SAN DIEGO (KGTV/CNS) – San Diego City Council Monday passed a proposal that bans Styrofoam and single-use plastics in a 5-3 vote. In July, the City Council Rules Committee voted 3-2 in favor of prohibiting the use and sale of containers and other items made with Styrofoam.The measure, proposed by Councilman Chris Ward, prohibits the use and sale of egg cartons, food service containers, coolers, ice chests, pool or beach toys, mooring buoys and navigation markers made partially or completely of polystyrene foam, commonly called by the brand name Styrofoam.The city's Environmental Services Department must also provide a list of safe, affordable alternatives to polystyrene products should the ban go into effect.Polystyrene products don't degrade the way more natural products do, taking hundreds of years to break down. Because of this long life span, marine and terrestrial fauna can and do mistake polystyrene for food."Our growing reliance on disposable plastic to fuel our ‘culture of convenience' is not without cost. Globally, an average of eight million tons of plastic ends up in the ocean," said Roger Kube, a policy adviser with the 5 Gyres Institute, when Ward introduced the proposal in May. "Once there, sunlight and currents shred plastic debris into smaller particles called microplastics, which absorb and concentrate toxic chemicals up the marine food chain and into our bodies. From plankton to fish, and to humans that eat seafood, plastic pollution is changing the very chemistry of life."Opponents of the ban claim it will have a disproportionately negative effect on local restaurants who may not be able to afford more expensive alternatives to polystyrene containers the way larger chain restaurants can. A study by the California Restaurant Association, San Diego Chapter, found that the ban could force small food service businesses to spend up to 145 percent more for polystyrene alternatives like compostable paper."We're opposed to the ban because polystyrene is a recyclable product," said Chris Duggan, the San Diego chapter's director of local government affairs. Duggan compared polystyrene's potential for reuse to that of an empty pizza box or a used paper plate and noted that polystyrene can be and is recycled into things like crown molding.Restaurant owners in City Council District 4, represented by Myrtle Cole, pushed back on the proposal Friday when they delivered more than 50 letters opposing the ban to Cole's district office. Restaurant owners in District 4 claim that Cole has not met with them despite multiple requests to voice their concerns."The impacts of Styrofoam and single-use plastics are permanent and threaten the health of San Diegans, wildlife, and industries critical to our region," Ward's office said. San Diego (KGTV)- As Westin Hotel workers fight for better wages, local business owners are fighting to keep business.Hotel workers have been on strike for the past few weeks. Business owners say customers are now avoiding the area and its costing them money.Joey Aiello owns a shoe shine stand that sits outside of The Westin Hotel. He says he’s seen fewer customers this month because of the strike. “People don’t think its a big business but it supports my family,” says Aiello.He says since the workers hit the picket line, he’s lost 00 in business. “The first week they were here I made less than 0 a day. We have to make 0 a day to stay a float.” Other business also say they are concerned about the noise.The San Diego Police Department says they have received six complaints since October 9th. A spokesperson with Marriott International sent us this statement that says in part:“We are disappointed with some of the tactics the union has deployed including the noise levels. We continue to work with local police to address these issues and we are grateful to our guests for their patience during this time.”The Unite Here Union President, Bridgette Browning, says employees are now in negotiations with the hotel. She also sent us a statement that says:“While we are sympathetic to neighboring businesses - we believe the Marriott has the power to fix this strike and the businesses should be demanding that Marriott do the right thing. The workers are not to blame for the low standards that Marriott has created at the Westin San Diego Gaslamp. SAN DIEGO, Calif (KGTV) - In an effort to calm people's fears about new streetlights equipped with cameras and sensors, the City of San Diego will hold a public forum Wednesday night to answer questions and explain what the new technology does, and does not do.The meeting is from 5:30 to 7 pm, at the Malcom X Library on 5148 Market Street.Over the last two years, the city has installed more than 3,000 new streetlights that have "Smart City" technology built into them. The lights have cameras, microphones and sensors to track activity around them throughout the day.RELATED: "Smart" Streetlights coming to San Diego"Pedestrians walking by, cars parking and then leaving, cars traveling by, which direction, how fast," explains Cody Hooven, the City of San Diego's Chief Sustainability Officer.It will also track weather information in real time.That information is turned into meta-data and uploaded to the cloud. According to the city, it can be used for research or to build apps to make life easier. The footage from the cameras isn't accessible to the public, and the cameras are not for surveillance. According to the city, the footage has already been used to help SDPD solve a handful of crimes.Hooven also says the cameras will use GPS technology to ensure they only get footage of public spaces, and not areas that are expected to be private. The system uses a process called "curtilage" to blur any areas that shouldn't be shown.Hooven says the city is ready to answer any other questions people have about the new lights at Wednesday's meeting."Technology is coming and we're trying to embrace it to provide a lot of benefits to the city and save us money," she says.
