SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – The two candidates hoping to become San Diego’s next mayor cast their ballots on Tuesday morning, and both Democrats had messages to voters on Election Day.Barbara Bry and her husband dropped off their ballots at a library in La Jolla on Tuesday. The day before, Bry spent time with her supporters and worked to drum up more support from voters.With his family by his said, Todd Gloria cast his ballot on Tuesday at the County Registrar of Voters in Kearny Mesa. On Monday, he had Gov. Gavin Newsom help him campaign through a virtual phone bank.After carrying out their civic duty, both candidates had messages for San Diego voters.“People hear our message of change for our city. Our focus isn’t on small issues like vacation rentals and scooters, but the big issues like homelessness, housing affordability, and transportation,” Gloria said.Bry said, “We built a grassroots volunteer effort with residents from all over this city. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Tommy Bahama is known for its selection of tropical clothes and button-up shirts, but will soon add exotic drinks and dishes to its list in Mission Valley.The retail chain says it's set to open a Tommy Bahama Marlin Bar at Fashion Valley Mall in Spring 2020. It will be the company's fourth San Diego store.The 7,200-square-foot retail-restaurant concept will combine a retail shop selling the company's line of men's and women's sportswear and home decor with a casual restaurant and bar offering food and cocktails.RELATED: Margaritaville Island Resort coming to San DiegoTommy Bahama didn't say where within Fashion Valley the location would be placed. 10News has reached out to the mall for comment, but have yet to hear back.Judging by the menu at other locations, guests can expect cocktails with a tropical kick, like margaritas, mai tais, and mojitos, and dishes like mahi mahi, avocado salad, tacos, burgers, and more.Tommy Bahama currently has more than 160 retail locations across the country, with 17 of those locations doubling as Marlin Bars or retail-restaurant stores. 1111
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego County Board of Supervisors Wednesday voted 4-1 in favor of Otay Ranch Resort Village 13, a mixed-use community to be developed near the city of Chula Vista.When completed, Otay Ranch Resort Village will feature 1,938 homes, a fire station, sheriff's station, trails, an elementary school, parks and open space, according to a county staff presentation."We must have more housing that is well-planned, that is walkable, bikeable, and smart net zero housing such as this proposal," said nearby resident Richard Richardson.Proposed by developers Baldwin & Sons and Moller Otay Lakes Investments, Otay Ranch Village is located less than a mile east of the city of Chula Vista and 12 miles southwest of the community of Jamul.The county Planning Commission voted 4-2 in favor of approval, and the county Planning & Development Services department also recommended approval.Several environmental groups urged the board to table the project until the county resolves issues over its Climate Action Plan, along with species protection concerns and wildfire hazards."The amount of greenhouse gas here is substantial," said Dr. Peter Andersen, a Jamul resident and member of the Sierra Club. Board Chairman Greg Cox said the project has "gone above and beyond" to address greenhouse gas emissions.Cox said the county is facing a housing shortage emergency, and Otay Ranch Resort Village is "one that's better designed than most I've seen" in terms of fire safety. "I believe this is a good project that checks all the boxes," he added.Although he praised the overall project, Supervisor Nathan Fletcher cast the lone no vote."My reluctance today is that we're very close to resolving a series of lawsuits and there's an effort to get a legally enforceable climate action plan, and then we can assess this project," he said.The county's plan has been the subject of several legal challenges. In June, a three-judge panel of the 4th District Court of Appeal in San Diego also found that reliance on carbon offsets was not legal, and shouldn't be used as a mechanism to allow general plan amendments to move forward.Fletcher said that while the Otay Village project is consistent with the density requirements in the county General Plan, his concerns over the use of carbon offsets prevented him from voting yes on Wednesday.Supervisor Jim Desmond said that despite problems with the Climate Action Plan, the county shouldn't have to stop all development.The board vice chairman also said that Otay Ranch Resort Village 13 complies with the county's Multiple Species Conservation Program, and received the blessing of San Diego County Fire Chief Tony Mecham. "This project of all the projects [brought] before this board is probably the safest from a fire safety standpoint," he said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - There's a stretch of Linda Rosa Avenue in Bird Rock that winds up a hillside and leads to homes with sweeping views of San Diego's coastline.The homes that enjoy that view, however, vary quite a bit. Some are older, smaller, and were built in the 1960s.Others are modern, and tower above the rest. Some refer to those larger homes as "McMansions," and wonder how they keep getting approved without any pushback from neighbors to protect community character."They basically skirt the reviews," said Dave Ish, who lives in an older home on Linda Rosa.READ?JON HORN'S ORIGINAL LOOK AT 'MCMANSIONS'Developers are able to skip the lengthy and public Coastal Development Permit process as long as they retain at least 50 percent of a structure's exterior walls. It's spelled out in city code. That's why McMansions are popping up in San Diego's coastal neighborhoods. But it turns out the city's 50-percent exemption creates even more flexibility for developers because they can get permit after permit with no waiting period in between.RELATED: Coronado neighbors worried about historic mansion turned transitional homeDeveloper Ben Ryan, of Tourmaline Properties, did that for an ocean-view home on Linda Rosa.In October, the city issued him a permit to add a closet and convert a garage to a carport, under the 50-percent exemption. "Obviously it was just a temporary deal," Ish said. "Nothing was finished, it was this bowed out paneling, these windows weren't finished. It may have been a quick job, but it changed the layout of the home enough to allow Ryan to alter the design for a larger project.Ryan got a new permit later in February - again under the 50-percent exemption - calling for a second story, master suite, decks, kitchen, living room, dining room, and more. Today, the home is just half a wood frame - the closet and carport nowhere in site. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The wife of Cal Fire San Diego fire engineer Cory Iverson spoke to 10News about her life following her husband's death while he battled the Thomas Fire last year.Cory Iverson died December 14th battling the Thomas Fire in Ventura County. The 32-year-old fire apparatus engineer died after he getting caught in a swarm of spot fires in the Fillmore area.He leaves behind his wife Ashley, their 3 year old daughter Evie, and baby Taylor, due in May.Ashley Iverson described her life following her husband's death as the "most horrible and wonderful and terrible and amazing" experience she's ever endured."It's ceaseless," Iverson said of the outpouring of support following her husband's death.
