Three Metro-North Railroad workers have been suspended for turning a storage room under Manhattan's Grand Central Terminal into an unauthorized “man cave” with a television, a refrigerator, a microwave, a futon couch and more.A Metropolitan Transportation Authority Inspector General investigation found that Metro-North managers were unaware of the hideaway in a storage room located behind a locked door, beneath Track 114.Railroad officials said Thursday that a wireman, a carpenter foreman and an electrical foreman have been suspended without pay pending disciplinary hearings.Inside the room, investigators found personal property and evidence that implicated the three employees. This included a receipt with the wireman's name on it, a streaming device connected to a hotspot associated with the carpenter foreman's phone, personal calendars, and a pull-up bar with a shipping sticker reading the name of the electrical foreman.The Office of the MTA Inspector General launched the investigation after learning of complaints about the room from anonymous tips, the MTA said.Metro-North President Catherine Rinaldi released the following statement Thursday: The behavior described in the IG’s report is outrageously inappropriate and is not consistent with Metro-North’s values and the commitment that we have to providing safe, reliable and cost-efficient service to our customers. All three employees were immediately suspended without pay and are being disciplined in accordance with their collective bargaining agreements. Officials said the hidden space presented a fire hazard because rescue workers would have had difficulty accessing an unmapped room. CYPRESS, Calif. -- It’s Friday the 13th and finals week at Cypress College in Southern California. A chilling combination for some, but for other students it’s just another day at school. They’re studying for a career that’s not for everybody – but a career that will eventually impact just about everyone. These students are prepping for their final exams in mortuary science, a degree where they can make a living while dealing with death.“This is from what I’ve learned is a gasket casket,” said Karla Ruiz, a Cypress College mortuary science student. Ruiz has a goal of advancing her career from a local morgue to national security. “I’m really into watching a bunch of CIA stuff or like crime stuff,” she said. “So, I want to find something that can open the door for that.” Cypress College is one of about 60 colleges across the country that offer this kind of end-of-life education. It may seem like a grim career choice, but the mortuary science industry is now attracting different kind of demographics. “As far as male female it’s certainly changed,” said Damon de la Cruz, Cypress College mortuary science assistant professor. “It wouldn’t be hard for us to see in a graduating class of 20 something like three males and 17 females. It’s really shifted in that direction.” It’s a direction where there’s now a growing demand for qualified workers. “There’s not enough students to meet the demand of the community,” de la Cruz said. “As result of that many of our students are placed or they get hired before they even graduate.” The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports the median annual wage for morticians, undertakers and funeral directors is more than ,000 a year. Funeral service managers can make closer to ,000. “I’ve been in this industry for a long time and I’ve had many opportunities presented to me to where I’ve grown, been able to afford a house, and be able to live comfortably in southern California,” said Harbor Lawn Mortuary funeral director Michael Roudebush. Roudebush has hired several Cypress College students through the years. He says a career in mortuary science can be financially rewarding but also emotionally draining “Empathetic and compassionate people are what we’re always looking for,” Roudebush said. “We are people too and we’ve been through what the families have been through. We all experience loss.” Back on the college campus, students like Ruiz are gaining an understanding of death that they can use for a lifetime. She says that after studying death, she now appreciates life more. “Ever since doing this I’m closer to my family,” she said. “I actually want to go home and hang out with them.”A celebration of life that comes from knowing exactly what others have lost. 2746

  

In an instant, the windshield to Rob Weber's small airplane shattered while a thousand feet in the air. “I was pretty much on the edge of blacking out,” he describes. A camera in the cockpit captured it all. When you slow down the video, you can see a bird fly right through the windshield, forcing Weber to declare an emergency as he approached the airport in Fort Myers, Florida. “After I’d taken the hit to the head, I was really dazed,” Weber recalls. “I was having a hard time communicating with them, because I was knocked silly. I really couldn't focus on where I was or what was going on.” The latest data shows there are a record number of bird strikes involving planes, with more than 40 a day on average. A big reason for the spike: more flights and a jump in the bird population. “It's a classic probability situation. More planes and more large birds in the air at the same time,” explains Michael Begier with the National Bird Strike Committee. Begier works with the organization to track incidents and find ways to reduce them. Statistically speaking, the highest chances of being involved in bird strike are from July through October, during the day and while approaching the airport. The accident involving US Airways Flight 1549, known as the Miracle on the Hudson, is perhaps the most memorable and extreme example of how damaging bird strikes can be. However, the majority of bird strikes do not cause any major damage to planes. “The percentage of damaging strikes has actually been going down in the airport environment and that's where it's most vulnerable,” Begier says.For years, workers have used loud noises and fireworks at airports to scare off birds, but they have started testing new ideas, including using drones that look like large predatory birds and redesigning the lights on airplanes to deter birds. 1851

  

Atlanta 1979 was the start of a series of murders that terrorized the city for two years. Nearly 30 African Americans, mostly children and some as young as 9, were found murdered around the city. Catherine Leach-Bell's son, 13-year-old Curtis, was one of the victims in a string of murders between 1979 and 1981. “It hurt because we loved our children, and it really hurt,” she says. Atlanta's mayor, Keisha Bottoms, announced investigators are going to examine old evidence, using new technology to see if they can learn more about the murder cases. Many of them remain unsolved. “I want some closure. I want justice. I want to know who killed Curtis,” says his mother. “His case is still sitting on the shelf getting dusty and rusty.” A jury found Wayne Williams guilty for the murder of two adults. After his conviction, police blamed Williams for being responsible for most of the child murders, but he was never officially charged for those crimes. Williams has maintained his innocence, and some question whether he is responsible for all of the murders. Mayor Bottoms' announcement comes just days before Investigation Discovery's three-hour documentary series about the case, which airs tomorrow. “We'd like to think that the buzz around the film may have had something to do with her decision, but most important is the fact these victims who have so long looking to be heard seem to finally have been heard,” says Pamela Deutsch, an executive producer for the show.Investigators admit they don't know what they'll find and if it will change anything, but they say they owe it to the families to try to use new technology to find any possible new leads. 1675
