SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A local realtor who molested two underage girls apologized to his victims during a court hearing Friday, while those speaking on behalf of the victims said they could take solace in the fact that he will likely spend the rest of his life behind bars.Donald Edward Hickey, 62, pleaded guilty last month to five felonies, including lewd and lascivious acts with a child and possession of child pornography for material investigators found on three separate devices.Hickey was initially set to be sentenced to a 25-years-to-life term on Friday, but the hearing was postponed until Sept. 6 so that an interview can be conducted for his probation report, which could affect his future in-custody housing considerations.Prosecutors did not disclose how Hickey knew the victims, but according to Deputy District Attorney Stephen Marquardt, the molestations occurred sometime between 2009 and 2012 in San Diego County. Hickey was arrested last year following a cyber tip sent to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.The former Clairemont resident, who worked as a real estate agent out of La Jolla, was found to have ``thousands'' of videos and images of child pornography in his possession, some of which depicted Hickey abusing children.``This defendant not only preyed on these children, but he also memorialized what he did so that he could retain a copy of the real-time abuse of those children,'' Marquardt said.Hickey's attorney, Danielle Iredale, said Hickey was molested by a local man in his neighborhood when Hickey was between the ages of 10 and 12.Hickey told those in attendance, ``I'm sorry for everything that's happened. I take responsibility for it and I hope they do heal from it.'' Despite the postponed sentencing, victims were allowed to speak Friday in case they could not attend Hickey's sentencing next month.One of the girls, identified in court only as Jane Doe 2, said she was working to put the experience behind her, and was working on forgiving Hickey, though ``I am conflicted,'' she said. ``Because I don't know how you came to be the way you are and feel sympathy for your sickness. She said she was nervous about speaking at the hearing, but would regret it if she didn't.``No teenager should be in a situation where they sit down and think about what they're going to say to a pedophile,'' Jane Doe 2 said. ``No parent should have to decide whether or not to tell their child that they have been assaulted. I hate that you put my family in that position.''Jane Doe 1 did not attend the hearing. Her older sister told Hickey that she wanted to attend, but ``was absolutely terrified to see your face.'' SAN DIEGO (CNS) - In a first for San Diego County elections, the polls for the Nov. 3 Presidential General Election will open for four days, starting today from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.In light of COVID-19, voters were encouraged to vote from home using their mail ballot. This close to the election, voters are advised to not mail in ballots, as they may not reach the registrar in time.For those who want to vote in person, they can vote early at their assigned polling place from Saturday, Oct. 31 through Monday, Nov. 2 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.On Thursday, the registrar reported nearly half of the county's 1.95 million registered voters had already cast their ballots, more than double the number received by that point in 2016.More than 937,000 ballots had been received as of Thursday. At this point in the 2016 presidential election, the registrar had received 409,702 ballots.Even so, due to the pandemic and a predicted high voter turnout, the registrar's office is continuing to urge voters to avoid long lines and crowded polling places by voting before Election Day itself.Mail-in ballots were sent to all registered voters in the county on Oct. 5, even those who had not requested one.There are fewer polling places than in past elections, and the location of some polls have changed so voters are encouraged to check the back of their sample ballot and voter information pamphlet before heading out to vote this weekend.Voters casting ballots in person are instructed to bring a face mask and plan to maintain social distance. ``We encourage voters to act early and make voting decisions from the comfort and safety of their home,'' Vu said. ``Mark your ballot, sign, seal and return your mail ballot to a trusted source. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Murder and other felony charges were filed Wednesday against a 20-year-old probationer who allegedly fired a gunshot toward his brother, missing him but inadvertently killing a next-door neighbor asleep in his bed.Manuula Save is accused in the Saturday morning death of Michael Walker, 38, who was shot about 1:45 a.m. by a bullet that traveled through a bedroom wall in the defendant's apartment and into the victim's unit in the 13400 block of Midland Road. Walker was hit once in the abdomen and died at a hospital about an hour later.Save faces life imprisonment if convicted of murder, shooting into an inhabited dwelling, assault with a semi-automatic firearm and being a felon in possession of a firearm.RELATED: Man killed by stray bullet in Poway apartment complex, suspect arrestedDeputy District Attorney Kristie Nikoletich said the shooting stemmed from a verbal argument and physical fight between Save and his older brother. "The defendant retrieved a firearm and fired in the direction of his brother to scare him and show his brother that he wasn't scared of him," Nikoletich said. But that bullet ended up going through a wall and striking a sleeping neighbor, Michael Walker. His grieving widow, Christina was inside the courtroom Wednesday, crying throughout the proceedings. 10News spoke to her earlier this week. "I'm just seeing this hole in his stomach, and then I look over, and there's a hole in my wall," Christina Walker said on the phone. She said he was sleeping in the guest room that night, so his snoring would not wake her up — A move that would place him right in the path of that stray bullet, and kill him hours later. Save then allegedly hid the 9mm firearm, which he was not allowed to possess due to a previous hit-and-run conviction involving the death of an elderly woman, Nikoletich said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Customs and Border Protection agents, along with the U.S. Coast Guard, intercepted two smuggling boats, arrested six people and seized roughly 528 pounds of methamphetamine and 941 pounds of marijuana off the coast of San Diego over the weekend, authorities reported Tuesday.The first apprehension happened around 1:10 a.m. Saturday, when agents detected a panga-style boat traveling northbound off the San Diego coast, according to CBP officials. The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Forrest Rednour helped CBP agents chase down the boat, which was eventually halted around 12 nautical miles west of Oceanside when agents fired shots into the suspects' engine.Agents arrested four people from the roughly 28-foot boat and seized 528 pounds of methamphetamine.The second seizure happened shortly before 3:30 p.m. Saturday, when the crew on U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Haddock responded to a report of a suspicious vessel and boarded a fishing boat that was docked at the San Diego Bay channel.CBP agents also responded to the vessel and found two people who did not have proper documentation to be in the United States. The agents took the two into custody and towed the boat to U.S. Coast Guard Sector San Diego, where a canine team allegedly found 941 pounds of marijuana wrapped in cellophane packages in the boat's center console. 1347

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Health officials announced Tuesday that students at three high schools in San Diego County have tested positive for mumps and may have exposed others to the contagious virus in the last two weeks.One person at each of the campuses -- High Tech High School International, La Jolla High School and San Pasqual High School -- tested positive for the virus, according to the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency, which did not specify whether the patients were students or staffers.Students and faculty at the three schools are being advised to be aware of possible mumps symptoms, which can include a fever, headache, earache and salivary gland inflammation.The exposures happened during normal school hours on Oct. 21-22 at High Tech High; Oct. 21-23, 25 and 28 at La Jolla High; and at San Pasqual High on Oct. 17-18 and 21-24.Symptoms can show between 12 and 25 days after exposure, according to the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency."We are working closely with school officials to inform the school communities about the symptoms of mumps and vaccine recommendations," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. "Because there is no prevention after exposure for mumps, people should be watching for symptoms and make sure they have all the recommended doses of measles, mumps and rubella immunizations."County health officials have received reports of 47 mumps cases this year, the most in 25 years. Mumps cases statewide, nationwide and in Baja California are also outpacing the number of reported cases at this time last year.The viral disease is passed through coughing, sneezing or close contact. Severe complications are often rare but can include meningitis, permanent hearing loss, a decrease in fertility and fetal loss for pregnant women in their first trimester. Most mumps patients recover without incident.Health officials encouraged all residents to receive the measles-mumps- rubella vaccine to protect against developing the illnesses. The vaccine is recommended in two doses at 12 to 15 months old and at 4 to 6 years old.
