Artificial turf has been a staple in many pro sports stadiums for about 50 years. And while there's no doubt that AstroTurf and its modern equivalent, FieldTurf, have changed the way pro football and baseball have been played, the surfaces have generally been considered safe for athletes to play on.But on Monday, the NFL Player's Association formally called on team owners to "proactively change all field surfaces to natural grass," citing higher rates of injuries to players who are playing on artificial fields.In an open letter, NFLPA President J.C. Tretter — a center for Cleveland Browns in the midst of his eighth NFL season — claimed that most of his teammates preferred to play on grass, noting that his joints felt "noticeably stiffer" after playing on artificial turf."The unforgiving nature of artificial turf compounds the grind on the body we already bear from playing a contact sport," Tretter wrote.In his letter, Tretter wrote that real grass offers more "give," reducing the stress on feet, ankles and knees. He also noted that NFL injury data shows players have a 28% higher rate of non-contact lower extremity injuries when playing on artificial turf.Tretter also noted that despite harsh conditions, cold-weather cities like Cleveland, Green Bay and Pittsburgh still use traditional grass fields. In addition, indoor stadiums in Las Vegas and Phoenix also use grass surfaces."Agronomically, natural grass field surfaces are possible everywhere," Tretter said.As of 2020, 17 of 31 NFL stadiums use traditional grass.Tretter's letter comes weeks after the NFL was forced to inspect the artificial turf at MetLife Stadium — home of the Jets and Giants — after several high-profile players were injured in the surface in the opening weeks of the season. Among those hurt during weeks 2 and 3 of the season were 49ers players George Kittle Nick Bosa, Jimmy Garoppolo and Raheem Mostert.In 2015, Houston's NRG Stadium switched from natural grass to an artificial surface after more than a decade amid player criticism over injury concerns. Due to its retractable roof, groundskeepers grew grass in trays outdoors and then brought the trays indoors and assembled them together with forklifts to form the playing surface. ANDERSON, Ind. -- A mother and stepfather in Indiana are accused of locking their children in a basement without food, water or a place to go to the bathroom.Connie and her husband Javier Campos were arrested over the weekend and charged with four counts of neglect of a dependent. The investigation began back in November 2017 when a 13-year-old boy ran away from home and was found at a local hotel. At the time, the investigator contacted the Department of Child Services because he believed the children may be in need of services. According to court documents, the couple had four children living in their home ages 13, 11, 10 and 8.The children told investigators that their mother and step-father would lock three of them in the basement of their home any time the adults would leave the house or go to bed.The children described using a bucket and bottle if they needed to go to the bathroom or holding it until morning.  “You go before, hold it or it sucks to be you,” the 13-year-old child told investigators.Each of the children had a bed in their upstairs bedrooms, according to court documents, but they were only there “in case CPS came then they would think we sleep there.” 1217

ARVADA, Colo. — An 11-year-old girl penned a letter to Santa filled with heartache, asking him to stop her “sadness” after losing her father and grandmother in a house fire over the summer.Brooklynn Alexander, 11, wrote her Christmas wish and dropped off her letter in Santa’s mailbox in her hometown of Arvada.Amber Klein built the mailbox to ensure Santa received every letter written by kids in Arvada before Christmas.“Every night, I send the letters off to Santa,” Klein said.While helping Santa read through the letters, Klein came across Brooklynn’s wish, a heartfelt letter raw with pain.“Santa, I’ve been suffering from depression and my anger issues have been bad lately. So, what I am trying to say is — I shouldn’t get presents and can you please stop my sadness,” Klein read in the letter.In July, a fire tore through Brooklynn's home, killing her father and grandmother. A neighbor rescued her from inside. She was put on a ventilator and spent more than a week at the hospital. The pain and anguish Brooklynn feels brought memories of Klein’s dad rushing back.“My dad passed away in a house fire and I just immediately wanted to protect her,” Klein said.Klein took to Facebook to track down Brooklynn. It didn’t take long for the two families to bond.“I told her about my dad and how he died,” Klein said. “I showed her the necklace that I wear that has my dad’s ashes in it and now Brooklynn wants the same thing.”Two lives, decades apart, found each other as Brooklynn learns to navigate her pain.“I feel like whether it be my dad or Brooklynn’s dad, that they brought us together,” Kelin said.Through tears, Brooklynn says Kelin’s story gives her hope that life will get better.Brooklynn has since written a second letter to Santa.
