CAMP PENDLETON (KGTV) - Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton is balancing mitigating risk of exposure to the coronavirus with training to keep Marines ready for deployment."Changes of command are smaller, retirements are smaller," Col. Jeff Holt, Deputy Commander for Marine Corps Installations West, Camp Pendleton, said.At changes of command, Marines are masked and six feet apart, and large formations are no more."We have mitigation measures to protect our people but life's not perfect, life gets in the way. We have to overcome those obstacles and challenges because we have a greater mission and that is to our nation," Col. Holt said.The Marines take pride in the 'First to Fight' motto. The 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) is deployed in Jordan and the 15th MEU is preparing to deploy. Coronavirus is not creating a delay."There are choices that are made to protect the people but also to replicate what we would face in combat because the requirements of the Marine Corps do not stop," Co. Holt said Marines are training the way they would fight overseas.Units are quarantined for two weeks before and after deployment to ensure everyone is healthy. When units are training they are isolating, they do not go home each night. Marines are asked health screening questions and given temperature checks.It's not just training that has changed, the commissary and thrift store have a strict cleaning schedule and safety barriers just like San Diego's grocery stores.Col. Holt said they've been learning from San Diego and took notes, implementing strategies used at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar when flights from Wuhan, China arrived. CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) -- A 16-year-old boy was killed and seven other teenagers were taken to the hospital after a rollover crash on a Carlsbad street early Wednesday morning.Carlsbad police said the solo-vehicle crash happened at around 2:15 a.m. on Carlsbad Village Drive at Valley Street.According to police, an Toyota 4-Runner SUV with eight people inside rolled over for unknown reasons. A teenage male passenger died at the scene, a lieutenant at the scene told 10News. Family members identified the 16-year-old to 10News as Jack Munday. A GoFundMe to assist the family with expenses has been started here.Police said the female driver and six other passengers survived the crash, but 10News learned three of the survivors crawled out of the wreckage and fled. Those three people returned to the scene a short time later.Three other survivors got out of the vehicle and remained at the scene, while responding firefighters freed a passenger that was trapped inside.Police said the survivors were taken to area hospitals for treatment of injuries "ranging from minor to serious."Police confirmed the seven survivors, including the SUV’s driver, are under the age of 18.According to police, alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash but they are looking at the possibility the SUV was traveling at a high rate of speed before the rollover.Lilli O’Connell could hardly hold back the tears as she watched crews working to get the mangled SUV onto a tow truck.“We are a tight community; It’s sad, it’s really sad. I mean, 16 to 18 [years old], that can be anyone at my school. Curling usually soars in popularity during the Winter Olympics, but you can also play year-round, even in sunny San Diego.Each week, members of “Curl San Diego” gather at the Icetown Skating Rink in Carlsbad to teach people curling. “It’s fascinating and something you don’t usually see, so everyone wants to try it,” said Owen McLachlan, the club’s vice president.The idea behind curling is simple. Shove a 42-pound rock as close to the center of a target as possible.In reality, it’s not so easy. “It’s usually called, ‘Chess on Ice,’” McLachlan said. Similar to bocce or shuffleboard, the team closest to the center gets the points.The sweeping heats up the ice, reducing friction and allowing the stone to travel farther and straighter.“An eighth of an inch can make or break a shot,” said Karen Coombs, who grew up playing in Canada, but now lives in San Diego.The Carlsbad club started after the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy. Organizers say a lot of Canadians in San Diego wanted a place to play, and when the Winter Olympics come around..“We'll have 200 people for a learn to curl,” Coombs said. Shuffle Golf won distribution out of 5,000 submissions."The buyer recognized the concept is cool," Storey said. "It's different. It's a quality game. It's made in America. And, that's exactly what Walmart is doing today."The game uses a vibrant carpet mat, which allows for two-way putting, has various scoring sections around the green, and includes negative scores for sand and water hazards. And, you can knock your opponents' ball off the course."It's a great educational tool for math for young kids," Storey said. "And, parents now are having to teach their kids and home school and so forth."But, Storey said the game is great for all ages and all skill levels. And, it can get competitive.It's teeing up the fun, just in time for the holidays."Now, (families) have a new game to play, outside your Bocce Ball, or Monopoly, or all these different traditional games," Storey said.
