BEIJING, July 15 (Xinhua) -- China issued an orange alert on Thursday for wave surges, the second highest level warning, forecasting that Typhoon Conson may reach land Friday on the southeast coast of China' s Hainan province.The National Marine Environment Forecast Center warned of a 6-metre wave surge in the middle and the north of the South China Sea from Thursday night through Friday.Meanwhile, warnings were also issued for a possible 5-metre wave surge off the east shore of Hainan province and a 3-metre wave surge off the west shore of Guangdong province and the southern coast of Hainan.The Center also issued a yellow-level alert for a storm surge which might affect Guangdong and Hainan province.The center suggested local governments gear up for a disaster response.Conson is currently wreaking havoc in the Philippines, killing at least 26 people and injuring 14 others as of Thursday.

PARIS, July 7 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo and French Prime Minister Francois Fillon agreed on Wednesday that China and France should further consolidate bilateral ties and expand economic cooperation.During a meeting held at Fillon's office, Fillon said Wu's visit will strengthen the traditional friendship between Paris and Beijing and promote the Sino-French comprehensive strategic partnership to a new stage.Wu, who is conducting an eight-day official goodwill visit to France, said China and France share common interests in many areas. BERN, SWITZERLAND, July 17 (Xinhua) -- Parliamentary leaders of China and Switzerland on Saturday exchanged views on bilateral ties, parliamentary exchanges and mutual concerns and agreed on closer exchanges between legislative bodies of the two nations for better Sino-Swiss ties.Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), expressed satisfaction over the significant progress in Sino-Swiss relationship during the recent years at a meeting with Pascale Bruderer, president of the National Council of Swiss Federal Assembly, and Erika Forster- Vannini, president of the Council of States of Swiss Federal Assembly.The development of Sino-Swiss relationship has brought substantial interests to both people and China looks forward to working together with Switzerland to further develop the comprehensive friendship and mutual-beneficial cooperation, Wu said. They agreed to conduct closer parliamentary exchanges with China.A further development of Swiss-Chinese ties is interest of Swiss government, legislative bodies and people. The legislative bodies of Swiss will positively push forward the substantial cooperation with China in all areas, they said.

  

GUANGZHOU, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- A man who had allegedly shot dead four people including two traffic policemen last month in south China's Guangdong province went on trial on Monday.The trial opened at an intermediate people's court in Jieyang City, where the suspect is charged with killing the two traffic police officers on July 5.Hu Yihua, the suspect, 29, was involved in two murder cases, police said.He robbed and shot dead a couple at a cinema parking lot in Yiwu City, Zhejiang province, at midnight July 3, and then fled to Guangdong in the victims' Lexus sedan. He disguised the car license plate and then discarded it.While sleeping in the sedan at a highway service zone on July 5, Hu was cornered by two traffic policemen on patrol duty in Jieyang as the car was without a license plate. He shot them dead and fled to Fujian, where he was nabbed on July 8 after more than one thousand police personnel were mobilized in the search for him.The sedan that Hu had stolen, a loaded pistol and identity cards of the slain police officers were found in Hu's possession.The court did not say when it would rule on the case.
