A Pennsylvania woman is mourning the loss of her 12-year-old after claiming that the dog was mauled last week by another dog during a grooming appointment at a PetSmart, WNEP-TV reported. Betty Miller of Scranton told WNEP that after dropping off her dog named Bichon Brewster at PetSmart's grooming salon, she got a call from a veterinarian, who delivered the awful news. Brewster was killed after getting attacked by another dog.After the mauling, Brewster was taken to the Veterinary Referral and Emergency Center, but was dead on arrival. The veterinarians told WNEP that it attempted resuscitation, but failed. Now, Miller is wanting answers as to why this happened. "We called corporate," Miller told WNEP. "They did not reach out to us, and I was very angry about that. Why would you want to bring a pit bull past a small dog who's really just bait? A Pinckney, Mich. woman is recovering after she was bitten by a rattlesnake while walking in her yard.Laura Bowen says she was cleaning out her garage, carrying some rakes down a walkway between her home and garage. That's when she says she didn't see the rattlesnake on the ground in front of a garage door, but almost immediately felt a burning pain in her leg when it bit her."It was like a bee sting times 10," Bowen said of the bite. "It was instant fry." Bowen is slowly recovering from the incident, which happened noon on Aug. 20."Just kept telling myself don’t over react because it’s just probably a garden snake or something," she said. "I took a couple shutter steps and looked back and it was a huge snake."The bite happened so fast, and the excruciating pain was almost instant."It was like acid, burn, pain," Bowen said.She says she took a picture of the snake after the bite. Emergency responders immediately recognized it as an Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnake."That was the best thing that I did was to take that photo so they could identify it and know what they were treating," she said.Bowen spent four days in the hospital and received 10 vials of anti-venom. She still plays that day in her head over and over again, and is thankful everything is going to be ok."I think I’m going to buy some garden boots, the rubber ones that are clunky," Bowen said. "Definitely re-thinking my garden attire."She's currently using a cane to help her get around, and should be able to walk on her own again within a week.Bowen has two more doctors appointments just to make sure everything is healing well. 1700

A report from the Department of Veterans' Affairs inspector general found that the Washington DC VA Medical Center has for years "suffered a series of systemic and programmatic failures to consistently deliver timely and quality patient care," and heightening the potential for waste, fraud and abuse of government resources.The report released Wednesday found that the main health care facility for veterans in Washington lacked consistently clean areas for medical supplies, had staffing issues across multiple departments and that approximately million in supplies and equipment were purchased over a two-year period without "proper controls to ensure the purchases were necessary and cost-effective."According to the report, VA Secretary David Shulkin said he "does not recall senior leaders' bringing issues at the medical system related to supplies, instruments and equipment to his attention" while he was the undersecretary of health.The VA has been rocked by the IG report and Shulkin's belief that Trump administration political appointees, including a top aide, have been working toward his ouster.The report did not find any patient harm, but VA Inspector General Michael Missal said that was "largely due to the efforts of many dedicated health care providers that overcame service deficiencies to ensure patients received needed care."In the report detailing the troubling conditions at the VA hospital, Missal faults "failed leadership at multiple levels within VA that put patients and assets ... at unnecessary risk." The report follows an interim report released in April 2017, which Missal took the rare step of issuing because he had a "lack of confidence" in the Veterans Health Administration to properly deal with the issues, some of which they had known about for some time.The report made 40 recommendations, all of which the Department of Veterans Affairs said it accepts.
