The yield on Thursday's 91-day repurchase agreement rose to 1.57 percent, up 16 basis points from its previous repurchase operation.Thursday's operations together with Tuesday's 25 billion yuan worth of one-year bill issuance brought the weekly total raised to 45 billion yuan (6.6 billion U.S. dollars). But 211 billion yuan (30.9 billion U.S. dollars) of bills matured this week, meaning a net weekly injection of cash.The central bank's net injection this week was the third straight week of net injection. It pumped 159 billion yuan (23.3 billion U.S. dollars) into the market in the previous two weeks.Since mid-May, China's banks have faced a short-term money squeeze as the PBOC introduced a series of tightening measures to cool the booming property sector.Zhao Qingming, a senior research fellow at China Construction Bank, the country's second largest lender, said the yield changes on central bank bills reflects tight money supply in the short-term.Rising bill yields usually reflect lenders' reduced demand for safety or their cash hoarding.For the whole week, yields on central-bank short-term debt instruments rose compared to the previous week.The yield on one-year bills jumped 8.32 basis points to 2.0929 percent while the yield on three-month bills climbed 4.04 basis points to 1.5704 percent. CHANGSHA, June 23 (Xinhua) -- Six men were trapped underground after being overwhelmed by a coal gas leak in central China' s Hunan Province Wednesday. Three of the men remain missing, a government spokesman said.Rescuers have confirmed that three of the trapped miners are alive as rescue crews had contacted them with underground communication systems, according to a spokesman from Jiahe County Government.h The trapped workers were gas inspectors and repairmen, the spokesman said.The accident took plane at noon Wednesday in a 30-meter-deep shaft at the Tianxin Mining Company located in Jiahe County of Hunan Province, which is a legal mining company owned by the local township.A tunnel to reach the trapped men has been completed and the rescue work is continuing.The cause of the accident is under investigation.

BEIJING, July 8 (Xinhua) -- Ten years after it unveiled a strategy to promote growth in its western area, China announced a plan to continue the initiative, even as the world's third largest economy strives to shift to a more domestic-driven growth."The plan will not only benefit the western region, but is also crucial to the sound and fast development of the whole nation," Du Ying, deputy director of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), the country's top economic planner, said at a Thursday press conference."Under the new plan, the central government will focus on boosting economic growth, raising people's living standards and enhancing environmental conservation in the western region during the next ten years," Du said.The central government will also enhance support for development in the region by lowering tax rates and prices for industrial lands, he added.The NDRC, along with other departments, will compile a catalogue of industries in the western region covered by the government's favorable policies. Companies in these industries will enjoy a favorable corporate income tax rate of 15 percent, compared to the regular rate of 25 percent.The move to further develop the west came as the government took steps such as subsidizing auto and home appliance buyers, to boost domestic demand and lessen reliance on exports.Challenges for China's future development lay in "whether we can continue to boost domestic demand and make it a foundation for overall sustainable growth and whether we can remove constraints on resources and environment," Du said.Turning to this vast region and market was a strategic move, which would help China bolster domestic demand and accelerate transformation of the economic growth pattern, Vice Premier Li Keqiang had said.The vast, resource-rich western region has great potential to help enhance domestic demand as the regional population accounts for 27.5 percent of the country's total, while consumption only takes 18.4 percent of national retail sales, Du said.Early this week, NDRC said it will unveil 23 new infrastructure projects in the western region this year, with a total investment of 682.2 billion yuan (100.62 billion U.S. dollars). GUANLING, Guizhou, June 29 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu Tuesday urged local government to use all resources to rescue victims of a landslide in southwest China's Guizhou Province.Rescuers should save the lives of the victims and treat the wounded using all possible means, said Hui during an inspection tour of the disaster-hit area from late Monday to Tuesday.He also called for the utmost efforts to properly resettle people affected by the landslide and sounded caution regarding additional landslides.He said all areas prone to landslides should be examined closely and nearby residents must be evacuated immediately upon any sign of an impending landslide.Further, information about the disaster relief efforts should be made public in a timely, objective, open and transparent manner, said Hui.The landslide occurred at 2:30 p.m. on Monday in Dazhai Village, Gangwu Township of Guanling County, burying 107 people from 38 families. Rescuers said their chances of survival were slim.
