BEIJING, July 5 (Xinhua) -- Premier Wen Jiabao said here Monday that China regards India as an important strategic partner of cooperation."We will work with India to maintain high level visits and take care of each other's core interests and major concerns," Wen said when meeting visiting Indian prime ministerial special envoy Shiv Shankar Menon.Wen also pledged to enhance dialogue and cooperation with India to benefit the two peoples, and make joint efforts to promote world peace and common prosperity.Hailing the 60-year diplomatic ties between China and India, Wen said the bilateral relationship has matured well, with deepening mutual political trust and remarkable achievements in cooperation in various sectors.Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao (1st R) meets with visiting Indian prime ministerial special envoy Shiv Shankar Menon (1st L), who served as Indian National Security Advisor, in Beijing, capital of China, on July 5, 2010.The two countries have also reached important agreements and made sound coordination in coping with the international financial crisis, climate change and other major issues, Wen noted.Wen said China and India, as neighbors and large developing nations with largest populations, enjoy not only profound historical and cultural origins but also broad common interests."A healthy, stable and dynamic China-India relationship is of far-reaching significance to the two nations, Asia and the whole world at large," he said.Wen also extended greetings to Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the President of the Indian Congress Party Sonia Gandhi.Menon, who serves as Indian National Security Advisor, delivered Prime Minister Singh's letter to Premier Wen.Menon quoted Singh's saying that China is a great and friendly neighbor of India, and the relationship with China is one of the most important foreign relations for India. Both India and China have developed rapidly in recent years, and the two nations have established a strategic partnership of cooperation, with increasing mutual trust. Menon said this has laid a sound foundation for strengthening bilateral cooperation. With the world going through an important development phase, both India and China should take bigger role in directing its course, Menon said.India would work with China to jointly make development planning and create new situations for the growth of bilateral ties, he noted.Menon arrived in Beijing Saturday, and is scheduled to conclude his trip on July 6.

NANJING, July 3 (Xinhua) -- The population of China, the world's most populous country, is projected to reach 1.39 billion by the end of 2015, with those age 60 or over topping 200 million people, said Li Bin, head of the country's top population policy agency.Li, director of the National Population and Family Planning Commission, released these estimates Saturday during a speech at the annual conference of the China Population Association in Nanjing, capital city of east China's Jiangsu Province. The urban population is projected to be over 700 million over the next five years, for the first time exceeding the rural population, according to Li.She said the increase in the next five years would be based upon the nation's population momentum, which, according to her, would begin to decline after 2015.Population momentum is the tendency of a highly fertile population that has been rapidly increasing in size to continue to do so for decades after the onset of even a substantial decline in fertility.Chinese government statistics show China's population stood at 1.32 billion at the end of 2008, which was about 2.5 times the number in 1949 when the People's Republic of China was founded. To put a hold on the fast growth, the Chinese government adopted a one-child policy in the late 1970s. The policy had helped China's total population increase less than 40 percent between 1978 and 2008, whereas it nearly doubled between 1949 and 1978.However, during the next five years the development of China's population is expected to go through major transitional changes, Li said.China's first boom in its aging population is expected in the next five years, with roughly an average of eight million people turning 60 each year, 3.2 million more than occurred between 2006 and 2010, she said.In the coming five years, the ratio of the population aged 15 to 59 would peak and then slowly fall, whereas the population dependency ratio, a measure of the proportion of the population too young or too old to work, would rise for the first time after over 40 years of decreasing. In general, China would still retain the advantage of a plentiful labor supply and a relatively low population dependency ratio, she said.

BEIJING, June 21 (Xinhua) -- China's announcement that it would allow more flexibility in its yuan exchange rate meant an end to the crisis-mode policy the government took to cushion the blow from the global financial crisis, experts interviewed by Xinhua said Monday. The People's Bank of China, also known as the central bank, said Saturday that it decided to proceed even further with the reform of the Renminbi exchange rate to add flexibility to the RMB exchange rate. The decision was made in view of the recent economic situation and financial market developments at home and abroad, as well as due to the balance of payments situation in China, the central bank said. However, it ruled out a one-off revaluation of the yuan as there was no basis for large changes in its value.Experts noted it was the correct time for the exchange rate policy to return to its normal state, given the consolidated economic recovery, large decline in trade surplus and more balanced international payments.Zhao Xijun, deputy dean of the School of Finance with the Renmin University of China, said the normalization of China's exchange rate policy would intensify China's economic connection to the global economy and help promote the country's economic restructuring and adjustments of its development mode.China moved to a managed floating exchange rate regime in July 2005 which was based on market supply and demand and referencing a basket of currencies. The reform of the RMB exchange rate has made continuous progress since then, producing the anticipated results and playing a positive role. The financial crisis which broke out in the United States in 2008 shook the global financial markets and dented investment confidence. To counter fallout from the economic turmoil, nations rolled out their crisis-mode measures.Zhou Xiaochuan, governor of the central bank, said in March that the exchange rate policy China took amid the crisis was part of the government's stimulus packages, and would exit "sooner or later" along with other crisis-measures.China's economy expanded at 11.9 percent year on year in the first quarter of this year and exports surged 48.5 percent in May, government data showed.Zhao said China narrowed fluctuation of the RMB exchange rate to stabilize market sentiment and stimulate economic growth amid crisis, which was in the interests of China and contributed to the country's economic recovery.During the worst of the global crisis, exchange rates of a number of sovereign currencies to the U.S. dollar depreciated by large margins while the yuan kept stable. Against these depreciating currencies, the value of the yuan has been rising."Undoubtedly, it improved the trade environment for these countries and helped them through hard times," Zhao said, noting the policy contributed significantly to the Asian and global recovery."Narrowing the fluctuation of the yuan's value was the best exchange rate policy China could take during the crisis period, which gave export businesses a stable expectation of the yuan's value and reduced costs caused by a volatile currency," said Xiang Songzuo, Deputy Director of the Center for International Monetary Research at Renmin University of China. The central bank's move also intended to increase competitiveness of export businesses and accelerate economic restructuring.Zhao said when the RMB exchange rate regime becomes more market-oriented, China's export businesses should take more responsibilities and become more self-reliant.The central bank said Sunday that the management and adjustment of the yuan exchange rate would occur gradually, which was necessary to give export businesses time to adjust their business structures and create more jobs in the service sector.Cao Honghui, senior researcher with the Institute of Finance and Banking under the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said the further proceeding meant China would rely more on domestic demands for economic growth, which would push forward adjustments of the global economic structure. The central parity of the Renminbi against the U.S. dollar remained at 6.8275 Monday, unchanged from the previous trading day, according to the China foreign Exchange Trading System.

BEIJING, June 11 (Xinhua) -- China's retail sales, the main gauge of consumer spending in the world's fastest-growing economy, rose 18.7 percent year on year to 1.25 trillion yuan (183 billion U.S. dollars) in May, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) announced Friday. The growth rate was 3.5 percentage points higher than the same period last year and 0.2 percentage points higher than April's, said NBS spokesman Sheng Laiyun.Urban consumption hit 1.08 trillion yuan in May, up 19.1 percent year on year, while rural residents spent 163.7 billion yuan, up 15.8 percent.  A woman walks by a sale advertising poster in Beijing, capital of China, May 11, 2010.In the first five months, total retail sales climbed 18.2 percent to 6.03 trillion yuan. The growth rate was 3.2 percentage points higher than the same period last year. The government rolled out a series of incentives to bolster consumption to counter the fallout from the global economic downturn, including subsidies for home appliances in rural areas and tax breaks for auto purchases, in early 2009, among others.China's auto sales in May rose 28.35 percent from a year earlier to 1.44 million units, bringing combined sales in the first five months to 7.6 million units, up 53.25 percent from a year earlier.Monthly sales of home appliances in China's countryside surged 220 percent year on year in May to 12.6 billion yuan. The figure for January-May period was 54.35 billion yuan, up 400 percent from year on year.

QINGDAO, June 30 (Xinhua) -- The spread of green algae has quickened as the temperature rises in Qingdao City of east China's Shandong Province. The area covered by green algae surged by 60 sq. km on Tuesday to 460 sq. km, according to the latest monitoring figure by the North China Sea Branch of the State Oceanic Administration released Wednesday. The surge is three times as fast as the average increase over the past four days, which was from 380 to 400 sq. km."It's getting hotter and hotter in Qingdao these days, and the green algae grows faster and faster," said Wang Zhigang, a local resident who swims in the sea every day.Sixteen to 20 degrees Celsius were the most favorable sea temperature range for growth of the algae, said Pang Shaojun, a researcher from the Institute of Oceanology under the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The air temperature in Qingdao has risen by one degree Celsius per day on average over the past five days, reaching 27 degree Celsius Wednesday, according to the city's meteorological bureau."The sea temperature has risen to 20 degrees Celsius today, and the algae will keep growing if the temperature keeps rising," Pang said. The weather report said there would be a heavy rain in Qingdao, which would lower the air temperature to 25 degrees Celsius in the next three days, which meant the sea temperature would remain in the best range for the continued spreading of the green algae.Over 6,000 people, including cleaning workers and sea police, were deployed to clean the green algae as its continuing spread might affect the local fishery and tourism industries, said Ding Shugen from the Qingdao Committee of Municipal and Rural Construction.
