VENTURA COUNTY, Calif. – Some public lands are closing again, but not because of the coronavirus, because of litter and huge crowds.Paradise Falls, a hidden waterfall in Ventura County, California, was packed on Memorial Day weekend. Brian Stark, Administrator for the Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency says, "the pool under the falls is only slightly larger than the residential swimming pool, so imagine your swimming pool in your yard with several thousand people coming through it in a day.”He says those thousands of people also brought thousands of pounds of trash to the 40-foot waterfall.“People were trampling the wetland vegetation to get to the other side, we were taking multiple truckloads of garbage out daily and people brought a BBQ there and we have high fire danger areas,” said Stark.When we asked what kind of trash was left behind, Stark said, "people brought picnics and normally a hiker might bring an energy bar, not a box of pizza.”They treated the small waterfall like it was their personal space. And they stayed. So, the Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency, which looks after the falls and the surrounding park, decided to close the falls indefinitely. A fence sits around it now, and rangers routinely check in. Initially, police had to turn people away.‘“We just didn’t have the capacity to manage those crowds while protecting the resource.”Paradise Falls wasn't the only area with problems that weekend. Galveston Island in Texas, posted on Social Media that their team collected 156,000 pounds of trash on its beaches. Helen Lowman, President and CEO of "Keep America Beautiful," says it's a problem that the organization has been managing for 68 years.“Everyone had been inside for so long and it was just a chance to enjoy nature and get out and get sun, be on the beach, take a hike in a park, have a picnic,” she said.What was left was a record amount of trash. Volunteers in Cocoa Beach, Florida, picked up 13,000 pounds in three days.“They said it was more than they’ve ever seen.”And, if you're seeing gloves and personal protective equipment littered everywhere these days, you're not alone."There are ways to dispose of these things that are safe and don’t leave it on the ground for somebody else to pick up.”Lowman reminds us that all that trash eventually ends up in our waterways, which all lead to our oceans.“80% of litter that’s in the ocean started on land, you don’t have to throw something on the beach in order for it to end up in the ocean,” said Lowman.She says there's a good rule of thumb when you're headed out to enjoy public lands. If you pack it in, pack it out. Take home whatever you took with you.“Please take care of our natural spaces, it’s all we’ve got and right now these spaces are more important than they’ve ever been.”As for Paradise Falls, they hope to bring it back someday.“We exist to help people get outside and have the feelings they feel in the outdoors but there’s a time and place for every activity and we’re not set up with facilities to handle large numbers of people for large amounts of time.”It's a reminder to protect our outdoors, so they remain open for us all. 3166

(KGTV) — At a high school football game in Valley Center, emotions spilled off the field at halftime, as a head coach got into an altercation with the grandfather of player.Last week, under the Friday night lights at Valley Center High, the visiting squad from Imperial High made a big play in the second quarter."The other team ran past us for 50 yards. The student just didn't get the tackle, so they got the touchdown," said cheerleader Isela Zepeda.Zepeda says it was clear an assistant coach wasn't happy with the player."I heard that the assistant coach grabbed him, pushed him to the bench and started yelling at him," said Zepeda.Fast forward to halftime near the snack bar, as senior Jennifer Perez was coming out of the bathroom."Heard a lot of yelling. Saw a big crowd," said Zepeda. Witnesess say the grandfather of that player involved in the touchdown confronted the assistant coach. "He started choking him out," said Zepeda.Nearby was longtime head coach Rob Gilster."Heard he punched him to get him off. Then I heard he didn't punch him. Bunch of different stories," said senior Yesenia Zepeda, whose brother witnessed part of the fight.Deputies say bystanders broke up the fight. Sources tell 10News the grandfather suffered broken bones in his eye socket. Deputies took statements, but none of the men wanted to press charges and there wasn't enough evidence to make any arrests.The Valley Center Pauma Unified School District confirmed they've begun an investigation. 10News has learned both coaches were placed on administrative leave. 1588

US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said the United States was prepared to sustain its pressure on Syria after a night of military strikes meant to cripple the country's ability to use chemical weapons, as Russia accused Washington of "hooliganism" and a major breach of international law."The time for talk ended last night," Haley told the UN Security Council. Two students were injured after a gun accidentally discharged at a school in Fulton County, Georgia on Thursday.Police received reports of a loud pop coming from a classroom at Banneker High School just before 3:30 p.m.According to a spokesperson with Fulton County Schools, a bullet hit a female student in the ankle, and also grazed another student. Both students were treated for minor injuries, according to the spokesperson.Officials say officers searched the classroom and found a low-caliber handgun hidden in a box. It's believed the weapon was brought on school property in a book bag by a student, according to the school spokesperson.The spokesperson added that "the investigation into this incident is ongoing and the [Fulton County Schools Police Department] plans to file criminal charges against everyone involved in this incident in accordance with District policy."Three students will face charges in the incident. One student is being charged with one count possession of a weapon and one count of a weapon on campus. Two students are being charged with reckless conduct because of their contact with the weapon.The spokesperson told CBS46 the gun did not belong to the injured students.No bags of any kind are being allowed into the school building on Friday.  1297

TUCSON, AZ - The United States Customs and Border Patrol says several agents were assaulted in two different incidents on Tuesday.Both incidents happened near the border, west of Tucson.In the first incident, agents were attempting to stop a human smuggling operation involving four male suspects. During the arrest attempt, one of the men became combative, according to Border Patrol.The 25-year-old Guatemalan national allegedly threw dirt at an agent’s face and swung a belt with a large buckle on it at an agent. After being taken into custody, the suspect also allegedly spit in an agent’s face.The three other suspects, including two illegal aliens and an Arizona man, were also arrested.In the second incident, Border Patrol says an agent was assaulted while attempting to arrest an illegal alien west of Three Points. The agent and a canine partner tracked the 36-year-old Guatemalan national into a desolate desert area. The man became combative and hit the agent several times, according to Border Patrol. The agent eventually took the man into custody. The suspect involved in the second assault was previously removed from the country in May for immigration violations. One agent was taken to a local hospital for evaluation and has been released.Border Patrol did not indicate which incident that agent was involved in. 1360
