With more Indian reservations than any other county in the United States, San Diego powwows help keep those traditions alive."We all try to come together and share the culture, do the best we can to teach our children. I was born and raised on the reservation, but my kids were not, so it's hard to instill the same teachings that I was brought up with," said Emerald Arnold, born and raised on the Navajo reservation.Children and adults dressed in colorful regalia for the powwow, which was held Saturday at the Harold J. Ballard Parent Center in Old Town. "When there's music provided, our ancestors hear them, and they smile upon us.Cadotte says powwows bring him closer to his ancestors and his heritage. "We can be recognized. We can have our rights restored, our heritage recognized."Native American veterans were honored at the powwow, including 102-year-old Joe Renteria, a World War II Navy veteran."It brings different people here, and it's just like a family reunion, that's what it amounts to."While each tribe has its own teachings, culture, and traditions, they come together as one at the powwow. "That's kind of what the goal is, is to try to teach our children, so our traditions and our culture doesn't die."On two Wednesdays a month, the Ballard Center holds dance classes open to all students and free of charge.They host cultural activities every Tuesday night. 1741

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Some San Diego fitness studios and hotels are getting creative by working together.F45 Training San Diego East Village and the Hard Rock Hotel San Diego are partnering to offer outdoor fitness classes this weekend.George Chmiel, the F45 studio owner, said that when they heard about the new public health orders to shut down more indoor spaces, they immediately looked for outdoor space.Meanwhile, the nearby Hard Rock Hotel San Diego has an 8,700 square foot rooftop terrace that's sitting empty. It's typically used for events and parties, but none are happening due to the pandemic. The hotel has allowed F45 to use the space without charge."Two industries that have been hurt by this current situation we're going through, are the hospitality and fitness industries," said Rana Kay, the director of communications at the Hard Rock Hotel San Diego. "We feel the pain at the gyms when they were recently shut down once again.""I think it's a great collaboration of businesses that have just gotten kicked in the face to find a unique way to weather the storm and potentially grow through this," Chmiel said.Chmiel says the plan is to hold one class on Saturdays and Sundays, and two classes on the weekdays.Kay says it could also benefit their guests. They hope people staying at the hotel will eventually take part in the classes as an option because fitness areas in the hotel are currently closed.Hapa Yoga & Fitness in Mission Valley says they have also turned to hotels since their indoor studio space closed. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Several residents have reported receiving calls from San Diego Superior Court demanding money for pending court cases or face arrest.The scam has been reported by several members of the county Hispanic community, according to court officials. The caller says the potential victim has a pending case and that they must deposit money into a bank account or an arrest warrant will be issued.Scammers are using software to mask their number, so the ongoing calls will display the official court phone number in Caller ID."The Court would like to remind the public that it will not demand money over to phone to clear up cases or dismiss any warrants. When in doubt, immediately hang up and call the Court on your own," a release from San Diego Superior Court said.Law enforcement officials also recommend hanging up and calling authorities if scammers become aggressive over the phone. 908

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — St. Augustine High School, an all-boys Catholic school in North Park, has filed a lawsuit against California Gov. Gavin Newsom and other state officials to allow the school to reopen for in-person instruction.The school says that after holding its summer school and athletic programs in-person for more than 400 students without any reports of COVID-19 cases, they are seeking to stop the state's enforcement against in-person classes during the pandemic this fall."At Saints, we don’t believe remote learning is sufficient to provide a quality education our students are entitled to and our families have come to expect," said Principal James Horne. "We are confident we can open our school safely, consistent with CDC and San Diego County health guidance. We ran a safe and successful summer school program and believe it is an indicator that we can safely return to school in the fall."The school says it adhered to the county's public health guidelines and safety measures during its summer programs, including required to face masks, social distancing requirements, air conditioning systems using UV lights to sanitize the air, and buildings and classrooms being regularly sanitized with an electrostatic disinfecting mist system.St. Augustine also said a distance learning option would still be offered for families who don't want to send their children back to school in-person."After appeals from many families to return to the classroom, Saints is pursuing the best way to offer opportunities that are the right fit for all its students and families," the school said. 1604

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Stopping aggressive behavior before it starts is one of the many goals for schools within the San Ysidro School District.The San Ysidro School District partnered up with the District Attorney’s office to teach staff members restorative practices in school. These practices help students deal with their emotions and understand their behaviors.Kids take a few minutes a day to express how they feel and address different topics like who they trust and why. This practice is a way to swap punishment and instead provide support in hopes of reducing crime, bullying, and violence.RELATED: Bullying a major concern as kids go back to school“This is giving these students an opportunity to be more successful because when emotions get involved and you don’t know why you have them, and you don’t know how to deal with them that’s when a lot of students get in trouble,” said Manuela Colom-Ramirez.The District Attorney’s office and the and the San Ysidro School District hope this program provides an action plan guideline for students, staff, and parents.“It’s all under the philosophy that when you are doing with, rather than to, you are going to get more inspired kids, you are going to get more inspired youth, and we are able to build a more sustainable community,” said Khemal Johnson. 1319
