We all know that leaving our dogs in the car on a hot sunny day for a long period of time is a bad idea. Temperatures can rise faster than we realize, putting our pets’ health and lives at risk.William Loopesko says he’s created a tool to help with just that.“I live in Colorado with my dog, Clovis. And Clovis and I enjoy hiking in the mountains, camping, etc, but that requires taking him in the car,” Loopesko says.Long car rides mean the occasional—and required—pit stop.“So, I wanted to have a way to be able to check on him and know that he’s always OK when I can’t be there with him,” he says.Loopesko created “PuppTech,” a device for your car that measures temperature and humidity levels.“It tells you the heat index, transmits all that data over a cellular connection, so I can at any time pull up how Clovis is doing on my phone.”Clovis is a 7-year-old male Labrador retriever, and Loopesko says his “comfortable” temperature range is anywhere between 41 and 72 degrees. The temperature ranges vary depending on the breed, sex, and age of the dog.“If it was above the 84 degrees for Clovis, I would be getting a text message every 5 minutes saying, ‘Hey it’s too hot. Hey it’s too hot. Hey it’s too hot.’”Decals on car windows let others know that a dog’s health is being monitored while an owner is away. But experts say an app should never replace common sense.“I worry that it could be a little bit of a false sense of security for some people,” says veterinarian Dr. Leslie Longo with Denver’s VCA Firehouse animal hospital.“I think you still have to be mindful if you’re leaving your dog in the car that it could still get hot, something could go wrong.”Loopesko says he wouldn’t disagree, but he says the app gives people one more tool for those times when owners just don’t have a choice.“If dogs were allowed to go everywhere, then our product wouldn’t need to exist,” Loopesko says.Loopesko says PuppTech is already being shipped out to its crowdfunders, and he expects it’ll be available to the general public before the end of the year. 2069

Two people, including a 12-year-old girl, were killed and 16 other children hurt in a stabbing spree in Japan on Tuesday — a rare act of public violence in a country considered one of the safest in the world. The attack took place near a park in the city of Kawasaki, about 13 miles (21 kilometers) from Tokyo, authorities said.Kawasaki Police said a total of 19 people were stabbed, including the two victims who died. Police said the girl killed was named Hanako Kuribayashi and a male victim was called Satoshi Oyama, a 39-year-old government employee. The suspected attacker also died from a "self-inflicted wound," Japanese public broadcaster NHK reported. Police officers previously told NHK that the man, believed to be in his 40s or 50s, had stabbed himself in the neck.Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said the attack was "heartbreaking.""We must keep our children safe at all costs," Abe told reporters. "I've instructed the related ministers to take immediate action to ensure the children's safety in going to and leaving school."NHK reported earlier Tuesday that three people -- including an elementary school student -- were in critical condition. It's unclear if the girl who died was among them.Japan is considered one of the world's safest developed countries. It boasts one of the world's lowest homicide rates, 1342

While restaurants in some states start to open their doors to dine-in customers, bars and nightclubs are still closed in most places. Now, those businesses are getting creative when it comes to connecting with customers."My bar manager called me in the middle of the week saying she just saw a club in L.A. doing a DJ livestream and she said we should do that, too, to keep our customers well connected," said Chris Dauria, owner of Johnny's Hideaway in Atlanta, Georgia. Before COVID-19, Johnny's Hideaway would see up to 700 customers on a Saturday night. Their first virtual DJ livestream several weeks ago drew just as many viewers."It was really cool that 700 people were sitting in their living room or wherever, in their pajamas dancing around to the junk we play every night. That’s pretty cool," said Dauria.Johnny's Hideaway isn't alone. Nightclubs across the country are holding music livestream events, reaching out to their customers on social media and encouraging them to tune in. Stereo Nightclub in Chicago has been livestreaming DJ sessions with more than 33,000 people watching. Marquee nightclub in New York is doing the same."He's in the DJ booth by himself with one of my other DJs taking requests and doing the social media thing like 20 feet away from him. It’s the funniest thing you’ve ever seen," said Dauria. Dauria plans on holding live DJ sessions every weekend until they open their physical doors to dancing customers. "It's been really tough because I have a restaurant license, but we’re primarily known as a dance club. I get hit at least two to three times a day on social media with 'Hey, when are you going to open, don’t worry about COVID, we'll be safe when we dance,' just crazy requests," said Dauria. He says the livestreams are the only way they've been able to connect with roughly 90% of their customers. They have a restaurant in the club, as well, that has opened to diners, but most of their business comes from dancers on the weekends. "I think the one thing I’ve learned from this is, there are a ton of people out there who feel that it's their home away from home. They go there and dance and have a release and I think it’s important so at least by us just doing this four hours a week, there’s a Hideaway out there that’s coming back soon. Whenever it happens, it happens," said Dauria. These clubs are giving customers some happiness and music to dance to even if it's from the couch on Saturday nights. 2470

When Don Grundmann took the podium to boos and jeers at a Modesto City Council meeting Wednesday, he appeared angry that some people had called his efforts to organize a "straight pride" event in the California city racist. He singled out Councilmember Kristi Ah You, accusing her of "pulling the race card" and allegedly inflaming tensions by "attacking us as racists."Then he appeared to make a slip of the tongue."We haven't done anything," he said. "We're a totally peaceful, racist group."The crowd erupted in laughter. As Grundmann tried to regain control of the room, he said his group was "here to defend all races" and claimed that Planned Parenthood was the "greatest mass murderer of blacks in this nation's history."Shortly after, he was told his time was up and the crowd booed as he left the podium.Grundmann, who previously ran two failed campaigns for the US Senate, leads a group called the National Straight Pride Coalition. It claims on its website that heterosexuality, the nuclear family and Western civilization, among other institutions, are under attack. The group is planning a "straight pride" parade in a local park on August 24.Modesto is home to about 214,000 people, according to the latest Census.Dozens of residents voiced oppositionOver more than four hours, almost 30 constituents spoke against the event. A handful spoke in favor of it, citing free speech.Matthew Mason, a Modesto native and Turlock resident, called event organizers "white supremacists.""I'm here to condemn the straight pride event and to unequivocally state that this white supremacist rhetoric is not speech that deserves protection," Mason said at the meeting. "Whenever this rhetoric is given a platform, violence always follows."CNN has attempted to reach Grundmann but was unable to leave a message because his voice mailbox was full. He has not responded to an email request for comment.Marjorie Sturdy, vice president of the Modesto Progressive Democrats, also voiced her opposition at the meeting."You've never heard of anybody losing a job because they're straight or white," she told CNN. "You've never heard of anybody not being able to obtain a job because they're straight. The entitlement of being straight and white shouldn't be celebrated. You get to celebrate that every day of your life."Sturdy said that the Modesto Progressive Democrats are teaming up with local community groups to organize an event on the same day as the "straight pride" parade. She said it will include music, speeches and prayer."It'll be a colorful, fun, celebration of life," Sturdy said. The 'straight pride' event needs city approvalThe City of Modesto said it hopes to decide on the "straight pride" application Friday.Thomas Reeves, spokesman for the City Manager, told CNN that officials are evaluating the risk to the city, residents and participants. He added that the city's final determination would not be an indication of where it stood on the issue."Whatever decision is made on the permit is no way is a reflection of the city's perspective, opinion or views on the issue," Reeves said.In late June, a "straight pride parade" planned in Boston on August 31 became 3183

WASHINGTON — The Federal Reserve took emergency action Sunday and slashed its benchmark interest rate by a full percentage point to nearly zero and announced it would purchase more Treasury securities to encourage lending to try to offset the impact of the coronavirus outbreak. The central bank said the effects of the outbreak will weigh on economic activity in the near term and pose risks to the economic outlook. The central bank said it will keep rates at nearly zero until it feels confident the economy has weathered recent events. The Fed also said it has dropped its requirements that banks hold cash reserves in another move to encourage lending. The Fed's announcement comes after President Donald Trump badgered the the apolitical agency throughout weekend, pushing them to lower rates. Trump lauded the decision at a press conference at the White House on Sunday evening."I'm very happy," Trump said. "...you won't hear anything bad from me (about the fed) unless it's a few months from now." 1018
