BEIJING, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- Six Chinese infants might have died from consuming melamine-tainted milk powder, the country's Ministry of Health (MOH) said here on Monday.     Experts with the MOH and provincial health departments had looked into 11 infant death cases since September across the country, and had ruled out connection to the tainted milk powder in five cases, the ministry said on its website.     They could not, however, rule out such possibility in the rest six cases, it said.     Four of the six cases occured in Jiangxi, Zhejiang, Guizhou and Shaanxi Provinces respectively, while the rest two cases occurred in the northwestern province of Gansu.     It did not give any further details.     Previous reports said three babies, including two in Gansu Province and one in Zhejiang Province, had already been confirmed by the ministry to have died from consuming the tainted milk from May to August.     The ministry did not make it clear whether the three confirmed cases were included in the six undecided case.     Meanwhile, 861 infants were still receiving treatment for kidney problems caused by tainted milk powder by last Thursday, the ministry said.     The figure dropped by about 200 from the previous week, when the number of hospitalized infants stood at 1,041.     All together 294,000 infants were found to have suffered from diseases of urinary systems in the ministry's nationwide screening, it said.     Among them, 154 had been in serious conditions, but were all stable by Monday. A total of 51,900 children had been hospitalized and 51,039 had recovered and left the hospital.     Most of the sick children were found to have only sand-like stones in their urinary systems.

WUHAN, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter said Wednesday he believes the incoming administration of President-elect Barack Obama will expand common interests of the United States and China.     Carter, 84, flew to central China's Hubei Province after attending a series of events in Beijing to mark the 30th anniversary of China-U.S. diplomatic ties. BEIJING, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- China will adopt a flexible and prudent macro-control policy to keep a stable and rapid economic development in the current fourth quarter, according to the State Council here on Sunday.     Related financial, credit and foreign trade measures will be carried out in the near future in response to the slowing trend of the country's economic growth and the continuous fluctuation in the domestic capital market amid the ongoing global financial crisis, according to a State Council meeting presided over by Premier Wen Jiabao on Sunday.     Agriculture continued to be a priority, with multiple support policies to come following the Communist Party of China Central Committee's decision to strengthen rural development this week.     To boost development of small- and medium-sized enterprises, the government planned to widen their investment channels by further encouraging financial institutions to give out more loans. Companies would also get more fiscal support for technology innovation.     In addition, the country would reinforce national investment in areas such as the southwest quake-zone reconstruction, infrastructure development and social welfare system, among others.     With regard to the foreign trade sector, the State Council, China's Cabinet, decided to increase imports of goods of domestic need and support the country's exports so as to realize the balance of international payments.     "We will further raise the export rebate of labour-intensive products such as garments and textiles, as well as mechanical and electrical products with high-added value," the council said.     In addition, the country's top administrative body would still keep a cautious eye on price increases with a focus on agricultural and energy related goods.     The advent of September's tainted milk scandal had also prompted the central government to pay closer attention to food safety in the fourth quarter. Regulations on dairy product quality and safety, which took effect earlier this month, would be further reinforced, according to the council decision.     While acknowledging the affect of the worldwide economic slowdown on the domestic economy, the Cabinet still expressed confidence for the nation to continue a healthy development.     "Our economy remains vigorous and has the capability to defend itself against international risks," Premier Wen Jiabao said at a State Council meeting on Friday.

BEIJING, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- The Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee held a meeting Friday to study the application of the scientific outlook on development.     The meeting was chaired by the General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee Hu Jintao who is also Chinese President.     In a statement issued after the meeting, the Political Bureau urged all Party members to deepen study and application of the scientific outlook on development to promote economic growth, social stability, and the governance capacity of the CPC.     The top priority of the application of the scientific outlook on development had always been to maintain fast and steady economic development, to adjust the country's industrial structure and to safeguard and improve the livelihood of the Chinese people, the statement said.     However, it noted that China still faced a number of challenges and problems during its social and economic development.     Currently, the spreading global financial crisis and the slowdown of world economic growth had exerted great pressure on business operations of Chinese companies and the country's employment situation, the statement said.     Moreover, the environmental cost for China's economic development was too high, the statement said, adding that the country's industrial structure remained problematic and lacked independent innovation capacity.     It also said China had witnessed increasing difficulty in maintaining steady development of its agricultural sector and in increasing income of its rural residents.     Work safety, food and drug safety, and other issues of vital interest to the Chinese public must also be addressed with stepped-up efforts, it said.     The statement urged all Party members to apply the scientific outlook on development to their work to deal with the global financial crisis and maintain steady economic growth.     Party members should be fully confident while implementing government policies aimed at stimulating domestic demands and promoting economic growth, it said.
