WASHINGTON — Retiring U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander, R-Tennessee, gave his farewell address from the Senate floor Wednesday morning, urging for a "change of behavior."Alexander is retiring after more than 40 years in public service. During his farewell remarks, he called for bipartisanship among what has been a deeply divided Senate over the past decade."Divided government offers an opportunity to share the responsibility — or the blame — for hard decisions," Alexander said. "That's why our country needs a United States Senate, to thoughtfully, carefully and intentionally put country before partisanship and personal politics, to force broad agreements on controversial issues that become laws most of us have voted for and that a diverse country will accept."Alexander also offered a defense of the filibuster, the parliamentary rule that allows a minority party to block legislation. He says the rule forces the Senate to work together to solve problems as opposed to allowing one party to dominate the chamber.Some progressive Democrats have floated eliminating the filibuster in the hopes of passing more legislation.Alexander's career began in 1978 when he famously walked more than 1,000 miles across Tennessee to make his case to be governor. He served two terms as the state governor and later took the helm at the University of Tennessee. He also served as President George H.W. Bush's Secretary of Education.Alexander has served as a senator since 2002. VISTA (CNS) - A man who detained two juveniles and took their skateboards in Vista while posing as a sheriff's deputy pleaded guilty Monday to a charge of felony false imprisonment and in a separate case admitted calling in a false report of a bomb threat.Abraham Joseph Nava, 24, will receive credit for jail time served and be placed on three years probation when he is formally sentenced Aug. 27.Nava was arrested June 14, days after the sheriff's department was contacted about a suspect claiming to be an undercover deputy and launched an investigation.During interviews with several employees from businesses in the Main Street area of Vista, investigators learned that the suspect had passed out fake business cards and was interacting with juveniles, said sheriff's Sgt. Jason Scroggins.Investigators also learned that two juveniles were detained by the suspect and had their skateboards taken, he said.After identifying Nava as the suspect, investigators got a warrant to search his home and discovered several pieces of San Diego County Sheriff's Department-specific uniform items, including badges, Scroggins said.A box of fraudulent sheriff's department business cards were also found, according to the sergeant. On June 26, prosecutors charged Nava with calling in a false report of a bomb threat. 1323

VISTA (CNS) - A former speech therapist at Rancho Buena Vista High School, who allegedly threatened co-workers while working at the northern San Diego County campus, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges of burglary, making criminal threats and vandalism.Arturo Avina, 33, was taken into custody by a SWAT team last Friday morning in connection with a series of menacing messages he allegedly sent to co-workers. The victims began receiving the messages last month, according to sheriff's Sgt. Shane Watts.Authorities released no details on the nature of the purported threats and did not specify the number of alleged victims. WASHINGTON (AP) — A statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee that represented Virginia in the U.S. Capitol has been removed.Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam said in a statement that workers removed the statue from the National Statuary Hall Collection early Monday.“The Confederacy is a symbol of Virginia’s racist and divisive history, and it is past time we tell our story with images of perseverance, diversity, and inclusion,” said Northam.Each state is entitled to display two statues in the collection. Lee’s statue had stood with George Washington’s statue since 1909 as Virginia’s representatives in the Capitol.The Lee statue had been one among 13 located in the Crypt of the Capitol, representing the 13 original colonies.Northam had requested its removal and a state commission has recommended replacing Lee’s statue with a likeness of Barbara Johns.Johns was an American civil rights leader who protested poor conditions at her all-Black high school in the town of Farmville in 1951. Her court case became part of a landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision that struck down racial segregation in public schools.Virginia’s General Assembly must approve the replacement before a sculptor can be commissioned for the new statue.
