JULIAN, Calif. (KGTV)-- This was the first weekend San Diegans were able to enjoy the snow-packed mountains. But morning road closures made traveling uphill from San Diego difficult. By early afternoon, most road restrictions were lifted, and thousands of people made their way to the tourist towns. To Teak Nichols, Julian is just home. But he knows it is a special place. "It's been really magical the last few days. So I can understand why people would want to be a part of that," Nichols said. With its old-world charm and snow-packed roofs, Julian is an escape from the daily grind. "We wanted to get away from the city," San Diegan Sandra Aguiar said. She brought her husband's family from Tijuana to experience the allure of the small town. But she said it was not an easy ride. "It took about an hour and 45 minutes," Aguiar said. "Then two miles from here, it was bumper to bumper."Until 1 p.m. Saturday, California Highway Patrol officers slowed down drivers to enforce chain controls along State Route 79 at Cuyamaca Rancho State Park. Many parts of Sunrise Highway were also shut down due to icy conditions. "In some parts, it was kind of scary. We were sliding a little bit," Aguiar said. Even after they finally made it into town, the waiting continued. Aguilar's main reason for coming up the hill was to get a bite of Nichol's mother's famous dessert at Mom's Pies. "I've tried Julian pies before, but these are the best," Aguiar said. Nichols said it is a recipe that has been kept a secret since 1984. It is a seasonal favorite that sells out, every time it snows."It's gotten busier as the day has gone on," Nichols said. "Apparently, the road opened up, so we got a little bit busier after that."Snow days may slow down traffic and clog up parking, but customers said it is all worthwhile."It's homemade, and it makes it better because we're with family," Aguiar said. KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Plaza Academy teacher Justin Gillespie is bringing hip hop production to his classroom.The class is called ‘The Beat Academy of KC’ and is the 5th and 6th hour at school for students.“It's the only program in Kansas City that teaches kids how to make hip hop production,” Gillespie said.Gillespie launched the program back in August.“It's been something I've done in my personal life,” Gillespie said. “I've been a professional musician for 15 years and it's been super rewarding.”From beats to rhythms, students take their creativity to a whole new level.“I'm excited to go here everyday,” freshman Thom Van Til said. “I get joyful when I come here, like it helps me calm down,” 8th grader K’ron Lyons said.The class is producing more than just quality hip hop, it’s also producing higher grades and more engagement from students.“Justin would probably say you cannot perform because your grades is bad, so he encourages me to like make sure I do my work,” Lyons said.Students plan to perform what they’ve been working on at the Beat Academy Block Party alongside Kansas City hip hop artists like Ces Cru, JL & Info Gates, Adrian Truth and Suli4Q. The school is raising funds to build a recording studio this summer, to make more courses available to students next year.  1328

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The man whose wife was found dismembered in two ice coolers has been charged in connection with dismembering and abandoning her body. Justin Rey is accused of abandonment of a corpse and endangering the welfare of a child.  Lenexa police officers went to U-Haul on October 24 to check on Rey and his two children, who were reportedly sleeping in a storage unit. During the investigation, a woman’s remains were found in the unit. Court documents officially identified the remains as Rey’s wife. The documents said Rey’s wife, who family identified as Jessica Monteiro Rey, was found dismembered in coolers. According to court records, Rey was dragging several containers at the U-Haul facility when police spoke to him. Rey told officers his wife died after childbirth several days earlier, and her body was in the two containers. Court documents said Rey told police he spent two days with his wife’s body before dismembering her. Rey told detectives his two children were in the hotel room as he dismembered and disposed of his wife’s body. Prosecutors requested a bond of 0,000 cash. Rey is in custody in Johnson County. The Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office said the case remains under investigation.  1281

Kimberly-Clark has recalled some Cottonelle flushable wipes due to potential bacteria contamination that could lead to an infection.According to the recall notice, Kimberly-Clark voluntarily recalled select packages of Cottonelle Flushable Wipes and Cottonelle GentlePlus Flushable Wipes that were manufactured between Feb. 7 and Sept. 14 and sold in the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean.To see if your wipes have been affected, the company provided a lot number checker on its website."Some of the affected products could contain the bacterium, Pluralibacter gergoviae, which is a cause of infection in humans, can be an opportunistic pathogen, and is part of the normal intestinal flora," Kimberly-Clark stated in the notice.
