We also started making people aware of it," he said.The risk of ingesting liquid nitrogen is purely scientific. Chris Pait, of the South Florida Science Center in Palm Beach County, said the extremely cold temperature can give people frostbite in their mouth or lungs."It can evaporate away in your mouth, but if you breathe that cold air in, there’s a chance that it’s cold enough to freeze the water that’s in your lungs," Pait said. "Your lungs are a mucous membrane. They need to be moist to work the way they should, so if you freeze your lungs obviously that isn’t a good thing. That’s going to cause problems. It’s almost like frostbite internally rather than externally."That’s why the science center shows off the power of liquid nitrogen in a controlled demonstration where professionals use gloves and goggles while handling liquid nitrogen. They show children how it can freeze a balloon, send a plug flying off a beaker, and, of course, make ice cream. But they serve that ice cream in a way that's safe. “When we do ice cream, the nitrogen is just there to freeze the liquid into the more solid form so by the time they eat it, the nitrogen is gone, it’s evaporated away," Pait said.Daranty said employees are specially trained on how to handle liquid nitrogen. PHOENIX, Arizona — It sounds like something out of a horror movie.A colorful beetle that may look harmless, but it secretes a toxin so strong, it can even kill a horse. When it comes into contact with human skin, however, the effect of this toxin can lead to extremely painful blisters.One emergency room doctor described it as a chemical burn.Dr. Joanna Woods can describe that intense pain firsthand."I went through an entire tissue box of tissues crying my eyes out. It felt, not like an itch; it's like I put my arm on a skillet and couldn't take it off. It's just excruciatingly painful," Woods said.Woods says she feels certain she encountered the blister beetle while watching a show at a movie theater."Midway through the movie I started saying, oh I'm starting to feel a little itchy, there must be mosquitoes in here," Woods said.Then she thought it might be bed bugs.  She saw red welts on her arm as she left the movie theater, within hours those welts were turning into big, marble-sized blisters.Welt went to the pharmacy to get medicine, the pharmacist on duty advised her to go to an Urgent Care, and the Urgent Care physician advised her to go to an emergency room.Even in the emergency room, Woods said staff appeared to be stumped by the size of these huge blisters all over her arm."I had nurses in there saying I've been doing this for 35 years, I've never seen his, what is it?"Woods was hospitalized for two days due to concerns over the swelling and treat of infection.KNXV television station reached out to Eric Godinez, the owner of Scorpion King Exterminating, who said he was familiar with the colorful blister beetle."There is a time of year that blister beetles migrate through the Valley, usually through farmlands that contain alfalfa and hay," Godinez said.They are also found in backyards, where they munch on flowers and leaves.Godinez said these beetles would only attack if provoked."If you brush them off or try to squash them, they secrete a toxin that is very lethal. It will stay released for about 2-3 months even after it's dead," Godinez said.He advised leaving it alone if you happen to encounter one in your backyard.Phoenix is home to the "Master Blister Beetle."The bug has wings, and Godinez said it was a short flyer.How it got into a movie theater, or on Woods' skin is still a mystery."I just wished it had never happened. It was excruciatingly painful," Woods said.She is now talking to management at the movie theater to get to the bottom of it.Woods does admit she does have severe reactions to most bug bites, so just like anything, different people can have different reactions if exposed to the toxin from his beetle, but doctors said it lives up to its name, the blister beetle. 2805

PARK COUNTY, Colo. — A California church leader was identified as a man found dead off Guanella Pass, Colorado, in 1974, officials announced on Tuesday.Anthony John Armbrust, who led a metaphysical church and was also an aeronautical engineer, was 45 when he and his wife went missing, according to David Kintz, the Park County coroner.Kintz said Armbrust's death was likely a suicide. His remains were first discovered in February 1974, but the case went cold.After identifying Armbrust through forensic genetic genealogy, investigators learned that Armbrust had been suffering from a terminal illness and that he and his wife, Renee, had moved from the San Diego, Calif., area to Golden, Colorado, near Denver.Armbrust then sent his church members a letter, asking them to come collect he and his wife's belongings from their Golden apartment. The couple was not seen again.Renee Armbrust's remains have not been found.Kintz said Anthony Armbrust died from multiple blunt force injuries, likely from an intentional jump or from a fall while climbing to make a jump.Armbrust's remains were found off Guanella Pass near Grant in an area with steep, treacherous terrain, Kintz said.Kintz's office began using forensic genealogy in the case in 2019 and contacted the DNA Doe Project, a group that works to identify unidentified people through DNA research.The investigators eventually traced DNA from Armbrust's remains to a relative, who helped them make a final identification.This story originally reported by Ryan Osborne on TheDenverChannel.com. 1556

PHOENIX — Besides being our best friends, there are plenty of important jobs our dogs can be good at, like assisting people with disabilities, arson investigations and police work.  But is there a way to find out what is on a dog's resume before they go through all of that expensive training?  Researchers at the University of Arizona believe they may have found a solution. It is called the Canine Aptitude Test and it is in the early stages of development. The test is for adult dogs and looks to see if a dog's cognitive behavior will dictate where they would have more success as a working dog. "With assistance dogs that help people with disabilities, only about 50 percent of the dogs who begin training ultimately make it through," said Arizona Canine Cognition Center Director Evan MacLean. That means that major amounts of money are going to the dogs with no return on investment.For those who rely on these pets to live their lives, they are forced to wait sometimes up to two years or more."If that were any other kind of medical procedure it would be, we would think about this as a horrible thing," MacLean explained. "I need this operation and there's a two-year waiting list to get it. So, we would do something about that. So we want to do something about that with the dogs, too." Shelby Smith spoke to the University of Arizona on the impact an assistance dog has had on her life with a disability."Picasso to me is more than independence ... he's my best friend," Smith said. "He's someone I lean on ... depend on to get through daily challenges that comes with having a disability." MacLean said that stories like Smith's pushed him to really ramp up his research."For a long time, we've been interested in whether you can predict which dogs will become good working dogs based on aspects of their psychology or their cognition," MacLean said. Their next step is to determine if they can see these skills in puppies as well as testing a dog's genetic makeup. 2097
