Welcome to the Florida Keys, where there's crystal-clear blue waters, peachy-pink skies, and a party atmosphere fit for Jimmy Buffett. The drinks are flowing, the bands are playing, and if you had a good day, you probably have a fresh catch to filet and throw on the grill. But Captain Jerry Pope says if you dive a little deeper, you will see not everything is as perfect as it seems. “You know, the reef holds bait and it holds a lot of snappers and groupers, ballyhoos, things like that. If our ballyhoo go away, our winter time fishing is going to go to nothing,” said Pope.The keys are home to part of the Florida Reef system, the third largest reef in the world. But the reef is sick, and the tourists that bring this place to life might be part of the problem. Reef coverage, which is the part covered by actual coral instead of other organisms, declined from 33 percent in 1984 to just 6 percent in 2008. Now, the guidebook company Fodor’s included the Florida Keys Reef on its “No List” for 2020. It's an annual list of places Fodor’s recommends you avoid for a variety of reasons. It put the reef there to try to protect it. Sarah Fangman is in charge of making sure the reef doesn’t die. “We’re working really hard to make sure that visitors that do come here enjoy these resources can experience the unique marine ecosystem that we have here, but do so in a way that doesn’t harm it,” said Fangman. Experts say it’s hard to pinpoint exactly what's damaging the reef. Warming waters, sunscreen, chemical imbalance could all be to blame. Also, tourism. “The concern is additional pressures like tourism, like water quality issues, like fishing issues can cause additional challenges,” said Fangman.Divers from several organizations are working to plant new coral and applying a special solution to stop the spread of disease. If the reef does die, it could kill Sam McCroskey’s way of life, too. “We’re going to go out to the inner reef, part of the world's third-largest barrier reef system,” said McCroskey. McCroskey guides scuba divers checking out the reef. He showed us what dying coral looks like. “They talk about how fast the reef is getting destroyed,” said McCroskey. The death of this reef could kill more than the scuba business as well. “The services that these reefs provide, not only in providing habitat providing food, but providing protection are really important to those of us that live here in the Keys. And so, any threat to them, any threat at all is something that we all need to be concerned about,” said Fangman. “If we don’t have the reef out there, that’s so beautiful and that people come to see and come to enjoy, then they’re not going to come. And so this place won’t exist really without our reef,” said Pope. 2777

“I have never in 23 years ran across this!”That's how assistant Bristow, Oklahoma police chief Kendra Raney described what happened in the ladies restroom of Walmart on Tuesday. "A Walmart employee requesting an ambulance for a lady that was inside the women's bathroom either having a miscarriage, or having a baby," Raney said. That 911 call triggered emergency responses from multiple agencies, including police, fire and the Creek County Ambulance service. It sent paramedics racing to help.Raney described what first responders found, stating, "I understand the Walmart employees performed lifesaving measures and when the ambulance got there, they transported them both to a Tulsa Hospital."The Bristow Fire Department report shows it paramedics worked on the baby girl for 17 minutes. They gave her oxygen and cleared her airways. Finally, she took breaths on her own and made a weak cry.Why was the baby was born in the Walmart restroom? "Mom stated that she started having contractions about 2:30 in the morning that morning and she didn't think that they warranted a visit to the hospital," Raney explains. "She got up later, got her kids off to school and felt that she needed to use the restroom, so she stopped at the Walmart which the middle school's right across from the Walmart."Raney says the mother felt some pressure and then the baby came out. We asked how the mother and baby girl are doing now. Then she added, "Both are gonna make it."Raney said, the incident is still under investigation. Bristow police are not releasing the mother's name, or which hospital the mother and baby were taken to in Tulsa. A 5-year-old child suffered life-threatening injuries when, according to witnesses, a man either threw or pushed the child from the third floor of the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota, police said Friday.Bloomington police Chief Jeff Potts told reporters that police were called to the mall at 10:17 a.m. local time, and initial information suggested a child had fallen from the third level of the mall's interior to the first level.Additional information from witnesses indicated the 5-year-old might have been pushed or thrown, Potts said.Police officers gave the child first aid along with witnesses, Potts said."The child did suffer significant injuries," he said. "The child has been transported to the hospital and has been receiving care." 767

A judge has upheld the Virginia governor's ban on all types of weapons at a pro-gun rally planned for next week. Gov. Ralph Northam had announced the ban on Wednesday as he declared a state of emergency over threats of “armed militia groups storming our Capitol." The judge's order Thursday came hours after the FBI announced the arrest of three alleged white supremacists in Maryland. Virginia's solicitor general told Richmond Circuit Court Judge Joi that law enforcement identified "credible evidence" that armed out-of-state groups planned to come to Virginia with the possible intention of participating in a "violent insurrection." The emergency, which was declared by executive order, will span Friday, January 17 at 5:00 p.m. until Tuesday, January 21 at 5:00 p.m.“Law enforcement intelligence analysts have identified credible threats of violence surrounding the event, along with white nationalist rhetoric and plans by out-of-state militia groups to attend,” said a statement from Northam’s office.Northam tweeted that the order was to protect citizens and lawmakers.“We support citizens’ rights to peacefully protest and express their views to their elected officials. But we must also keep the public, as well as those who work around Capitol Square, safe,” the governor tweeted.Northam, a Democrat elected in 2018, now enjoys partisan support from the Virginia House and Senate.
