Three students who gave their lives when a gunman opened fire inside a Florida high school will be awarded Medal's of Heroism by the U.S. Army, a spokesperson told Scripps station WFTS in Tampa.According to the U.S. Army, "The Medal of Heroism is a U.S. military decoration awarded by the Department of the Army to a JROTC Cadet who performs an act of heroism. There's a new program aimed at helping Black and Latinx students succeed.The Equity in Education Initiative was built through a partnership between Walmart and North Carolina A&T State University.The program acknowledges many of these students start at a disadvantage, because they go through under-funded school districts.“These students are coming in sometimes with academic gaps that are due to no fault of their own. It's not a difference in ability, it's just a difference in their zip code,” said Kevin James, Dean of the Deese College of Business and Economics at North Carolina A&T.The program is broken up into four focus areas, addressing specific needs of different students. They include financial resources and mentorship while in school, and then network building to create career opportunities their white counterparts may already have.“So many people actually obtain their jobs through networks, because they know someone who knows someone, and many of these students, most of them come in without those built in networks and their families don't have those networks,” said James.The hope is that the positive effects of the program will extend outside of school, allowing successful students to invest and give back.“It's not just about the impact on the student. It's about multi-generational impact on families and about extending those impacts into communities that often times have been under resourced,” said James.Some parts of the program, like the Black Male Initiative, will make resources automatically available to students.There will be an application process for the Leadership Cohort and scholarships.The program starts early next year. 1683

Tour promoter Live Nation has announced its first-ever drive-in concerts series in the U.S. for July, months after the live music industry has been on lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic. The entertainment company on Monday announced “Live from the Drive-In” — a set of nine shows to take place July 10-12 in three different cities. Brad Paisley will headline shows in all three cities, while fellow country artists Darius Rucker and Jon Pardi will also perform in Nashville at Nissan Stadium. Nelly will perform in Maryland Heights, near St. Louis.The 3-day concert series will take place at the Ruoff Music Center in Indiana and Hollywood Casino Amphitheater in Missouri - both are outdoor concert venues - and in the parking lot of Nissan Stadium, where the Tennessee Titans play. Ticketing is per vehicle with up to four people inside, and includes access to a parking space and adjoining "tailgate" area. TOKYO (AP) — The five Olympic rings are back in Tokyo Bay. The rings were removed for maintenance four months ago shortly after the Tokyo Olympics were postponed until next year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The rings are positioned on a barge and stand about 15 meters tall and 33 meters in length — about 50 feet tall and 100 feet in length. The Olympic rings will be lighted at night and are situated in the shadow of Tokyo's famous Rainbow Bridge. The Olympics are to open on July 23, 2021, followed by the Paralympics on Aug. 24. Organizers are confident that 15,400 Olympic and Paralympic athletes can safely enter Japan during the pandemic. 659
