OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - The City of Oceanside has unveiled its latest effort to achieve their zero waste goals set back in 2011.Green Oceanside Kitchen is a state-of-the-art food recovery and preservation facility dedicated to eliminating waste and feeding the community."We need to do better, we need to feed our community and educate our community," said Colleen Foster, the City's Environmental Officer. The City teamed up with O'Side Kitchen Collaborative for the new project. They'll collect unwanted food from farmers, backyards, and food businesses, turning the goods into something delicious. "I could've done anything, but for me, making an impact in my community as well as it tasting good is the best!" said Vallie Gilley, Executive Director of O' side Kitchen Collaborative. The facility includes a 1,700 square foot commercial kitchen and a 500 square foot fridge that can hold about a semi-truck load of food. There's also an interactive demonstration kitchen for culinary arts training and education. Foster says more than 40 percent of what is grown and produced in the U.S. is wasted. With the new green facility, planners hope to save 20 percent of what would've gone to waste."That's thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of pounds of food," said Foster. (KGTV) - Lifeguards saw a lot more people up and down San Diego's beaches, and with that, a lot more rule breakers."It’s definitely the start of summer, we’ve been pretty busy this weekend," Del Mar Lifeguard Chief Jon Edelbrock said.In Oceanside 10News saw a couple families staked out under umbrellas brought from home, just feet away a man was buried in the sand. All of which is not yet allowed under county orders.Right now you are allowed to exercise on the beach, walk or jog. In the water people can swim, surf, boat and fish. You cannot have gatherings, play sports or sit on the beach.Edelbrock said most of the crowd is following the rules, "probably 80% are coming down with good intentions."That other 20% then has to be contacted by police or lifeguards trying to enforce orders to stop the spread of the coronavirus."Their [lifeguards'] primary function is to facilitate safety out in the ocean to watch the water, watch over our kids and make rescues and do first aide and that kind of thing. Daily we’re making 1,000 extra contacts for people not considering the current rule set," Edelbrock said today's water conditions weren't great, making it more important to keep an eye seaward.In Pacific Beach a neighbor snapped a photo of a woman holding her dog, standing on the closed boardwalk while an officer was writing something. Officers in Columbus, Ohio are crediting a good Samaritan for tripping a suspect who was reaching into his waistband while being chased by officers. The police department released video from the April 3 incident on Thursday. Cameras captured the man, who Columbus Police are calling "Bill," casually sticking out his leg outside of a public library as the suspect ran behind him. The suspect then went flying into the sidewalk, giving officers an opportunity to arrest the unidentified suspect. Police said that they recovered a Glock 9 MM pistol with a high capacity extended clip containing 29 rounds near the suspect. Columbus Police added that citizen likely saved the suspect's life as officers might have shot the suspect for pulling out the gun. In the video released by Columbus Police, Bill said that he could see the suspect was holding something from his waistband."I heard him hit and the gun went sliding out," Bill said. "He went one way and the gun went another.""Thank you 'Bill' for sticking your leg out for us," Columbus Police said on the department's Facebook page.Columbus Police did not say what the 18-year-old suspect was wanted for.  1217

Oceanside may convert two of its elected city positions into City Council appointed ones, leading to concerns that the city is taking key decisions away from voters. The Oceanside City Council will decide Wednesday whether it should have the authority to appoint the City Clerk and City Treasurer. The city says the positions have become “significantly more complex” due to state laws and regulations. “Both positions perform critical City functions, and they require specialized education and experience to property discharge their many duties that likely cannot be properly achieved (or guaranteed) via an elected position.” The City Treasurer position has been a controversial one in Oceanside. In 2016, incumbent Gary Ernst died just weeks before the election, leaving Oceanside resident Nadine Scott as the lone living person on the ballot. However, multiple City Council members campaigned on Ernst’s behalf because they said Scott wasn’t qualified. Ernst won, clearing the way for the council to appoint Rafe Edward Trickey Jr. Scott said Monday she was troubled by the decision before the council. Current treasurer Victor Roy defeated Tricket Jr. in the 2018 election, and currently holds the office. City Clerk Zeb Navarro was recently appointed after Zack Beck stepped down to take a position in Escondido. Oceanside Mayor Peter Weiss said the jobs are part time and pay about ,000 a year.
