SHANGHAI, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) - Swiss President Doris Leuthard Thursday said the rise in bilateral trade between Switzerland and China is a delightful surprise, as she seeks to expand economic cooperation with China through a free trade agreement.The trade increase was a surprise as it came during the economic crisis last year, Leuthard said.In the first six months of 2010, Swiss exports to China increased more than 30 percent and Chinese exports to Switzerland increased more than 16 percent.Total trade volume between the two countries during the period hit 6.2 billion Swiss Francs (5.86 billion U.S. dollars), she added.Leuthard said she is optimistic about the future of Sino-Swiss bilateral trade, as the two countries are working on a free trade agreement."We are ending feasibility study (for the agreement) so both sides know the market, the opportunities and the risks very well. It is very promising," she said.After the joint feasibility study, the two sides will enter the final stage ahead of the signing of the deal, she added.Talks on the free trade agreement began in 2007 when Leuthard, as head of the Federal Department of Economic Affairs, signed an agreement with then-Minister of Commerce Bo Xilai. The agreement recognized the full market status of China.Switzerland hopes to be the first European country to have a free trade agreement with China, Leuthard told Xinhua in an interview last year.China is Switzerland's second largest trade partner in Asia after Japan.

CHANGZHOU, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang on Saturday called for more favorable policies to encourage the construction of affordable housing.Li made the remarks at a meeting on affordable housing held in Changzhou city of east China's Jiangsu Province.He reiterated that China would complete construction of 5.8 million units of affordable housing, including low-rent housing, public rental housing and resettlement housing for relocated residents from redeveloped urban shanty towns.In May, the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development signed an agreement with local governments nationwide to build 5.8 million units of affordable housing."Meanwhile, measures should be taken to increase the supply of commercial housing to meet people's reasonable needs of housing consumption," he said.He said local governments should adopt a realistic approach to affordable housing construction and plans should be based upon local needs.For populous cities, construction should focus on public rental housing that provides homes for low- and medium-income families, newly-employed school graduates and migrant workers, he said.

QINGDAO, Aug.19 (Xinhua) - China's largest marine patrol departed Thursday from Qingdao to Vladivostok, a coastal city in east Russia, participating in a multilateral joint drill.The joint drill is to be held from Aug.22 to 27, with the theme of "enforcing emergency responses to illegal actions threatening joint marine security".The North Pacific Coast Guard Agencies Forum (NPCGF) promoted the multilateral joint drill in 2009.Current members of NPCGF, Canada, China, Japan, South Korea, Russia and the United States, participate in the drill."The joint drill mainly focuses on arms trafficking and illegal migration, including searching, boarding and examining suspicious ships," said Wu Shaojun, captain of Marine Patrol 11.Chinese Marine Patrol 11, Marine Surveillance 83 and helicopters and ships from other countries will participate in the joint drill, said Wu.Chinese Marine Surveillance 83 left for Russia on Aug.13 from Guangzhou, capital city of south China's Guangdong Province.NPCGF, initiated by the Japan Coast Guard in 2000, is an organization devoted to fostering multilateral cooperation on illegal drug trafficking, maritime security, fisheries enforcement, illegal migration and heightened maritime awareness.Member states take turns hosting the annual forum. BEIJING, July 27 (Xinhua) -- China's largest gold producer said on Tuesday its operating profits rose by three fold to 1.55 billion yuan (228.09 million U.S. dollars) in the first six months this year.China National Gold Group Corp. said in a statement that its first-half revenue grew by 98 percent from a year earlier to 27.67 billion yuan and expected its full-year revenue to reach 50 billion yuan.At the end of June, the gold producer had 1,250 tonnes of gold reserves, eight million tonnes of copper reserves and 1.6 million tonnes of molybdenum, according to the statement.In the first half of 2010, the company added a total of 24.7 tonnes of gold, 683,000 tonnes of copper and 445,000 tonnes of molybdenum to its reserves, said the statement.The company had improved its development strategies through conducting merge and acquisitions, integrating regional resources and exploring overseas, said Sun Zhaoxue, general manager of the gold producer.
