SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Three San Diego County sheriff's deputies were justified in fatally shooting an Alpine man who charged at them with a knife in his hand last fall, according to a report released Wednesday by the District Attorney's Office.Daniel Ayala, 31, was shot 10 times outside his apartment in the 2600 block of Alpine Boulevard last Nov. 12.Sgt. Chris Katra, Cpl. His 5-year-old son was inside the apartment during the entire encounter, but was physically unharmed, according to the district attorney.Toxicology results showed Ayala had methamphetamine, heroin, cannabis and alcohol in his system.Stephan's letter concludes that the deputies ``were in a confined space when Ayala advanced on them quickly with a knife in his hand.'' SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 26-year-old was hospitalized late Saturday night after being struck by an SUV while riding his motorcycle.Police say the man was crossing an intersection at 5th Avenue and Ash Street around 9:41 when 82-year-old Herbert Green ran a red light and hit the 26-year-old.The rider flew off the bike when police say he hit a parked car with his head. He was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Officers were able to catch up to and arrest Green several blocks away from the scene of the crash. 545

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two former members of an Imperial County church that federal prosecutors allege was embroiled in a labor trafficking scheme in which church members forced homeless people to surrender their welfare benefits and panhandle for the church, pleaded guilty to labor trafficking and benefits fraud Thursday in San Diego federal court.Jose Gaytan, 47, and Sonia Murillo, 51, both of El Centro, admitted to assisting in the scheme to recruit homeless people in San Diego and other cities, then force them to participate in raising money on behalf of Imperial Valley Ministries, a non-denominational church headquartered in El Centro, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.Prosecutors say former church pastor Victor Gonzalez ordered his members to prevent victims from leaving church properties, including by screwing or nailing windows shut and keeping doors locked from the inside at homes the church operated. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Hillcrest man in search of his stolen bikes made a startling discovery when he stepped into an abandoned church.Early Wednesday morning, surveillance video shows two men stealing three pricey bikes after cutting a metal lock for a garage, as Wilbur Kookmyer slept inside his condo on Georgia Street."Felt angry, felt violated," said Kookmyer.A day later, Kookmyer went in search of his bikes and he didn't go far. Next door - inside an abandoned church at Park Boulevard and Meade Avenue - a security guard agreed to let him have a look.Room after room, he found belongings left behind: clothes, food, and even a drone. In one room is a makeshift bed. There is a bike in another, but it's not his."It's a homeless hotel. They come and go as they please. Free of charge," said Kookmyer.But mostly, what Kookmyer sees is filth."Smells like urine and feces. Needles and trash. It's just disgusting. Looks like a landfill and a health hazard," said Kookmyer.The church was sold last year to a developer. LMC North Park Holdings is still awaiting permits to demolish the site. In the meantime, it's become a campground for transients."Constantly coming and going. Get everything boarded up, but breaking back in every time," said Kookmyer.While Kookmyer was recording, they ran into several people, who were escorted off the property. Kookmeyer says since the church was sold, he's seen a spike in crime - from vandalism to home and car break-ins."My next-door neighbor caught someone breaking in and using his shower," said Kookmyer.Wilbur says it's time for the demolition to happen and for security to be stepped up. "There's no excuse for it being this filthy and creating that much trouble for people around the church," said Kookmyer.A spokesperson for LMC North Park Holdings issued this statement:“We share the concerns of the neighbors and are working diligently to better secure the site until we are able to obtain the permits necessary to begin demolition. The security team, which is contracted to be on site 24/7, is having some difficulty, so we are in the process of obtaining additional resources to better control access. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - 36 students reportedly felt sick at a Bay Terraces elementary school due to possible construction-related fumes, according to the San Diego Fire Department.San Diego Fire-Rescue crews responded to Zamorano Fine Arts Academy around 10:30 a.m. following the reports of students feeling ill. Crews said the kids complained of not feeling well and were being held in the school's cafeteria.An ambulance brought one child to a nearby hospital, SDFD said. Around 11:45 a.m. SDFD began releasing students who were being held in the cafeteria. A nearby construction site was in the process of pouring resin when the smell caused some children to start feeling sick, according to San Diego Unified School District. The resin is non-toxic, but fire crews were called to check out the students. 835
