SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The record-breaking heat and drought are forcing animals, including coyotes, out of their natural habitats and closer to humans.Krystal Ruiz lost her two dogs, Millie and Pepe, to coyotes last week.“It's sad; it's very sad. I'm just lost for words. I don't know,” said Ruiz.Her friends and neighbors aren’t surprised.RELATED: Escondido man attacked by coyote“They have said they've seen coyotes wandering around. I'm also on the nextdoor app, and they said they've seen coyotes or a friend has seen coyotes snatch a dog and kill it.”Early August is also pupping season when newly-weaned coyotes venture out on their own for food and water.“Just like us, they're trying to find reprieve from the heat. Their figures for 2018 show coyote incidents are down compared to last year. In 2017, there were 142 coyote attacks. More than halfway through 2018, San Diego is on track to stay below that number, with 64 attacks.According to the website, there have been six reported pet deaths this year.“I believe we were getting one to two calls earlier this season. Another recommendation: don’t leave food or water outside your home. Pet owners should also stay alert in the morning and evening when coyotes are especially active. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The remains of a Kansas Marine who fought in World War II have been identified.U.S. Marines Corps Reserve Pfc. Raymond Warren was killed in 1943 during the Battle of Tarawa, according to the Associated Press. After his burial site was discovered in 2015, his nephew, Warren Cooper, of San Diego, and niece submitted mouth swaps for DNA testing, The Wichita Eagle reported.This month, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency announced Warren's remains were identified in part through DNA analysis.RELATED: Veterans honor 75th anniversary of Battle of Iwo JimaWarren was awarded the Silver Star after his death and is eligible to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.“We figured that enormity of the sacrifice and the great honor it is to be buried at Arlington tipped that in the (direction) of him being buried there,” Cooper told the AP.According to the agency, Warren was part of Company K, 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force, where they faced Japanese troops on the island of Betio in the Gilbert Islands region. The day before, Bry spent time with her supporters and worked to drum up more support from voters.With his family by his said, Todd Gloria cast his ballot on Tuesday at the County Registrar of Voters in Kearny Mesa. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The South Bay continues to be devastated by the coronavirus, with several of the hardest hit ZIP codes in the region.According to San Diego County data, the hardest hit ZIP code is 92154. The area, which includes Otay Mesa and parts of Imperial Beach, has the most cases in all of the county. In the last 30 days, cases have jumped from 3,290 to 4,528. Over 1,200 of the cases in this ZIP code happened in the last month.Other ZIP codes in the region have more than doubled their case rate in recent weeks. These ZIP codes have a large Latino population; Latinos have been disproportionately impacted by the pandemic, making up a majority of the county's positive cases while only making up roughly 34% of the population.INTERACTIVE MAP: CONFIRMED COVID-19 CASES IN SD COUNTYNancy Maldonado from the Chicano Federation said it's no surprise the region continues to see the high number in cases.
