(KGTV) — A beloved visitor center and community "treasure" designed by a famed artist is routinely being turned into a trashed party pad.The small building, dubbed the Hubbell Kiosk, is located in the Crestridge Ecological Reserve. Designed by famed artist and architect James Hubbell, the partial build was destroyed by the Cedar Fire in 2003. The wood, clay and straw-filled project was rebuilt several years later.Then last month, Lands Manager Kyle Smith discovered a smashed skylight and a mess inside."Vomit, beer bottles, drug paraphernalia. It looked like a war zone went off," said Smith.The scene they left behind, including wrecked displays and broken chairs, has become a familiar one.Video surveillance has captured the party goers in five break-ins since early August. Some of the faces appear to be repeat revelers.The break-ins leads to thousands of dollars in repairs and extra security precautions. Endangered Habitats Conservancy, the non-profit that oversees the site, hopes someone will recognize the photos of the vandals. Smith has a message for the party-goers."You're not welcome here. EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - A young trick-or-treater sorting through her candy made a stunning discovery."They were excited. Loved Halloween and candy," said Jean Bilbrey.As with so many other families, Halloween night for the Bilbrey's three children - ages 11,9 and 4 - was a blur of costumes, front doors and a steady flow of treats. Their family started around Falmouth Drive and Virgina Court and walked for several hours, stopping by 30 to 50 homes. In all, they filled about six buckets' worth. This past weekend, the kids went about the task of sorting the candy."My middle daughter, who is nine, said 'Mom, Mom, I found something in my candy' and brought me a ring," said Bilbrey.It was a woman's ring, possibly a precious one. "Looks like a wedding band similar to mine. Possibly an anniversary band ... somebody wears on a hand that means something to somebody ... my first thought was we need to get this back to the owner. As a woman, my jewelry, I don't have much but what I do have is very important to me," said Bilbrey.The piece of jewelry likely slipped off while someone was handing out candy. Like any good mystery, there are a few clues, including the candy found next to the ring. "Candy corn and the Sour Patch candies. That's what she had in her hand was the candy corn," said Bilbrey.Bilbrey spread word of the ring on social media, but so far, she's come up empty."I'll keep it safe. I've got it here. DULZURA, Calif. (KGTV) — Firefighters battled a vegetation fire near the U.S.-Mexico border, a day after crews pretreated the area for a fire burning south of the border.The fire was reported along Marron Valley Rd. near Dulzura Thursday, according to Cal Fire San Diego. By 6:30 p.m. the fire was estimated to have grown to about 80 acres and was 10 percent contained. No structures were immediately threatened, Cal Fire said.Air and group fire resources were attacking the flames, Cal Fire added.Wednesday night, Cal Fire made air drops near Tecate after flames from a brush fire crept up to the border from the Mexico side of the border. Thursday morning, Cal Fire reported a "significant decrease" in that fire. 723
EL CAJON (CNS) - A man who rear-ended a pregnant woman's car in Ramona two years ago while driving drunk, killing the woman and her unborn child, was sentenced Monday to 34 years to life in state prison. Andrew Milonis, 46, was convicted last month of murder, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and hit-and-run for the Mother's Day 2017 crash that killed 29-year-old Jessica Foderingham and her unborn daughter, who she and her husband had planned to name Ayanna. Deputy District Attorney Laura Evans read a letter from the victim's husband, who was driving ahead of his wife when he saw the crash in his rear-view mirror, pulled over and tried to pull her out of the wreckage. Her two young sons from a previous relationship were in the car with their stepfather, and saw the aftermath. ``I still hear them screaming in my dreams, saying, `Daddy, save Mommy,' and `Mommy, get up,''' he wrote. Deputy District Attorney Laura Evans said Milonis' blood-alcohol content was nearly quadruple the legal limit when his SUV slammed into the back of Foderingham's car. Milonis had been drinking throughout the day, downing at least seven drinks at a local bar before he got behind the wheel of his GMC Yukon, the prosecutor said. Evans said a bartender recommended that Milonis arrange a Lyft ride to get home, but he ignored the advice. Milonis struck a tree and multiple telephone poles before crashing into Foderingham's car, Evans said. After the crash, Milonis continued driving to a nearby hotel, where employees called a Lyft driver for him. When the Lyft driver arrived and asked Milonis where he wanted to go, the defendant told the driver something to the effect of, ``Anywhere I can get a drink,'' according to Evans. The prosecutor told jurors the impact of the crash left a partial imprint from Milonis' license plate on the back of Foderingham's car, and there was no evidence of mechanical issues on either vehicle that might have contributed to the crash. EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- An act of kindness on the job went a long way for an El Cajon family. On Christmas eve, two El Cajon police officers didn’t hesitate to buy dinner for a family living in their car. While always ready to respond to calls, officers never know exactly what they'll find. On this Christmas Eve call, they found a woman named Juanita and her two children, living in their car. Detective Travis Howard is President of the El Cajon Police Officers Association. He says the officers bought the family dinner at Jack in the Box and then closed the call. But after their shift, they wanted to do more, dipping in their own pockets to get the family a hotel room for two nights so they wouldn't be homeless on Christmas. The two police officers who first helped the family didn’t do it for the praise and asked to remain anonymous. 859
