CHICAGO, Ill. – A new law in Illinois allows prosecutors to charge you with aggravated battery if you assault a retail worker who’s enforcing mask requirements. The enhancement is part of a bill that Gov. JB Pritzker signed into law to expand workplace protections and support essential workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.Senate Bill 471 adds a penalty for assaulting or battering a retail worker who is conveying public health guidance, such as requiring patrons to wear face-coverings or promoting social distancing. The bill amends Illinois’ criminal code and provides that battery of a merchant is aggravated battery, which is normally a felony in the state.“This provision sends the message that it’s vitally important for workers to be both respected and protected while serving on the frontlines,” the governor’s office wrote in a press release. The legislation comes after several reports of people attacking workers who ask them to wear masks, like a recent instance at a New Jersey Staples store. The law also increases paid disability leave for any injury that occurs after March 9, 2020 by 60 days for firefighters, law enforcement and paramedics whose recovery was hindered by COVID-19. 1205

CHICAGO, Ill. – The national conversation continues to be dominated by the state of race relations in the United States. Five decades after the civil rights movement, there is still division.Naomi Davis and Sherrilynn Bevel both lived through that groundbreaking era and have insightful perspectives on how the country should move forward with a focus on racial equality.“I grew up in St. Albans Queens, where mom is the president of everything and all the lawns were cut and all the kids were college-bound and it was Martin, it was Malcolm and it was all great things were possible,” said Davis, the CEO of Blacks in Green on Chicago’s South Side.Davis says her organization has set out to fulfill a vision for self-sustaining Black communities.“We have a mission to create walk to work, walk to shop, walk to learn, walk to play villages, where African-American families own the property, own the businesses,” said Davis.Bevel is a nonviolence trainer, as well as the daughter of iconic civil rights pioneers and freedom riders Diane Nash and James Bevel. Both fought for desegregation and civil rights alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.“My father always talked about creating dramas that allow people to see themselves and have to decide who they were in the bigger picture,” said Bevel. Her father was with Dr. King in Memphis and witnessed his assassination in April 1968.“After I was born even, the civil rights workers were finding there will be small communities where Black men's bodies were found in cotton fields and that kind of thing and my mother shared that she had spent like days trying to convince somebody from one of the wire services to come down and report on a body that they had found,” said Bevel. “And it just wasn't news. It wasn’t news.”Both women point to education and more listening as the core path to resolution and coexistence.“We haven't been serious for a long time about educating our citizens,” Bevel said. “And I don't just mean Black and brown people in the inner cities. We have these pockets of rural America where young poor and working-class whites do not understand where their interests run right in line with other working people of color.”Davis says the path forward is a reckoning where the disenfranchised finally get priority at the front of the line, either through reparations or systematic redirection of resources.“That's the math of it,” said Davis. “If you're going to solve for disparity,

CHICAGO — Last week, Forbes named a first-generation Indian immigrant and Harvard student, Trisha Prabhu, as its youngest honoree on its 30 under 30 social impact list. Her impact comes in the form stopping cyberbulling dead in its tracks. The 20-year-old is on a quest to build a better world by combating hate through technology.“It's something that's impacting millions of young people globally and the consequences can quite literally be deadly,” said Prabhu.About 20% of students ages 12-18 experience bullying nationwide. Around 15% of them are bullied online or by text.A former victim of cyberbullying, Prabhu says reading about a 12-year-old in Florida who died by suicide after being cyberbullied forced her to act.“It just absolutely devastated me, and I knew as a young person who had grown up in a world with technology and phones, that I was uniquely positioned to do something about this, that I could make a change.”At just 13 years old, she created ReThink, a patented technology that can detect hurtful or offensive messages by a user and force them to pause and think.“What if we're able to quite literally intervene in the decision-making process? And before someone hits send go ‘whoa hold on. What you're about to say could be offensive. Are you sure you want to post that?’”The custom-built ReThink keyboard replaces the mobile device’s default keyboard and can spot and flag aggressive messages. She tested it as part of a science project with 1,500 young people.“Basically, seeing how young people behaved online, on a social media like environment, when they had a chance to rethink saying something offensive, 93% of the time, young people change their mind.”The prodigy has given multiple TEDx talks about cyber bullying over the years and has spoken at schools around the country and internationally.ReThink has now been used by more than 5.5 million young people and has partnered with groups like scholastic and the U.S. State Department.Last month, the Elevate Prize Foundation awarded Prabhu 0,000 in funding to help support her mission.“It really is just a matter of being conscious being conscious of what we're saying,” she said. “Just a little bit of consciousness can take us all a very long way.” 2245

CHICAGO, Ill. – Chicago’s police commissioner says more than 100 people were arrested following a night of looting and unrest that left 13 officers injured and caused damage in the city’s upscale Magnificent Mile shopping district and other parts of the city.Police Superintendent David Brown says it “was not an organized protest” but instead “an incident of pure criminality” that began following the shooting of a person by police the previous day in the city's Englewood neighborhood. It wasn’t immediately clear what led to the unrest, which began shortly after midnight, but anti-police graffiti was seen in the area.At one point early Monday, shots were fired at police and officers returned fire. Many of the businesses that were ransacked had recently opened after Chicago protests of George Floyd’s May 25 death in Minneapolis devolved into chaos.Brown says a heavy police presence is expected in the downtown area until further notice.Mayor Lori Lightfoot described it as “straight up, felony criminal conduct” and “an assault on our city." 1057
