SAN DIEGO — Some parents are keeping their children out of school Tuesday to protest the San Diego Unified School District’s sex education curriculum.A group of parents say the district’s Sexual Health Education Program (SHEP) is too graphic and not age-appropriate for their students, and they are urging district officials to eliminate the program.The parents have taken their concerns to the district’s School Board, but they said board members refuse to replace the curriculum.District officials said students can opt out of the course, but parents want the images they consider graphic gone.Ashley Bever, a substitute teacher who is organizing the one-day protest, said she was surprised to see all of the materials student had access to.“I thought a 6th grade teacher did not write this. Where it did come from? Why is it so explicit? SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 28-year-old man who appeared to suffer some type of medical emergency and passed out after fighting with deputies arresting him at a North County convenience store last week died at a hospital, authorities reported Wednesday.Marco Napoles Rosales of El Monte was pronounced brain-dead Tuesday, six days after his violent encounter with law enforcement personnel, according to sheriff's officials. A ruling on his cause of death remains on hold pending an autopsy.The events that led to Rosales' confrontation with law enforcement personnel began about 4:30 a.m. last Thursday, when a 911 caller reported that he had been acting strangely in a Circle K market on state Route 76 in Fallbrook, seemed to be "under the influence of drugs" and was refusing to leave the business, Lt. Rich Williams said.RELATED: San Diego deputy, suspect hospitalized after violent confrontationEight deputies arrived a short time later, contacted the Los Angeles-area resident and tried to evaluate him, at which point he allegedly became belligerent.During an ensuing struggle, the patrol personnel shocked Rosales with an electric stun gun, and he bit one of them on the hand, Williams said.The deputies were able to get Rosales into restraints after two men who saw what was happening while driving by hurried over and helped subdue him.A short time later, while being taken to a hospital for an examination, the suspect experienced apparent medical distress and lost consciousness.When informed that Rosales was beyond recovery, his family decided to keep him on life support for organ-donation purposes, the lieutenant said. 1636

SAN DIEGO — Sisters Pizza on the edge of Hillcrest just celebrated its one-year anniversary. The party wasn’t exactly what owner Emily Green Lake had in mind. "We're not constantly doing refills, bringing them condiments the way that we used to,” she said. “Salt and pepper shakers are a thing of the past. I don't know that we'll ever see those again.” About two weeks ago, county restaurants got the green light to once again host guests. While Lake doesn't have to, she is keeping the dining room closed to the public for safety reasons. Instead, she opened eight of the 22 tables on her front patio, spaced out for social distancing. “It's nice to see people back there, but it's sad to think of the opportunities that my business is missing out on,” Lake said. Still, not every restaurant is hosting guests . Some are opting to stay take-out only for the time being. The ones that have opened up, however, are finding limited takers. New reservation data from Open Table shows seated dining in San Diego is down about 80% from this time a year ago. One reason: only about 45 percent of the restaurants in Open Table’s network are even taking reservations. “Just because we've had to open the economy doesn't mean that there is no coronavirus anymore, and I think that's where people are coming from when they don't want to be among the masses,” Lake said. Lake said while delivery is up, overall sales are down 40%. And to make it harder, she's spending 80 cents per order on disposable plates and utensils. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A COVID-19 vaccine trial sponsored by drugmaker Johnson & Johnson is slated to get underway soon in San Diego, and will include an estimated 2,000 participants at UC San Diego Health, it was announced Thursday.Up to 60,000 participants will be recruited from 10 different countries around the world as the San Diego portion of the trial, dubbed ENSEMBLE, gets underway Oct. 7, according to UCSD.The efficacy, safety and immunogenicity of the drug Ad.26-COV2.S will be tested via a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, in which half of the participants receive a single-dose injection of the vaccine and the other half receive a placebo. All participants -- who must be 18 years of age or older and in reasonably good health -- will be monitored for signs of infection and COVID-19 over the next two years, according to UCSD.Researchers are particularly interested in recruiting participants at increased risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection due to where they live, their age or personal circumstances, such as working in essential jobs like first responders, health care, maintenance, construction, grocery stores or assisted living facilities.The San Diego trial will also emphasize participation from the region's underserved communities, as communities of color have shown higher rates of COVID-19-related hospitalization and/or death.UCSD cited data from the county showing measurably higher infection rates in the South Bay, including in Chula Vista, Imperial Beach and National City.Susan Little, professor of medicine at UC San Diego School of Medicine and principal investigator of the UC San Diego trial, said, "Many communities of color are experiencing higher rates of hospitalization related to COVID-19 than are observed in white, non-Hispanic people.
