CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Lifeguards in Coronado are on alert after spotting at least two juvenile white sharks Wednesday and Thursday. According to lifeguards, the sharks were at least a quarter to half a mile off the coast and didn’t appear to be engaging swimmers or showing signs of aggression. “Under existing protocol, the City was not required to close the beach or publicly report the sightings,” said City Manager Blair King. We also are working with Chris Lowe at the Shark Lab to find out more about the separate sightings and what might be going on.”Around 4 p.m. Thursday, a San Diego Fire-Rescue helicopter was called in and confirmed at least two four to five foot-long white sharks off the coast. The city says a lifeguard followed the sharks as they made their way to Point Loma. The city plans to try to tag or take DNA from the sharks over the weekend. According to city officials, it’s not uncommon to see juvenile white sharks offshore. “The shark population is rising and sightings are becoming more commonplace,” the city said in a news release. 1301

CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Hundreds gathered on Coronado Saturday morning for the 2019 Witches Tea. The event, organized by Rebecca Geiss, started in 1999 with nine women. Since its humble origin, the event has exploded in size. This year, 254 people showed up for the 21 and older event. The celebration centers around attendees dressing up as witches, dancing, and having a spooktacular time on beautiful Coronado. Photos from this year’s event show a multitude of creativity with some dressed as Glinda the Good Witch from “The Wizzard of Oz.” Other photos show some of the women embracing group costumes. Throughout the day, the women take buses to establishments throughout Coronado and San Diego. Attendees aren't told where they're going, adding an element of surprise to Witches Tea. In 2018, all the proceeds from the event went to the C4 Foundation, which provides support and resources through science-based programs to active-duty Navy SEALs and their families. COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium announced that their giraffe, named Cami, died early Saturday morning after having a Caesarian section to deliver her calf, which died shortly after delivery.Cami collapsed around 1 a.m. and was unable to return to her feet. She died shortly after.Cami went into labor on Dec. 4 and veterinarians discovered the baby giraffe was presenting hooves first, a condition with extremely low survival rates, according to zoo officials.The Zoo’s animal care team performed an emergency C-section. After the calf was removed, the veterinary team found that the calf had serious congenital defects and would not have survived even if it had been born front hooves first, officials said.Cami was a 6-year-old Masai giraffe that came to the Columbus Zoo in 2013 from the Nashville Zoo.The death of Cami and her calf mark the third Masai giraffe to die in the past 30 days at the zoo. COLERAIN TOWNSHIP, Ohio - A 50-year-old woman stabbed a victim in the face with a grill fork so hard it became embedded, according to court documents.Shawn Jones is scheduled to appear in court Monday to face a felonious assault charge. The incident happened Saturday at Jones’ home near Cincinnati, according to Colerain Township police officer Kyle Frandoni.The fork tines were approximately 2 inches long, Frandoni wrote in his affidavit.Jones was arrested Sunday and is being held at the Justice Center. 555

DADE CITY, Fla. — Pasco County Fire Rescue is working to extinguish a large fire that destroyed three chicken coop barns early Thursday morning.Officials say an employee who lives on the Cal-Maine Foods property, located in Dade City, called in the first alarm around 1 a.m.When firefighters arrived on the scene, they immediately called for a second alarm after noting the size of the fire.The fire destroyed three barns that each contain up to 80,000 chickens each, and officials say at least 250,000 chickens total were killed.Crews were forced to battle the flames from an exterior position because the buildings were collapsing and propane tanks were going off.“We’re trying to keep everyone safe. We’re trying to fight the fire from outside the building," Chief Shawn Whited of Pasco County Fire Rescue said. "We haven’t been able to enter those buildings yet just because of the amount of fire and the number of hazards that are in there.”A front end loader also responded to assist in the firefighting efforts.This part of Pasco County is rural and there are no water hydrants nearby.
