Marco was heading for a possible hit on the Louisiana coast. Tropical Storm Laura, another potential hurricane, battered the Dominican Republic and Haiti and headed to the same part of the U.S. coast. (KGTV) -- Some North County students of color are sharing their experiences of racism anonymously in an Instagram page called "Black in PUSD."The social media account is described as "a safe space for current and graduated students in Poway Unified School District to anonymously share their experiences with racism.""We were originally inspired to start this during the Black Lives Matter movement, we thought it was a good idea to showcase the black experience in our community," said one of the page creators. The creators want to remain anonymous so they aren't targeted, but they shared with ABC 10News their encounters with racism."A girl once told me her father interrogated her after seeing us walking together, and he asked her who I was, why she was speaking to me, and if she was safe," one person on the page said.The page has more than 3,600 followers and dozens of posts. But the creators want to do more than bring awareness."In bringing awareness to these issues, we can create a more inclusive environment through better education," the creators said. "And just overall changing up the curriculum, so students understand the history of what people of color had had to face."In addition, they said they wanted to see more diversity in the staff and faculty. POWAY, Calif. (KGTV) - Poway residents gathered Monday night to rally against an anti-Semitic hate crime during Hanukkah. Someone painted a swastika on the side of a Jewish family’s home and poured some type of chemical on their car Sunday night. Shawn Seibert lives in the house with his mother. He says he heard noises around 11:20 p.m. and went outside, only to see two people away. That’s when he noticed the swastika on the side of their house and the damage to his car. Sunday night was the start of Hanukkah.“When you see it, it just shakes you down to your core,” Seibert said. “How can someone do something like that to someone they don’t know?” The community came together Monday to show their support for the Seiberts. Several dozen people gathered at the corner of Poway and Community Roads with signs preaching against hate, as drivers honked their horns in support of the rally. The Seiberts were able to remove the swastika Monday morning. 963

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. — A couple believes they got bed bugs from shopping at Port Charlotte Town Center.Matthew Nystrom said he noticed bed bugs in his bedroom Sunday. Just one day after his wife bought new jeans for him at one of the mall's department stores.He said he didn’t know where the bugs came from at first, but he said they noticed the bugs the same day he decided to wear his new jeans. Then he found a bed bug gnawing at his leg.“Pulling it out of my leg was like…I better not tell my wife or she’s gonna freak out,” Nystrom said. Then he decided to tell his wife Hillary Nystrom.She said she read comments from other people on social media complaining about bed bugs at the mall. That's when she decided to check the other pair of brand new pants that they hadn’t taken out of the bag yet.“I pulled the one pair that were in there out and I just unfolded it. And there was one sitting right there,” she said, referring to a bed bug.She said she saw it in the shopping bag after they had the house exterminated by Ace Pest Management. Pest specialist Randy Wells shared a few tips on how to get rid of them as soon as possible.“Pretty much anything that you can throw in a dryer that you think has bed bugs or the like, just put it in at high heat on a cycle and that’ll kill the bedbugs. And again call a pest professional for a thorough inspection,” he said.Wells added people can also rid their homes of the bugs by avoiding taking affected items or even moving from room to room.Several other customers have complained on Facebook about finding bed bugs in clothing after shopping at Port Charlotte Town Center, too. One said a friend was bitten on her foot after wearing new shoes from a shoe store. Nystrom said she wants the mall to do something about it.'They need to close the doors and get that figured out before any more people get it," said Nystrom.The couple said they will not shop at Port Charlotte Town Center anymore.The mall’s General Manager Barbara Roche said she’s aware of the complaints, but declined to comment. 2101
