.The sheriff's office urged the Lipan community to be mindful of their surrounding and to keep their young children and animals inside at night.“The safety of Hood County citizens are my priority one, but please don’t interfere with the process of locating the animal and stay clear of the area being actively worked by officials," said Hood County Sheriff Roger Deeds.Whiteley’s body was sent to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.This story was originally published by Thalia Brionez at KXXV. 1415

(CNS) - Helicopters made water-dropping sorties Thursday morning on fast-moving, out-of-control wildfire, which was 0% contained after scorching 10,500 acres in the Lake Hughes area, prompting the mandatory evacuation of at least 100 structures.The Lake Fire was reported at about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday near North Lake Hughes Road and Pine Canyon Road in the Angeles National Forest, according to Marvin Lim of the Los Angeles County Fire Department, which was battling the blaze along with Angeles National Forest crews, as well as assistance from the Los Angeles, Culver City, Beverly Hills, Monterery Park and Santa Monica fire departments.ABC 10News learned teams from Rancho Santa Fe, Vista Fire, San Miguel Fire, Lakeside Fire, Oceanside Fire, Camp Pendleton, Pala Reservation, San Pasqual, and likely San Diego Fire-Rescue were dispatched to assist in the firefighting effort.Three San Diego County strike teams will also respond, with each team bringing five trucks.As of 7 a.m. Thursday, the fire's size was listed as 10,500 acres, with three structures destroyed and 5,420 threatened, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. No injuries have been reported.The fire west of Palmdale had a "rapid rate of spread," amid temperatures in the mid-90s, low humidity and gusty winds, according to the U.S. Forest Service. The forest service and county fire departments quickly called in second-alarm responses.The fire "will continue to grow and threaten the surrounding communities of Lake Hughes, Leona Valley, Lake Elizabeth, Pine Canyon and Three Points," the Los Angeles County Fire Department said about 10 p.m. Wednesday, adding air operations would continue overnight.By 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, the flames had burned 400 acres, and officials said the fire had the potential to burn 1,000 acres, according the department.
