Commercial real estate leader Steve Schwab is looking to sign tenants to leases at a new development in downtown Denver but he’s running into troubles linked to the pandemic.“COVID has a had a major effect, probably the most major effect in the sales business,” he said.Schwab, a managing principal at Cushman & Wakefield, says COVID-19 has had a major impact on commercial real estate in a short amount of time.“Between the first quarter and the second quarter, we saw office investments sales decrease by about 72%,” he said.Schwab says unemployment, more people working from home and social distancing are impacting commercial real estate sectors like shopping centers, hotels, retail and office spaces.He says that the road to recovery will be very challenging, something other industry experts agree with.“The restaurants, the gyms, the bowling alleys, those are going to struggle over the next 12-18 months until we get back to full physical occupancy,” said Spencer Levy, chairman at CBRE.Levy says high inventory combined with low interest rates could attract foreign investors to American commercial real estate, something he welcomes with open arms.“Foreign money isn’t just cash. It brings everything with it. It brings jobs, it brings foreign students, it brings people that buy retail,” he said.But will foreign investment bring more people back inside massive buildings?Levy compares what today's commercial real estate industry needs to rebound to that of 9/11.“We had a period of time where people were tragically afraid to be back in the cities, afraid to go back into tall buildings. But that passed after people had better security in those buildings,” he said. “We are going to see exactly the same thing today from a wellness prospective.”With many major retailers already moving out of brick and mortar buildings, and millions of square feet available across the country, Levy says the commercial real estate industry needs more government assistance on the road to recovery. 2005

CINCINNATI — Jonathan Frierson of Lincoln Heights, Ohio says he's honored to have known Sen. John McCain personally as his bus driver.“Driving the 'Straight Talk Express Coach' for Senator McCain,” Frierson told WCPO. “Got started in 2000. I was a backup driver.”  By February 2008, though, when McCain was running for president and made a campaign stop for a rally at Memorial Hall, Frierson was behind the wheel and standing beside the door when McCain got off the bus.McCain had called him in 2007 to take over, Frierson said.Frierson said he liked that McCain called him by his nickname.“He always called me 'Fry,' ” Frierson said.Frierson flipped through a scrapbook and saw himself in several photos and newspaper articles with McCain, who died Saturday after a long fight with brain cancer.“Felt honored," Frierson said. One picture in a newspaper clipping from Aug. 29, 2008 showed McCain and Frierson sitting side by side at a Skyline Chili. Considered the coronavirus holy grail, antibodies are believed to give us some level of immunity from the virus. They form after a person fights off COVID-19 and can be detected through a serological test, better known as an antibody test. "There are some really great companies building antibody tests, and there are some not so great, bad actors, building antibody tests. So you have to be really careful," says Jon Carder, co-founder and CEO of Vessel, a San Diego company created four years ago to provide in-home wellness tests. Early in the pandemic, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration allowed these tests to be sold and distributed without federal review, as long as the company notified the FDA it was offering a test, performed self-validation studies, and included a disclaimer on the test results. The FDA is now cracking down on the bad actors, creating a list of tests that should no longer be distributed. Only a handful of manufacturers have been granted FDA Emergency Use Authorization, meeting a certain threshold for accuracy.Carder says states and even countries have been fooled by the bad actors, purchasing inadequate tests. "We were talking to a city government, a big city, and were blown away when we got a response that they were thinking about buying antibody tests from a certain manufacture who had claimed they were FDA approved. And the state had sort of taken their word for it, and they weren't," said Carder. Vessel had been preparing to release its in-home wellness tracker, which tests for health markers like vitamins, minerals, toxins, and cortisol. When the pandemic hit, the company adapted its technology to be used in the fight against COVID-19. "We take existing antibody tests, the good ones, the ones that are accurate and that the FDA has approved for emergency use, and we enable those to be done safely and accurately at home," said Carder. They've created a kit with step-by-step instructions to do the blood test at home. The test card is then scanned through the Vessel app and provides results from a medical professional within a half-hour. The FDA has already approved in-home tests to diagnose active infections – but Carder says the sample must be sent to a lab, and the user must have symptoms or another qualification to get one. And he says they can be costly. "Ours could be one of the first, or the first, antibody test done at home, no lab needed," said Carder. Just this week, the FDA issued three warning letters to companies making false claims on their in-home antibody tests.Vessel has completed its usability studies and is now in clinical trials with the FDA. "Our job is to prove it can be done safely at home and to show that via clinical trials. The FDA really makes the call if they're going to enable antibody testing at home," said Carder. He says the test would be cost-effective, anywhere from -, or around with medical consultation. If approved by the FDA, Carder estimates millions of people could be tested within the first few months. "There's something really great about the peace-of-mind that comes from doing a test, and that may be one of the biggest benefits," said Carder. But while the FDA is only approving the most accurate tests, none are 100 percent accurate and could still lead to false positives. 3314

CINCINNATI -- While their fellow incoming college students enjoyed Freshman Welcome Week, Natalie Vasu and Kiley Hatfield spent much of their first week at the University of Cincinnati sitting inside at Turner Schneider Hall. Their new dorm room had a broken shower head, broken locks and a thermostat on the fritz, and at least one person needed to be around to greet the repair teams who came to fix them.Those issues were irritating but all had quick solutions, Vasu said. The mold they discovered near four outlets in the room didn't."There were water dripping stains down the outlet," Vasu said. "We're lucky when we went and plugged things in that nothing caught fire or went wrong."The university immediately removed the girls -- Vasu, Hatfield and their two roommates -- from their room and offered them new rooms. Separate ones. Hatfield said she and Vasu were determined to stay together, and after hours of begging, the university agreed to put them up in a hotel as a pair. It's still a short-term fix. The girls don't know what their long-term living situation might be."We don't have a permanent option," Hatfield said. "We have no idea where we're supposed to go."M.B. Reilly, the university's director of public relations, said staff have worked to quickly address all of the issues Hatfield and Vasu raised. The malfunctioning thermostat was replaced within days; the broken shower head was replaced the same Saturday morning they reported it.They will continue to work with the pair to find an acceptable place for them to live."In support of our students, university staff will personally be reviewing alternative UC housing options with them and their parents shortly," Reilly said in a statement.She added no other students in their building had experienced comparable issues. 1820
