TAMPA, Fla. — An alarming new study found certain engines in Kia and Hyundai vehicles are more likely to catch fire than any other vehicles on the road, according to a report by Scripps affiliate WFTS-TV in Tampa.Matt Moore, who oversaw the engine study at the Highway Loss Data Institute, reported Kia and Hyundai vehicles with two-liter, turbocharged engines were more than three times more likely to catch fire than engines in any other similar-sized vehicle on U.S. roads.“These things tend to be very catastrophic,” Moore told I-Team Investigator Jackie Callaway. “An increase of three and half a times the control population is a serious problem.”Those engines are found in 2011 to 2015 Kia Optima, 2011 to 2014 Hyundai Sonatas and 2013 to 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe Sports.The automakers have recalled most of those vehicles since January. Hyundai points out that it started recalling vehicles back in 2015 and again in 2017. The automakers have yet to recall all vehicles running on another potentially hazardous engine – a 2.4-liter model that the institute found is nearly two times more likely to catch fire. The automaker does say however that they have recalled many models that contained the 2.4 liter engine.That was the same engine in Kirstin Wilson’s 2016 Kia Sportage when it burst into flames as she drove down a Georgia highway last summer.“It literally blew up in front of us with all of our stuff in it,” said Wilson.But Wilson’s SUV is not among the hundreds of thousands of models Kia recently recalled for fire hazards.A Kia spokesman said the automaker negotiated a resolution with Wilson because she only owned the vehicle for one month before the incident.Fernanda Krueger’s 2016 Kia Sorento is also not on the recall list – even though her SUV with a 2.4-liter engine burned up last April in San Diego.“I was driving with my car on fire,” said Krueger.Kia and Hyundai have recalled nearly 700,000 vehicles since January, but the Center for Auto Safety told the I-Team that’s still not enough. Last year, Jason Levine of the the Center for Auto Safety petitioned federal regulators to force the automakers to recall 2.9 million vehicles.“There are probably several million vehicles between the two manufactures Kia and Hyundai that remain not at a recall status that remain potentially a fire risk,” said Levine.Insurance claim records show more Kia and Hyundai vehicles are catching fire than have been reported to government regulators.Those records show more than 2,700 fires in just five models alone – 2011 to 15 Kia Optima, 2011 to 14 Hyundai Sonata, 2011 to 15 Kia Sorento, 2011 to 12 Hyundai Santa Fe and 2013 to 14 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport.The automakers wouldn’t answer questions directly about whether they would expand the recall, but said safety is a top priority.Statement from Kia Motors America:Kia Motors America (KMA) recognizes that customer safety is paramount and is committed to addressing every thermal incident. Shortly after the body of 52-year-old Vanita Gray was found in her SUV on Houston Whittier at Hayes on Detroit's east side, her boyfriend drove up to a Detroit police scout car and told officers that someone killed his girlfriend. A source said that Gray's 52-year-old boyfriend, who was armed with a gun, also told police that he shot the person who killed her, but the source says the boyfriend didn't have details to support his claim.The only thing police knew for sure was that Gray was dead from multiple gunshot wounds after someone opened fire on her in her SUV. Someone called 911 around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday to report a vehicle on the side of the road with bullet holes in the windshield.Twenty-one shell casings were found in the area with some of the bullets hitting the glass window of a nearby furniture store. And it didn't take long for police to go from calling Gray's boyfriend a person of interest to the suspect in her murder. Gray and her boyfriend were living together in a home, less than a mile from where she was killed. She was wearing flip flops and lounge clothes. Gray was reportedly employed in a rehab center. Her boyfriend was on disability, according to his relatives. Right now, Gray's boyfriend, who is on probation for retail fraud, has not been charged with her murder. Seven passengers were taken to hospitals when a Hawaiian Airlines flight landed in Honolulu on Thursday morning with smoke in the cabin and cargo hold, officials said.The passengers had "smoke-related symptoms," Hawaiian Airlines said in a statement.The smoke buildup happened because oil was leaking "onto hot parts of the plane's engine and air conditioning pressurization system," according to a statement released by the airline, which blamed the leak on a failed seal.Daniel K. Inouye International Airport Fire Chief Glenn Mitchell described the passengers' injuries as "minor respiratory" in nature. The seven injured were five adults and two children, airline Chief Operating Officer Jon Snook said.The flight from Oakland, California, made its emergency landing around 11:30 a.m. HT. The other 177 passengers and the seven crew members were bused to the terminal.The smoke began filling the cabin 20 minutes before the plane's arrival, he said."We sincerely apologize to our passengers for this incident and thank them for their cooperation in the evacuation," the airline statement said.No oxygen masks were deployed to passengers. Snook said the crew didn't want to pump oxygen into the aircraft when there might be a fire. The crew donned smoke masks, he said.The crew deployed the plane's emergency slides for the evacuation, which officials said took between 30 and 45 seconds.Because halon was used in the cargo hold, it will take some time to get luggage back to the passengers, Snook said.
