SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Black Friday is the official kick off to the holiday shopping season and with more shoppers purchasing packages, more thieves are looking to make a grab.San Diego Sheriff's deputies issued tips on Black Friday for consumers hoping to keep their new gifts safe this season.First, they advise that shoppers avoid leaving anything a thief would want visible in cars. That includes:PurseWalletMailPresentsBagsPackagesElectronics (i.e. iPad, iPhone, tablet, laptop, music player)A thief could get an address from shoppers via their car — using a driver's license, insurance registration card, or mail — and in turn try and burglarize a home for those recently-bought presents."The biggest mistake is them being on their phones, and not slowing down, taking the time to lock your cars, roll up your windows. Please make sure that any packages that you buy, you remove from your back seat, put them in the trunk, lock them, secure them," Sergeant Pamela Murphy said. She also wants shoppers to be mindful when they leave the store, especially at night, "don't have too many things in your arms that you can't carry or defend yourself."RELATED: San Diegans brave the pouring rain to score Black Friday dealsIf someone becomes a victim of a crime, deputies don't recommend posting about it on social media. Instead, call local law enforcement. The department does not monitor social media for potential crimes.Reporting a crime helps law enforcement track trends, which makes a difference in communities. "If there's trends we need to go out and make sure there's extra patrol and make sure our deputies are checking the area more often as well as the senior volunteers," Murphy said.RELATED: Black Friday strategies that actually workDuring the holidays the department has more frequent patrols, and puts up Sky Towers in mall parking lots, giving deputies an edge while surveying parking lots. 1913

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Californians trying to raise happy and healthy families are finding affordability a challenge, a study shows. WalletHub ranked states based on feedback from psychology, social work and child studies experts at several universities, and statistics from each region. States were given grades in categories including the cost of housing, child care, and unemployment. California ranked 19th overall. The individual category rankings are as follows: 5th: Percent of families with young kids5th: Infant mortality rate15th: Separation and divorce rate34th: Percent of families in poverty36th: Violent crime rate38th: Unemployment rate46th: Child care costs49th: Median family salary (adjusted for cost of living)50th: Housing affordability Minnesota, Massachusetts and North Dakota filled the top three spots for family-friendly states. The worst states for families were New Mexico, Mississippi and Louisiana. Housing prices, a problem for western states, were at their best levels in the Midwest. Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, North Dakota and Ohio topped the list. California's median home price as of November 2018 was 7,900, Zillow reported. The median rent price in California was ,750.Each state’s affordability was based in part on median mortgage debt, credit score, housing costs, share of people who save money for their child’s education, and annual family health insurance premium. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Chronic pain, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and anxiety are just some of the conditions veterans carry with them long after serving our country. Now many are finding relief at a free acupuncture clinic offered at the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine (PCOM)."I had patients who would come to me and say, no you don't understand, I got off all my pain medication," said Christine Cronin, a full-time faculty member at PCOM.A Marine Corps veteran herself, Cronin started the Veterans Clinic in 2013."I focused my doctoral research on the treatment of combat stress-induced insomnia, and I had a lot of research that supported that we were going to have a lot of service members who were going to have a series of comorbid conditions, they were going to have a lot of different things that they were going to be working through. And they were all things acupuncture was good at," said Cronin. Students who've received over 2,000 hours of training help treat veterans at the clinic. Acupuncture helps regulates the body, promoting a natural self-healing process."Really listen to your patient and really figure out what is at stake for them, and what is going to help them lead the kind of life they want to lead," said Cronin. The clinic is open to past and present service members, as well as their family members.Veterans Clinic:Wednesday nights, 5:30 - 9:30 (veterans asked to arrive before 8 p.m.)7445 Mission Valley Rd, San Diego, CA 92108Bring military ID or proof of service affiliation 1526

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — County health officials say they are taking aggressive measures to contain a flu outbreak at San Diego's migrant shelter. At least 16 migrants have shown flu-like symptoms; all were recently flown to San Diego from Texas by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Immigration and Customs Enforcement.Three migrants tested positive with a rapid influenza test."In order to take steps to prevent the spread of the disease we've become more aggressive in treating everyone with symptoms, regardless of when those symptoms started," said Dr. Dean Sidelinger, Deputy Public Health Officer for the County.RELATED: Flu outbreak sickens over 30 migrants at border centerBefore being admitted to the shelter, migrants undergo medical screenings.Migrants with flu-like symptoms are being isolated off-site in hotel rooms, along with their family members who are receiving preventative medicine. On Thursday, County Supervisors Dianne Jacob and Nathan Fletcher expressed their continued frustration with the federal government's handling of the migrant crisis. "Had we not taken these steps these migrant families would have been released by ICE at bus stops or transit centers without the medical screenings, without the treatment, without the attention, and without the help and support that we have provided. This could have proved disastrous for our region," said Fletcher. Fletcher says while they don't know how many people may develop flu-like symptoms in the days and weeks ahead, they are actively monitoring the population. Jacob says they are expecting more planes of migrants, possibly three planes a week. 1637
