SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A school district superintendent and a Native American reservation leader in North County are speaking out against the proposed placement of a sexually violent predator. On Thursday, there were strong reactions from those who are close to North County's Pauma Valley home where sexually violent predator Joshua Cooley could soon be placed. “When people like this are placed by our borders, it's very concerning,” Temet Aguilar, the Chairman of the Pauma Band of Mission Indians, said Thursday. Aguilar is encouraging the hundreds of families on and near the reservation to speak out against the placement of 40-year-old Cooley, whose victims were 12-years-old.“They think this is an area that's rural and there's nobody out here but actually it's more dangerous. Predators can hide out here. We have a tremendous amount of agriculture. We have rural lands,” he added.Valley Center-Pauma Unified School District Superintendent Ron McCowan told ABC10 News they'll write letters if they have to to make sure they're voices on the matter is heard. “We'll write the letters if we have to. We'll show up at the court hearing if we have to," McCowan said. “We'll make every effort we can. We'll work alongside our local officials and make sure that our voice for our community is heard and make sure they understand the risk that they're putting our young children in.”This Tuesday, DA Summer Stephan sent a letter to the Department of State Hospitals, urging the Department to find a different place for Cooley, who's from Northern California, not San Diego. He has no local connections.It's unclear why the Department is seeking his housing in San Diego.Next month, a Humboldt County judge will consider a request from the Department to place him in Pauma.If granted, it would mark the first time that such a predator from outside San Diego would be placed in our county.DA Stephan has called the move reckless and irresponsible. She said that in July, a San Diego judge struck down a request to place 75-year-old sexually violent predator Joseph Bocklett in the same Pauma home.According to an ABC station in Northern California, Cooley’s been denied placement in at least four different areas in and near Humboldt.The Department of State Hospitals will not confirm any information about Cooley, citing privacy concerns. A Humboldt County court official called ABC10 News on Thursday to say the Court would not comment.On Oct. 9, at 8:30 a.m., a hearing on Cooley's placement will be available for viewing at https://www.humboldt.courts.ca.gov/.Those interested in submitting a public comment for the hearing can do so between Sept. 15-23. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Young Marine from San Diego won a scholarship to escort WWII veterans to Iwo Jima and Guam in Spring of 2021."I was just blown away because I'm not only so excited to go to Iwo Jima and Guam and experience the culture and immerse myself but also being able to escort a veteran. That is just something that is a once in a lifetime opportunity," Sophia Righthouse, 17, said.The trip is part of the Young Marines' annual "Reunion of Honor." The week-long trip brings WWII veterans back to the islands they fought on so many years ago and educates Young Marines on history, culture, and leadership.The trip happens each March, and in 2021 the pandemic is putting it at risk. Righthouse isn't worried. "I know the government is working with Japan right now to make sure we can go over," she says.Righthouse won the Jimmy Trimble Scholarship from the American Veterans Center. The scholarship is named after a young athlete who gave up the opportunity to play professional baseball to join the Marines.Trimble died in battle on Iwo Jima on March 1, 1945, at 19-years-old.Righthouse exemplifies Trimble's "finest qualities" needed to earn the scholarship. You may recognize her name from her heroism in 2018 when she evacuated people in an apartment complex that was on fire.She earned an award from the San Diego Fire Department, and a day named in her honor by San Diego City Council.She's won the National Honor Society Volunteer Service Award for completing more than 1,300 hours of community service.Righthouse excelled in cheerleading, dance, and in the Young Marines. Her uniform is adorned with dozens of badges, and medals."Honestly I think it's my family and my friends that push me to strive every single day to be the best person I can possibly be," she said.She found her calling as a Young Marine when she was 8-years-old at a parade."As an 8-year-old you don't see anything like that in the world, other than in the actual military. So I saw them marching, they were all uniformed and disciplined and I said I want to do something like that," she said with a smile.She joined the Young Marines that year and has been in the program for nine years."It's a really great program to strengthen your leader inside of you and bring out the natural born leader that we all have," she said.This trip will be one of her last before she graduates high school.She applied to several military academies and colleges and hopes to make a positive impact on the world as an Operations Officer.When asked what she wants San Diegans to know about her journey, she said "one of the biggest things I've learned, even though I'm 17, is just trust the process and believe in yourself." 2701

The group says increased radiation is extremely harmful and can lead to seizures and heart failure.The city of San Diego accounted their 5G partnership with Verizon in April. The deal adds 0 million of infrastructure including new equipment cells on city-owned light poles. Police say the increased smart technology can help increase safety. Protesters today disagree."There’s no safety testing for this plan at all," said Susan Brinchman with the Center for Electrosmog Prevention. "I know why they didn’t do the testing, because there’s no way to safely implement this. Scientists are beginning to associate it with the development of cancer."A New York Times article released this week says 5G is actually safe. The article cites a Temple University researcher who says," 5G emissions, if anything, should be safer than previous generations,”.Mayor Kevin Faulconer says the agreement with Verizon will not only enhance cell service but also keep communities safer and cut costs for taxpayers. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A six-year-old boy was rushed to the hospital after accidentally shooting himself Tuesday night, according to the San Diego Police Department.The incident happened around 8 p.m. in the 4300 block of 52nd St. in the Colina Del Sol neighborhood near City Heights, a few blocks north of Fay Elementary School.San Diego police say the child was playing with the gun when he shot himself in the chest.City News Service, citing information from SDPD Officer John Buttle, reported the boy was in his grandmother's room when he discovered a .22-caliber handgun underneath a mattress.Police say the bullet went through the boy's chest, and the child was conscious and breathing when officers arrived. The boy was taken to Rady Children's Hospital with unknown injuries. His condition is unknown at this time. 827
