"And that if it exploded or got worse then we could give her the IP pen and then take her to the ER."Hughes-Findley's daughter wasn't seen by a doctor in person, but her issue was solved. All without him having to leave his job."Once it subsided I went back to work," Hughes-Findley said.With just a few steps, Hughes-Findley can go from work to the Kaiser Permanente Integrated Care Room that's been set up at his job. There, he can connect with a doctor by chat, phone, or even video.The doctor can help employees take their temperature and even their blood pressure. They have access to all of the patient's medical records, so they can give a complete assessment and even make follow up appointment.Dr. Pierre Onda with Kaiser Permanente helped develop the pilot program to test a new concept in health care and said he believes this is the future of health care. His team has found virtual care can often be more efficient than in person treatment."There is maybe 50 to 60 percent of the problems that people are coming in can be addressed through that venue," Dr. Onda said. "So certainly not all of the problems but a significant portion of those problems can be managed."Other factors? Cost and convenience. Americans pay more for in person visits, and Onda says making it easier to connect with you doctor, makes it easier for your doctor to provide excellent care."To me this is just a way where I can extend the care and that I already do more conveniently for my patients," Dr. Onda said. 2477

Three of America's largest grocery chains, Kroger, Walmart and Wegmans, have joined ALDI and Target in issuing a recall for peaches in connection with a nationwide Salmonella outbreak.On Saturday, Prima Wawona expanded a recall of peaches shipped by the company to include those bagged and loose peaches that had been sold across the country.The new recall includes Kroger stores and its affiliates — including Jay-C, King Soopers, City Market. Fry's, Ralphs, Food 4 Less, Foods Co. and Smiths — as well as peaches sold at Walmart and Wegmans.The possibly contaminated fruit was sold between June 1 and Aug. 3Consumers should not eat the peaches. Instead, the CDC says to throw them away, even if some of them were eaten and no one has gotten sick.Once the peaches have been discarded, health officials suggest washing and sanitizing the places where the produce was stored, like countertops, refrigerator drawers and shelves. The CDC also urged restaurants, retailers, suppliers and distributors not to sell or ship the recalled peaches.The FDA also advises that anyone who doesn't remember when they purchased Prima Wawona peaches or those that aren't sure who supplied their peaches should throw away peaches in their fridge out of an abundance of caution.As of August 19, 2020, CDC is reporting a total of 68 Salmonella cases across nine states.The CDC is investigating to find the source of contamination and to identify other retailers that may have sold tainted peaches.Symptoms of Salmonella infection include:Most people infected with Salmonella develop diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps six hours to six days after being exposed to the bacteria.The illness usually lasts four to seven days, and most people recover without treatment.In some people, the illness may be so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized. There's a new app out there that's promises to help people check for skin cancer. It's called Miiskin.It's the first app to use artificial intelligence to do full-body skin mapping. It also uses augmented reality to track how moles, freckles and skin change over time.Doctors say apps like these can actually help during this pandemic.“That has led to a significant decrease in visits for screening such as colon cancer, lung cancer, and skin cancer is of course one of those that actually is affected by the pandemic,” said Dr. Arturo Loaiza-Bonilla with Cancer Treatment Centers of America.When doctors and patients are dealing with cancer, time is of the essence.Tools like this app don't replace doctor's visits, but they can help with early detection.“One month of losing a cancer that was just newly found is almost a 10% increase in mortality, so if the screening comes a year later when the cancer is already starting, then we are in a pretty dark situation,” said Loaiza-Bonilla.Doctors at the Cancer Treatment Centers of America say that while the apps shouldn't replace a full physical assessment, they can be used as an additional tool to track new moles and see how certain things develop.If you are at a higher risk for skin cancer and want to use one of these apps, it's important that you do so under doctor supervision.These apps are still not considered a medical device.Doctors hope these tools can eventually be paired with medical records, so patients can be empowered by knowing more about their own health. 1537

This is supposed to be the first week of class for many Washington state schools. But exactly when students in some districts will go to class remains a mystery.Teacher strikes in two districts have already forced the cancellation of classes on their first day of school Tuesday.Evergreen Public Schools are closed because no deal has been reached between the school district and the Evergreen Education Association over salaries.Negotiations are ongoing, and the school district said it will give parents at least 24 hours' notice before classes will begin.The Washougal School District also missed its first day of school Tuesday due to a strike by the Washougal Association of Educators.School district representatives met with union members and mediators Monday to try to reach an agreement on teacher salary increases."The district and the association have worked hard to reach an understanding but, unfortunately, we were not able to come to an agreement," district Superintendent Mary Templeton said.Four other state school districts, which are scheduled to start classes Wednesday, could have those plans derailed by strikes over salaries and benefits.Vancouver Public Schools, Longview Public Schools, Battle Ground Public Schools and the Hockinson School District all announced that negotiations are continuing with teachers and mediators.The Hockinson School District said it's hoping to start classes on time but is asking parents to have backup plans for their children, just in case. 1515

There have been plenty of presidential elections when Nebraska hasn't cross too many minds. After all, it's a relatively conservative state where President Donald Trump won by 25 points in 2016. But this election, Democrats aren't forgetting about Nebraska, or more specifically, Omaha. DOING THINGS DIFFERENTLY Nebraska and Maine are the two states that award their Electoral College votes based off results in individual congressional districts. For instance, in 2008, John McCain and Barack Obama both received Electoral College votes from Nebraska. In Nebraska, two Electoral College votes goes to the statewide winner and one Electoral College vote goes to the winner in each of the state's three congressional districts. A total of five Electoral College votes is at stake. While Trump will again carry the statewide vote and two of the state's congressional districts, it is unclear what will happen in the 2nd Congressional District, which includes Omaha, Nebraska. Democrats believe there is a chance. "For whatever the reason, there are a lot of Democrats and independents saying they are going to vote for Biden," Bob Kerrey, the former Democratic governor and U.S. Senator from Nebraska, said. Republicans aren't conceding by any stretch, although they acknowledge it will be close. "We have more people than ever with boots on the ground knocking on doors," Theresa Thibodeau, chair of the Douglas County GOP, which includes Omaha, said.
