SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Zoo Safari Park's youngest southern white rhino began integrating with the rest of the park's rhino herd Wednesday, meeting a rhino other than his mother for the first time since his birth 10 weeks ago.Edward and his mother, Victoria, have remained sequestered from the rest of the herd since his birth in July to allow the two to bond and ensure he builds weight and stamina. The calf's weight has nearly quadrupled since then and he has only entered the Safari Park's rhino enclosure with Victoria.Edward met Helene, an adult female southern white rhino, after she sparred with Victoria, who was very protective of her calf, according to the zoo's animal care staff. His birth represents a step toward the zoo's longer-term goal of recovering the northern white rhino, a distant relative of the southern white rhino. Only two northern white rhinos still exist on the planet and both are female.Zoo officials plan to use stem cells and preserved northern white rhino cells to birth a northern white rhino calf within 10-20 years. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A camp in Vista is giving kids a place to cope with the loss of a loved one, along with others on the same journey.Experience Camps provide boys and girls whose parent, sibling or primary caregiver has died, with a program that helps build confidence, encourages laughter and allows them to navigate their grief through friendship, teamwork, athletics, and the common bond of loss.The nonprofit provides the experience free for families. "My mom she was really, really nice. I loved her with all my heart. When she passed, it was devastating," said 13-year-old Dylan from San Diego.Dylan's mother died of breast cancer. "It was really tough, but once I got here it was really good to know that other people had the same experience," said Dylan.This is Dylan's third year at camp. He and others are gaining coping mechanisms to navigate their grief better. "The common experience we all have is grief, and I think that's the strongest bond between all of us," said Amit Sura, a camp counselor. A typical camp day includes two activity periods, such as volleyball, tennis or arts & crafts. The third morning period is focused on different techniques in the bereavement toolkit, built to help the campers identify, express, and understand their feelings. Later in the day campers take part in a camp-wide activity, such as relay races or a hike up a nearby mountain. The camp comes together again during free swim, dinner, and an evening activity before retiring to their bunks."Today we did a mindfulness activity, talked about sitting with emotions like anger, happiness, sadness," said Sura. The Missiongathering Church in North Park was shut down this week after more than two dozen violations were handed to them by the city. In addition to being a shelter, the church also rents out the property as a music and sanctuary venue called “The Irenic.”The City of San Diego says the church never received clearance to do that. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A family wants the Governor of California to keep the man who murdered three San Diego State professors behind bars. Frederick Davidson was sent to prison in 1997 for three consecutive life sentences without parole after he gunned down his three engineering professors Chen Liang, Preston Lowry, and Constantinos Lyrintzis.The San Diego County District Attorney’s Office recently notified the victims’ families that Davidson applied for executive clemency.“Just asking for clemency?  Out of what?  On what grounds?” asked a distraught Esther Alonso, Lyrintzis’ sister-in-law.  Lyrintzis was married to her sister, Deana Alonso, and the couple had a young daughter.A District Attorney’s Office spokesman said the DA’s office already filed a letter opposing Davidson’s request.Alonso told 10News she could not believe Davidson would request clemency.  Alonso said the family agreed to not seek the death penalty in 1997 if Davidson agreed to plead guilty and go to prison for life without parole.“How can they tell them 20 years later that the deaths of their husbands and their fathers…that this guy has more rights than they do?” asked Alonso, a professor at Southwestern College. “I don’t understand a system where that is even possible.”Alonso created a Change.org petition directed at Governor Jerry Brown asking him to deny Davidson’s request.The DA’s spokesman said their office opposed more than 50 clemency requests last year and none of those requests were granted.  The spokesman added there is no deadline for Governor Brown to respond or send it to a hearing. 1627

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A five-week-old sea otter found stranded by strong currents in Alaska is now being cared for by SeaWorld San Diego.SeaWorld announced the sea otter pup, Cinder, was found orphaned near Homer, Alaska, on Aug. 18 before being brought to their care last Saturday. Cinder was underweight and dehydrated when she was taken to the Alaska SeaLife Center in Seaward, Alaska.But the young otter pup learned quickly to feed from a bottle and stabilized before making the trip to San Diego.Since the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has deemed her non-releasable, SeaWorld's Animal Rescue Team and veterinarians have provided constant care in the park's sea otter nursery.SeaWorld says Cinder's condition is good and she's adjusting well to her new home. Staff are also acting as a sort of surrogate mother, helping Cinder learn to swim and groom herself.For the time being, the sea otter will remain in the park's nursery. But soon, she'll be introduced to the park's four other female sea otters — which are also rescued orphaned pups.The park hopes to be able to introduce Cinder to park visitors in the near future. 1133
