SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A 58-year-old man severely injured after an assault at a home in Clairemont in early April died Monday. According to police, 58-year-old Randy Taing died of his injuries in the evening of April 8. San Diego Police said the incident occurred in the 4100 block of Ashford St. before 12 p.m. The man reportedly called his wife sometime around 11:45 a.m., though his wife said the phone was silent.She asked her son to call, who got through to his dad. That's when the man told his son something along the lines of a possible break-in, police say.The man's son called 9-1-1 and rushed home to find his father with upper body injuries. The man was taken to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said. Police said there were no signs of forced entry, but a safe had been taken. Neighbors of the family-owned business a mile away from their home, Rose Donuts, said the safe probably contained cash from the business. A family friend said the father, who he called Randy, was asleep at home during the robbery because he was filling in for his nephew at work. He said he was baking donuts at 2 a.m. while his nephew was on vacation.Customers who work in the area say the family is beloved. "They have two boys and sometimes they even babysit the grand kids while they’re working... SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A deaf and legally blind man was promoted to the Marine Corps Recruitment Depot as a Prep Chef last week and is thrilled to be back to work. Kevin Tong was born deaf in Vietnam and moved with his family to San Diego when he was 13. He fell in love with cooking during an internship and started working in hotels, honing his skills in the kitchen.In his 20s another challenge hit, his vision started to go dark. "I started to see from what would be considered a tunnel and I went to the doctor because it was really alarming to me to work in food services and not have the vision I needed to cut safely," Tong said through interpreter Laila-Wendy Chouinard with the Helen Keller National Center.From 2016 until about two months ago, Tong didn't have a job. That's where the HKNC stepped in with training.They have six core areas of training, according to Susanne Hogan, Senior Orientation and Mobility Specialist, Helen Keller National Center. "We teach in orientation and mobility, which teaches travel in the community or the work environment. We teach assistive technology," which helps those with hearing or vision loss communicate says Hogan."They helped me not only as a deaf-blind person to find success but they taught me how to be independent by teaching me mobility skills, taught me employment skills," Tong said through sign language.He advocates for others in his shoes, "so for those who are deaf-blind or have vision loss, I tell them be flexible and learn to take on challenges." He said even if you can't do something, watch and absorb the information. He said if you don't give up you can achieve your dreams, like saving up to travel the world. "I want to learn more about other deaf cultures, other deaf-blind people who live abroad, I want to see what they do and how they live," Tong says.Tong is one of about half of the staff at the Mess Hall overcoming obstacles to try and lead a normal life, serving those who serve our country. He works for a company called Sodexo, and General Manager Kevin Hollingsworth said he's been very impressed with Kevin's ability and his drive to earn promotions.Tong worked for Camp Pendleton for two months before being promoted and transferring to MCRD. At MCRD he works off a recipe to feed 2,700 recruits three times a day, according to officials on base.A green cutting board helps him see what he's doing easier and he wears extra pairs of gloves to protect himself while working: "If I show any type of distraction it could cost me one of my fingers."October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month and the Helen Keller National Center hopes to raise awareness of their services and help those like Tong.The Mess Hall hasn't stopped running through the pandemic, keeping Marines and recruits full and ready for training. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A bluff that overlooks Beacon’s Beach in Encinitas is on the brink of collapsing, which could mean changes for the walking trail that leads visitors down to the beach. The City of Encinitas says the bluff is at risk. There is a low-lying failure and the bluff could fall, taking the walking trail with it.“We’ve been told by our experts that there is a chance that the slide could happen at any time,”says Brenda Wisneski, Developmental Services Director for the City of Encinitas. Visitors at Beacon’s Beach say they feel the walking trail makes the beach different from others. “It’s one of my favorite beaches in all of San Diego. A part of that is because of the access, this trail is highly unique and it's not stairs,” says Mark Tayer. The city has a proposal to add a staircase south of the entry to the trail.“That is the most safe, the most secure. It requires a minimal amount of stability at the base of it,” says Wisneski.Wisneski says the city also has plans to move the parking lot back from the failure area. This could mean fewer parking spaces for visitors. The city hopes to begin construction in the fall of 2019. The proposal will go to the planning commission next. The trail will stay there until it poses a safety issue to visitors. On Wednesday, the City of Encinitas will have an open house where members of the community can voice their concerns. SAN DIEGO (KGTV and CNS) -- A suspected arsonist was arrested for allegedly starting a series of brush fires in Otay Mesa West, Sunday afternoon. MAST (Metro Arson Strike Team) investigators booked 49 year-old Ramon Guevara for arson.According to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, the blaze broke out just after 10:30 near 4th Avenue and Private Road. The fires were ignited in the valley at Otay Valley Regional Park.Crews say at least 10 spot fires started along the road and, as of 12:30 p.m., and had burned three acres. Sunday marked the third day in a row small brush fires popped up in the area. RELATED: Apartments near SDSU evacuated due to brush fireCrews blocked off Beyer Way as they battled the flames until 4:00 pm. Units from the Chula Vista and San Diego fire departments and two firefighting helicopters joined to battle the flames.
