SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Scooter riders near the beach are checking their rides a little closer following reports of a group of vandals cutting the brake lines on Byrd scooters in Pacific Beach. "That actually happened to me once in Key West. I had rented scooters and somebody had cut the gas line and we had to walk several miles,” said Jamie Gustine. It was a gas line then, but Jamie says now she’s forced to worry about cut brake lines when she rides. "My kids have ridden them, I have an 8 year old and a 12 year old who was riding the scooter as well, so that's where it scares me the most," she continued. Several people took to social media after the holiday weekend reporting a group of people cutting brake lines on Byrd scooters in Pacific Beach. "It's always something you're thinking about as a parent,” said Michael Cole. Michael Cole, thinking about it as he teaches his 7-year-old daughter to ride. "Somebody is eventually going to get hurt when you're doing something like that, especially down here by the beach, you grab a scooter, you're not thinking that someone cut the break lines."San Diego Police say you should contact the scooter company directly so they can remove the damaged scooters from the streets. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego State University is warning students that they will need to be re-vaccinated against meningitis after Walgreens gave out shots at non-optimal temperature.According to The Daily Aztec, Walgreens recently discovered that the meningococcus B vaccines, given to 350 students on October 5 and 8, weren’t given at the right temperature.The company says its reaching out to students who received them. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego's Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) is introducing a pilot program aimed at reducing fines and plans to move to a zero-emission fleet by 2040.MTS' Board of Directors approved the pilot program recently that will give fare violators new options to pay citations and lower fines. Under the new policy starting in September:Passengers have 120 days to pay fines to MTS in-person at the Transit Store or by mail;Passengers who can't pay a fine can instead perform 3-4 hours of community service through the San Diego Food Bank, with more organizations potentially added later;Passengers can appeal a fare violation within 15 days of the citation;Only citations not paid within 120 days will proceed to criminal courts.The transportation agency says it also plans to convert 800 buses to zero-emissions, most of which will be electric, by 2040.Currently, MTS' zero-emissions pilot program includes eight electric buses, and infrastructure and hardware for 12 new charging stations. The pilot program started in October 2018 and costs about .4 million.MTS plans to purchase its last natural gas buses in 2028.The agency operates about 95 bus routes and three Trolley lines in San Diego County. 1227

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Saturday marked the first weekend San Diego County restaurants were under indoor dining restrictions and they've gotten creative to stay afloat during the pandemic.Monday the Governor announced San Diego County joined the state's watch list due to the spike in coronavirus cases.The county announced bars, restaurants, wineries, movie theaters, zoos, museums, and cardrooms will need to shutter indoor operations Monday night at midnight.Saturday on Harbor Island, Coasterra debuted a "pop up" dining experience on their 'float' that normally hosts events.Executive Chef and Partner in the Cohn Restaurant Group, Deborah Scott thought their event space on the water (dubbed The Float) was a perfect place for extra seating. Their sister restaurant Island Prime had to close it's doors, due to the new restrictions.So the Island Prime, moved to an island.On the 'float' they can seat up to 68 people, that's 68 plates that Island Prime can now sell at a time. Scott said they were booked Saturday, their first official night, but are not filling it to capacity.She said they want to make sure things run smoothly."My biggest fear is that everyone is going to come out here and have dinner and go, 'Can you just move Island Prime out here?'" She said chuckling. The same sentiment was shared in Escondido where they kicked off the first weekend of street-side dining.One lane in both directions down Grand Avenue is shut down between Maple and Juniper Streets to make way for the extra tables, chairs and umbrellas.A huge opportunity for indoor venues like The Grand Tea Room.Owner of The Grand Tea Room Lousia Magoo said inside she can seat about 50 people, "so bringing more out here, I could probably seat 30 people at a time so it really means everything to us."Magoo also sits on the Downtown Business Association Board and said they've dedicated ,000 in supplies for the restaurants to help with creating their outdoor dining space.Saturday she said they handed out 50 umbrellas and are expecting more tables and chairs Monday, providing San Diegans a dose of normalcy both on the water and curbside. 2134

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Scripps Research scientists have figured out how to reverse the desire to drink in alcohol-dependent rats. According to a news release, the researchers were able to use lasers to temporarily inactivate a specific circuit in the brain to reverse the behavior. “This discovery is exciting—it means we have another piece of the puzzle to explain the neural mechanism driving alcohol consumption,” says Olivier George PhD, an associate professor at Scripps Research and senior author of the new study.Though the discovery is exciting news for science, researchers say the treatment is far from ready for human use. George says he believes that the discovery will open the door to developing drug and gene therapies to treat alcohol addiction. “We need compounds that are specific to this neuronal circuitry,” George says. In the U.S., more than 15 million adults suffer from alcohol use disorder, according to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. 991
