The first rhino, Edward, was born at the park on July 28.“We are so excited to welcome another healthy calf to the rhino crash at the Nikita Kahn Rhino Rescue Center,” said Barbara Durrant, of San Diego Zoo Global. “We are very pleased Amani did so well with the birth of her first calf, and she is being very attentive to her baby. The calf is up and walking, and nursing frequently, which are all good signs. Not only are we thankful for this healthy calf, but this birth is significant, as it also represents a critical step in our effort to save the northern white rhino from the brink of extinction.”Southern white rhinos are designated as "near threatened" on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species. There are an estimated 18,000 southern white rhinos left in the wild.San Diego Zoo hopes that the science used to successfully breed the southern white rhino lead to the genetic recovery of the subspecies northern white rhino, of which only two remain on the planet and are females. Once the science is perfected, the zoo says southern white rhinos could serve as surrogates for embryos of their northern counterparts. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- California health officials released new guidelines for indoor and outdoor youth sports, whether it is school-related, community sponsored, or club sports.The new guidance from the state’s Department of Public Health also applies to recreational adult sports.According to the state, inter-team competitions will not be allowed until Jan. 25, 2021, at the earliest. State officials will revisit this plan during the first week of January to see if any changes need to be made.Players and teams are allowed to practice, but health and safety measures -- such as social distancing -- must be in place.In the new guidelines, sports are categorized by indoor or outdoor, and then they are classified under three categories: low-contact, moderate-contact, and high-contact. The sports are then grouped based on risk tier.For San Diego County, which is in the state’s purple tier as of Dec. 15, only outdoor low-contact sports -- which includes golf, tennis, and swimming -- are allowed to compete.Once the county reaches the red tier, sports like baseball, softball, and cheerleading will be able to compete.Sports such as basketball, football, soccer, and volleyball would not be allowed to compete until San Diego County is in the state’s orange tier.The state’s new guidance comes months after children, parents, and coaches held rallies and voiced their frustrations about not being able to play.Because of the state’s rules, many teams -- specifically baseball and soccer -- have traveled to states like Arizona to play competitively because of less strict rules.Under California’s new guidance, teams can only compete against teams from the same county, and they cannot compete outside of the state.Click here to view the state's complete guidelines 1777

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Arson investigators Saturday were looking into multiple fires set within a three-mile radius of each other in Ocean Beach and Point Loma.The first fire was set at about 1 a.m. on Muir Ave. in Ocean Beach. Three more fires were set on Piedmont Dr. and Catalina Pl. in the Point Loma area, San Diego Fire-Resuce Department said.No structures were damaged and no injuries were reported. Each fire was set in rubbish behind homes, according to SDFD. Due to the proximity and similarities between the small fires, fire officials said the fires were "suspicious" and arson investigators were looking at whether they were connected. No arrests have been made."The San Diego Metro Arson Strike Team (MAST) is investigating several suspicious rubbish fires which occurred last night in the Point Loma and Ocean Beach communities. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - California’s Republicans are hoping to grow the party’s numbers in the state despite current odds.Roughly a quarter of California’s voters are registered Republican and in San Diego the GOP is seeing people jump ship.The San Diego GOP has lost thousands of voters in the last year with San Diego County Voter Registrar reporting 491,783 Republicans in May of 2018— compared to a little more 500,000 in May 2017.“A lot of that is the bullying or the stereotyping that goes on with being a conservative,” said Justin Clark, a 19-year-old conservative running for state assembly in Los Angeles, “you have a lot of people not wanting to identify as conservative, but a large portion of those 'undeclared to say' voters are.”The number of undeclared voters in San Diego is 476,186 in 2018 compared to approximately 461,000 just a year ago.“Whether your for or against the two-party system is irrelevant,” said Clark, “but its how those people feel. It’s why those decline to state numbers keep going up because they want to stay with them, they want to identify as them.”Among the California GOP’ers convening in San Diego the first weekend in May are other young faces.Morgan Murtaugh is a 25-year-old former news anchor running for Congress in California’s 53rd District, which is currently held by incumbent Democrat Susan Davis.Murtaugh says she’s gotten death threats over her conservative political leanings.“I mean my grandparents immigrated here from Mexico,” said Murtaugh, “I’m Mexican and I’m a woman. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Crews responded Wednesday afternoon to two brush fires that scorched an area near Mission Trails Regional Park. According to firefighters, the fire broke out near Hemingway Drive and Jackson Drive around 1:40 p.m. At this time, it's unclear if any homes are being evacuated.Once crews arrived, they discovered that two spot fires were burning in the same area.
