Tyson Foods may lay off more than 400 workers in the South Bay in an effort to become more efficient and save money.It would be the biggest layoff in San Diego County in more than a year.The company filed a layoff notice with the state this month saying it had to let 401 workers go from its Circle Foods label plant in Otay Mesa. "Tyson Foods, Inc. regrets that its team members at the San Diego, California facility must be permanently displaced yet hopes to accomplish this plant closing with the least possible disruption of lives of the tema members, their families, and the community," the notice says.Many of the workers make Mexican frozen food on the factory's assemblyline.A team from the San Diego Workforce Partnership has already been to the factory twice to help the workers find new opportunities. Also, Windsor Foods is buying Tyson's plant to expand its Mexican frozen food offerings. While it does plan to eliminate three tortilla lines, company VIce President Paul Taylor said the Windsor hopes to keep as many of the workers as possible.Andy Hall, chief operating officer of the San Diego Workforce Partnership, said he doesn't see the layoffs as a larger trend. After all, the unemployment rate is now near a 17-year-low of 3.3 percent. The layoffs are expected to occur by the end of April. Tyson in a statement said it is working on a transition plan with Windsor Foods, but will retain some operations here. Two people were shot and killed at a Kroger store in Jeffersontown, Kentucky, the police chief said Wednesday.The suspect is in custody, according to Chief Sam Rogers. There was no known motive and it appears the victims were shot at random, he said.The unidentified suspect entered the store and fired multiple shots at a man inside, killing him. The suspect left, encountered a woman in the parking lot and fatally shot her, Roger said.An unnamed armed citizen in the parking lot exchanged gunfire with the suspect; neither was struck. The suspect fled the scene and was apprehended nearby, police said.A Jeffersontown police dispatcher said officers remain on the scene."We are shocked and saddened by the shooting incident that occurred around 2:30 p.m. today," Kroger said. "Thanks to the quick response of the local police department, the suspect was apprehended and our store is now secure."Jeffersontown is about 13 miles southeast of Louisville.Federal law enforcement agencies are aiding in the investigation.Jeffersontown police Maj. Tumblr, a popular blog service owned and operated by Yahoo, says it will ban "adult content" from its site on Dec. 17.The decision comes just weeks after the Tumblr app was temporarily removed from Apple's App Store after child pornography was found on the site. Tumblr said in a statement to The Verge that the decision to ban adult content did not stem from that incident.Tumblr's new policy bans "explicit sexual content" and most instances of nudity. The site added that nudity "found in art," as well as nudity in the context of health-related situations and in the context of political protest or newsworthy events would still be permitted.Tumblr also says that written erotica will still be permitted on the site.After Dec. 17, any explicit content flagged by algorithms will be hidden from public view but not deleted from the site. Vaccinating children has become a hot topic in the last decade, as arguments often play out on social media, leaving some parents unsure and doctors scrambling to get them the right information. Not too long ago, all mother Megan Whelan was thinking about was how to vaccinate her children."With all the information that's out there all the celebrities who are you know spreading their stories And of course all the blog posts and things you see on Facebook and all of that," Whelan said. "It can be really overwhelming."She decided to take her doctor's advice, but said it would have been nice to have other options for trusted information."I think to be able to go to one place where you can hear both sides of the story would be really interesting," Whelan said. "And you know, where you could hear from of course doctors other professionals but even just a panel of moms."Researchers wanted to know if providing parents with accurate clinical information about vaccines through a website with access to vaccine experts would impact their attitudes about them. They found out it did.Dr. Matthew Daley, a senior researcher at Kaiser Permanente, paneled a group of soon-to-be parents. His team gave some parents vaccine information from a website, others information from a website, social media, blogs, podcasts and chats, and others standard care. Daley's team found that website and social interaction improved attitudes toward vaccines in parents who were hesitant about them."Specifically their confidence in the benefits of vaccines improved," Dr. Daley said.
