The gunman had fatally shot himself by the time officers arrived.Tallahassee yogis as well as the health care and college communities are mourning the victims: Maura Binkley, 21, and Nancy Van Vessem, 61.On Sunday evening, FSU students and faculty came together for a vigil honoring Van Vessem -- a faculty member -- and Binkley, a student.The crowd gathered on Langford Green on Sunday evening and held up battery-powered tea candles that flickered under an overcast sky as a small choir sang, "Hymn to the Garnet and Gold.""Our hearts are broken as we gather to mourn the loss of two members of our Florida State University family and offer prayers for those who were injured and affected by this horrific attack. Scott Walker and steer the state back to the left after eight years of Republican rule.First, though, the party will have to use Tuesday's primary to sort through its own crowded field of little-known candidates to find a nominee to oppose Walker.Tuesday's primaries in two key Upper Midwestern states -- Wisconsin and Minnesota -- will kick off Democrats' midterm push to capitalize on President Donald Trump's unpopularity and wrest back the dominant positions they once held in the states.The two states will join Ohio, Michigan and Illinois on the list of Midwestern battlegrounds with governor's offices on the ballot this fall that Democrats believe they can win.Walker, who frustrated Democrats in 2010, rolled back union rights in 2011, survived a 2012 recall election, and won again in 2014, looks vulnerable this year. A recent poll by NBC News/Marist found him trailing his potential challenger Tony Evers. He has warned Republicans repeatedly that the party faces an enthusiasm gap. And the progressive candidate's victory in a state Supreme Court election earlier this year buoyed the left's hopes there.In Wisconsin's wide-open Democratic gubernatorial primary, the leading candidate is Evers, who has been the state superintendent of public instruction since 2009.Polls have shown him with a lead of at least three-to-one. But it's not a federal holiday.A Texas woman has been fighting to make that happen for years. And for civil rights activist Opal Lee, it's personal.On Juneteenth about 80 years ago, a mob of some 500 white supremacists tried to scare Lee’s family out of their home in Fort Worth, Texas.“My father came with a gun and the police told him if he busted a cap, they would let the mob have us,” said Lee. “The paper said the police said the crowd was so large, they couldn't control them, but they tore that house apart. They burned furniture.”Lee is now 93 years old, and she's dedicated her life to education and activism. In 2016, she he walked from Texas to D.C. to advocate for Juneteenth to become an official national holiday.Even a pandemic won't stop her.
