WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz is under self-quarantine after coming in contact with a person at a conference who tested positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus. The Florida congressman’s team made the announcement on Twitter Monday, 11 days after coming in contact with the infected person at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC). WINNEBAGO COUNTY, Wis. -- A man walked from an Indianapolis suburb to Wisconsin -- a 351-mile journey -- to have sex with a person he believed was the 14-year-old girl he had been talking to on Facebook, prosecutors said.Instead, 32-year-old Tommy Lee Jenkins had been talking to a Winnebago County Sheriff's deputy working with the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, a statement from the US Attorney's Office in the Eastern District of Wisconsin said.He is charged with using a computer to attempt to persuade, induce or entice a minor to engage in unlawful sexual activity, the office said, and faces 10 years to life in prison if convicted.CNN has reached out to Jenkins' attorney, a federal defender, and has not received a response."Our nation faces an epidemic of child sexual abuse, with the Internet making it too easy for predators to communicate with children across the country," United States Attorney Matthew D. Krueger said in a statement. "The Justice Department is committed to working with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies to prosecute child sexual abuse aggressively."The law enforcement officer was posing as a girl named "Kylee" who lived in Neenah, Wisconsin, with her mother, the attorney's office said.Jenkins accepted a friend request from Kylee's profile and soon began engaging in sexual conversations with her, asking her if she's had sex and requesting explicit pictures, a criminal complaint alleges. In early October, Jenkins began asking the girl if she wanted him to come to Wisconsin. When she said yes, he later told her he had begun walking from Whitestown, Indiana, to where she was."I will tell you when i get to neenah 108 hours by walking," he said, according to the complaint.Throughout his journey, Jenkins sent pictures of areas he passed, including photos of exit signs and selfies, the complaint said.On October 10, he said he had made it to the state and that someone had bought him a bus ticket to get to the girl's town.Authorities arrested Jenkins when he arrived, the attorney's office said.Jenkins is scheduled to appear in federal court on October 23. 2141

WASHINGTON, D.C. — He’s a 250-pound four-year-old, heading for his homeland. For more than a week now, crowds have gathered at the National Zoo in Washington, D.C., to say bye-bye to Bei Bei.“He's captured our hearts for over four years and we want to say thank you for all the joy, smiles, happiness, laughter he's given us,” said Gena Kim, who flew in all the way from Los Angeles to see Bei Bei one last time.Bei Bei — a name that means “precious treasure” in Mandarin Chinese — embarked on a 16-hour flight back to China on Tuesday. It is part of an agreement between the zoo and the Chinese government. It’s something the panda keepers knew would happen one day, but still find tough to face.“There's the very professional side of me that's known from the moment he was born, per the loan agreement, that he has to return to China,” said National Zoo panda keeper Marty Dearie. “But the personal side of me, I know he's one of my favorite animals I've ever worked with.”Pandas in zoos around the world are — for all intents and purposes — on loan from China. The agreement between the National Zoo and China is part of a conservation program designed to save the giant panda, listed as "vulnerable" in the wild by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The pandas are sent back to China to be reintroduced to the wild. In Washington, Bei Bei’s parents will stay for now. Their agreements are up next year.“They are on loan with us through December of next year, at which point there will be a renegotiation about what we're doing with those guys,” Dearie said.Other than the National Zoo, only two others in the U.S. have pandas: Atlanta and Memphis. The San Diego zoo’s pandas had to be returned to China in April when their agreement was not renewed by the Chinese government. Zoo officials there said the contract was up and the panda’s return had nothing to do with U.S.-China tensions over trade and tariffs.Back in the nation’s capital, panda fans hope Bei Bei’s parents, Mei Xiang and Tian Tian, get to stay in D.C. for years to come.“We're so attached to Mei Xiang and Tian Tian,” Kim said. “We really wish that they can stay longer here in Washington, D.C. because they're the power couple in D.C.”They are a power couple in a town that can, at times, be panda-monium. 2311

WASHINGTON — The U.S. added 2.5 million jobs in May as the unemployment rate fell slightly to 13.5%.The new report indicates that the economy is recovering from the coronavirus pandemic faster than previously thought. The monthly unemployment report for April painted a bleak picture of the economic devastation wrought by COVID-19 — the unemployment rate jumped up to 14.7 percent, a jump of more than 10 percentage points. The report also suggested that more than 20 million jobs had been wiped away from the economy. But Friday's report painted an encouraging sign that businesses are quickly re-hiring workers as states gradually lift coronavirus-related lockdown restrictions. While some states are moving faster than others, every state has moved forward in lifting at least some lockdown restrictions.During a press conference at the White House Friday, President Donald Trump took credit for the newest report, claiming the economy's strength prior to the pandemic allowed for a quick bounce-back. 1015
