Take Wednesday, when America celebrates National Cheeseburger Day.Across the country, hungry Americans can grab special burger deals in honor of the delicious day.And what's a holiday without a little tradition. The burger is said to have been invented in New Haven, Conn., in 1900 when Louis Lassen took a steak trimmings, grilled them into a patty, and served it between two slices of bread. But, of course, there are several rival claims to that. The cheeseburger has its own origin claim out of Denver, Colo., where it's believed Louis Ballast created the cheeseburger at his restaurant in 1935.In any case, the dish is enjoyed by many throughout the world who are much more interested in its taste than true origin. And by now, we're sure you're more interested in today's deals. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Several recent storms to hit the San Diego County region could spell disaster for erosion prone areas of the coast and inland valleys.Rainfall running over coastal bluffs with a history of erosion could increase the likelihood of future erosions along our shores. Adam Young, a scientist with Scripps Institution of Oceanography San Diego, says an active season already could led to more crumbling of local cliff sides following heavy showers."Pretty much whenever you have a new rainfall event, you'll pretty much see a new landslide ... The more rain we get, the more landslides," Young says. "Every time you have a failure, stress distribution can change."RELATED: Video: Bluff collapse halts train travel through Del MarAlong the coast, the potential is worsened by waves crashing against the coast. As waves erode the bottom of cliffs, rainfall running over the top can create more stress and instability, Young added."As long as waves are hitting the cliff, they're going to keep falling down," Young said. "At the beach, waves and rain work together to speed up the process."This month, Scripps researchers were surveying a Del Mar cliffside when a 55-foot-wide slab crumbled before their eyes — and on video."it's almost certain that landslide was caused by that rainfall," Young said refering to recent rains. "The state we're in now is because we had a bunch of rain. Any extra rain is a problem."RELATED: Researchers tracking crumbling Del Mar bluffsAt the beach, minerals in the cliff soak up water like a sponge, says San Diego State University Professor Emeritus Pat Abbott. Rainfall slowly moves through rocks, increasing the weight of the cliff and sapping its strength — until gravity takes over."That water is very slowly flowing through there," Abbott said of San Diego's coastal bluffs. "After the rain stops, several weeks later we'll be back to before the rain started. We're definitely not over."That's not to say inland bluffs aren't at risk. While rainfall helps speed up the process at the coast alongside waves, the risk remains further into the county as well.Inland, the minerals actually swell as it absorbs water, Abbott said, becoming heavy until, once again, gravity grabs hold.RELATED: Devastating 'ARk' storm envisioned for California by U.S. Geological Survey"When we go inland, we're talking about clay minerals. Think about a regular old book. If you took a paper book and dumped it in water, it would swell," Abbot said. "[Inland minerals] actually take the water inside their structure and swell ... they lose strength."Abbott pointed to San Diego's 1982-83 El Ni?o, which caused major destruction to inland communities as well as coastal communities."[There's a] high probability that these cliff collapses will continue at least through the rainy season," Abbott says. "We're getting to the place that it wouldn't be a surprise if we had inland landslides that affect homes." 2944

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Six candidates for San Diego's next mayor met on the debate stage Friday to discuss the city's housing and homelessness crises. The solutions for San Diego's affordable housing challenges ranged across each candidate, which included State Assemblyman Todd Gloria, Councilman Scott Sherman, City Council President Pro Tem Barbara Bry, activist Tasha Williamson, computer tech Rich Riel, and family nurse practitioner Gita Appelbaum."Let's get real about this. This is strictly a supply and demand issue. So you need to make sure that we create more supply so we can start bringing down the cost of housing," Sherman said.RELATED: Poll: Gloria maintains lead in mayor's race; convention center measure is close"We need a charter change to stop the developers taking our land, which they have done for the last 40 years. Lease it. Don't sell it," Riel said. "It is criminal. What is going on in the real estate assets department because they are so focused on giving away our land."Rent control was also a topic of discussion."I do not support rent control. As a businesswoman, I know it simply doesn't work. It doesn't create one new unit of housing. In fact, it may stymie new construction," said Bry.RELATED: San Diego's top Democratic mayoral candidates square off in debate"I do not support it. Redcap, I think is a reasonable alternative to address escalating cost out," Gloria said."I want to drop my control to 2 percent with owners subsidies," said Williamson. But all of that was tied to homelessness. During the 2019 "We All Count" point-in-time count, more than 8,000 homeless people were living in San Diego County.Candidates specifically focused on what the role of police should be when it comes to interacting with the homeless population.RELATED: Councilman Sherman's candidacy will alter mayor's race"The cops, the police department ... That's not their role," said Appelbaum. "We need health providers ... We need compassionate care.""Well, law enforcement right now is being burdened by Faulconer, and by the city," Riel said. "We are not addressing the homeless issue in the City of San Diego.""Police should not be used to incarcerate people into a jail that has the highest rate of in-custody death," said Williamson."I think we're using police officers to address these individuals is not a good use of police time, given we have a shortage of police officers. We need more trained social workers on the street," said Bry. According to a scientific 10News/Union-Tribune poll, the mayoral race hasn't changed much, with 29 percent of likely voters still backing Gloria, with Sherman and Bry the only other candidates to break double digits. Another 32 percent of voters were still undecided. 2737
