ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) -- Video from a witness shows a driver slamming into a crowd outside an Encinitas bar early Sunday morning. In the video, a U-Haul van can be seen accelerating onto a sidewalk. Video shows pedestrians leaping out of the way before the vehicle crashes into the crowd. In a Monday news release, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department said one person is in an intensive care unit while another is undergoing surgery with serious injuries following the crash. The department says a 24-year-old victim is in an intensive care unit while a 25-year-old is in surgery with serious injuries. RELATED: Man arrested after driving into crowd outside Encinitas barA 23-year-old victim was treated for minor injuries at the hospital. All three of the victims were struck when the suspect, Christian Davis, 28, reportedly drove the van onto a sidewalk outside The Saloon Bar around 1:30 a.m. Sunday. Two others received minor injuries when they detained Davis outside the bar. Deputies say Davis was asked to leave the bar because he was too intoxicated. After complying with the request, deputies say Davis got into the van, intentionally driving it onto the sidewalk. Davis was later arrested and is being charged with three counts of attempted murder and one count of attempted escape with force. Davis is scheduled to be arraigned in Vista on March 3. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the department at 760-966-3500 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 1500

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - Hundreds of teachers showed up Thursday night at the Escondido Union School board meeting, demanding better pay and benefits. The teachers are in the middle of a prolonged contract negotiation with the district.According to the superintendent, Luis Rankins-Ibarra, the district has offered a 3.37% retroactive raise for last year, when the teachers were working without a contract. Teachers have agreed to that, but are not satisfied with the 2.41% raise offered for the coming school year.“The surrounding districts have much better salary and benefits packages than ours,” said Romero Maratea, a middle school teacher and the president of the teacher’s union. The union is seeking a 2.7% cost of living adjustment (COLA) for next year. They are also asking for clarification on the district’s proposed 0.5% increase to their benefits, saying they do not know the underlying number it applies to.One of the teacher negotiators addressed the board on this topic.“Count the variables. So half a percent of an unknown quantity added to another undefined amount is what you are offering.”Another frustrated teacher commented, “are you trying to hide something? it sure seems like it.”A spokesperson for the district declined access to interview district officials. In a prepared statement from Superintendent Rankins-Ibarra, he wrote, “we are confident that we are close to a fair agreement.”He continued, “the district’s latest contract proposal is one that we can afford while still maintaining the minimum reserve requirement and remain fiscally sound three years out. Our budget presentation tonight confirms that while we can afford this offer, going beyond that would jeopardize the district’s fiscal solvency.” 1746

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Students at Classic Academy High School will return to school Tuesday without one of their own, who was tragically killed in a car accident over the weekend. Jonah Staebell died early Saturday morning when the truck he was riding in crashed. CHP officials say the accident happened at about 2:35 a.m. on Saturday on Summit Drive and Old Pasqual Road. Officers say seven teens were riding in a pick-up truck when the 18-year-old driver lost control and overturned. Five teens, including Staebell, were riding in the bed of the truck and all of them were ejected. Staebell died at the hospital. Staebell's principal, Dana Moen spoke to 10News Monday night. Moen remembered Jonah as a beloved student who did well in the classroom and in athletics. Moen says Staebell played football, lacrosse, and was a dancer. School officials tell 10News students officially go back to school on Tuesday and grief counselors will be on-site for as long as they're needed. According to Moen, the other teens involved in the accident were all treated at the hospital but have since been released. CHP says speed was a factor in the crash, but drugs or alcohol were not involved. According to the family's GoFundMe page, Jonah was the youngest of four siblings. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- An Escondido-based avocado grower is voluntarily recalling avocados sold in bulk due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. Henry Avocado Corporation issued the recall Saturday due to positive test results on environmental samples taken during routine inspection of its packaging facility. So far, there are no reports of illness. The recalled products were packaged at Henry Avocado’s packaging facility and distributed to Arizona, California, Florida, New Hampshire, North Carolina and Wisconsin. Customers can identify the recalled fruit by the “Bravocado” stickers. Henry Avocado organic products do not carry the “Bravocado” label on the sticker. Instead those products are labeled “organic” and include “California” on the sticker. All shipments from the facility are subject to the recall. According to the company, avocados imported from Mexico and distributed by Henry Avocado are not part of the recall. The company said in a news release that it’s contacting all affected customers to make sure the products are removed from shelves. Anyone who purchased the recalled product are urged to discard or return the items for a full refund. Listeria monocytogenes can cause high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. 1303
