SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It's already been one year since the San Diego Zoo Safari Park saw the first southern white rhino born through artificial insemination arrive at its park.Edward turned one-year-old on July 28, celebrating with a party at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park’s Nikita Kahn Rhino Rescue Center with his mother Victoria, 8-month-old female calf Future, and her mother Amani."Even though he doesn’t know it’s his birthday, it is very special to see Edward – a healthy, robust rhino - running around, enjoying his special treats," said Barbara Durrant, director of Reproductive Sciences at San Diego Zoo Global. "We aren’t just celebrating his birthday but also are celebrating the significance of his birth."Edward was born last year after hormone-induced ovulation and artificial insemination with frozen semen from southern white rhino Maoto on March 22, 2018. Victoria gave birth 16 months later. Edward's birth was the zoo's first successful attempt to birth a southern white rhino via artificial insemination and a critical step toward recovering its distant cousin, the northern white rhino. Currently, only two northern white rhinos exist in the world and both are female.Researchers believe that a northern white rhino calf could be born from artificial insemination within 10 to 20 years. 1313

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Images of burning homes, helicopters and flames are now a regular occurrence in California.This summer, that wildfire threat became real for the Del Cerro community.“We could hear the exploding palm trees, we could smell the toxic, frightening smoke," remembers Glenn Thomas, Vice Chair of Friends of Del Cerro.The group wanted to do something to pay back firefighters for all they do for the community. They wanted to know what the department needs to help firefighters do their job better. “We believe you find out what people want and you give it to them!” said Thomas.Friends of Del Cerro teamed up with the San Diego Fire Rescue Foundation to make something happen.What the department needs, Thomas learned, is more wildland firefighting hand tools. While these tools are currently on brush trucks, the department wants them on every engine.“There are so many more vegetation fires, and they grow so much bigger now," said Deputy Chief Steve Wright. “Something we needed that’s going to be a force-multiplier on vegetation fires that we didn’t have the immediate budget for."The group plans to raise ,000 for the tools and is halfway there thanks to a generous donation from the Padres.If you'd like to help, donate here. 1261

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Just days before masses of people are expected to descend on Del Mar for the San Diego County Fair, a busy road has reopened following a bluff collapse. City crews completed a retaining wall and reopened Jimmy Durante Boulevard Wednesday afternoon. The road wasn't originally expected to reopen until June 4, several days after the fair opens on May 31. The cost of cleanup and stabilizing the cliff is expected to cost million. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Looking for a summer job? The City of San Diego is hoping to fill 46 positions at city pools. According to the city, all 46 lifeguard and pool management positions are available at 13 different facilities. Anyone interested has to attend an initial tryout to assess basic swimming skills and qualify to enroll in the city’s lifeguard training program. RELATED: State offers money to help boost college savings accounts Tryouts are being held Tuesday, March 19 and Thursday, March 21, 2019, at the Tierrasanta Pool from 5 – 7 p.m. and Tuesday, March 26, 2019 at Vista Terrace Pool in San Ysidro from 9 – 10 a.m.Those who pass will need to attend a week-long lifeguard training program. The course teaches safety, first aid and lifesaving procedures. The program costs 1 and scholarships are available, the city says. Participants who graduate the program will receive American Red Cross Lifeguard Training and Title 22 First Air certifications and will qualify to work as a lifeguard at city pools.
