(KGTV) - A researcher at UC San Diego just got a million grant to further his work into nanosponge therapy.Liangfang Zhang, a professor of nanoengineering and bioengineering, has been working on creating macrophage cellular nanosponges, tiny particles covered in white blood cell membranes, to treat sepsis and other diseases."They can be used to bind to the virus and neutralize the virus," Zhang says. "So now the virus would lose the ability to infect the host cells."The nanosponges act as decoys, tricking a disease or virus into binding with them instead of with human cells. While the initial aim is to treat sepsis, Zhang says it has applications to other deadly diseases, including COVID-19."The formulation that we're developing for treatment of Sepsis is the same formulation that you will use with COVID-19," he says.The grant comes from CARB-X, a Boston-based medical philanthropy that specializes in funding research into antibacterial treatments. Zhang says the money will be used for his company, Cellics Therapeutics, to further advance the research into clinical trials, FDA approval, and production of the nanosponge therapy.Steve Chen, president and chief medical officer of Cellics Therapeutics, says he's hopeful they can advance the nanosponges into human trials within two years."We're essentially looking at how this platform can treat not just infectious disease or future pandemics, but you could actually have a lot of applications in any type of autoimmune diseases or any type of inflammatory diseases," says Chen.In an early study published this year, Zhang's research showed the nanosponges were around 90% effective at blocking infections from taking hold.RELATED: UC San Diego researchers testing nanosponges to fight COVID-19Chen says the research and trial period may take too long for the nanosponges to be used during the current coronavirus pandemic. KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Plaza Academy teacher Justin Gillespie is bringing hip hop production to his classroom.The class is called ‘The Beat Academy of KC’ and is the 5th and 6th hour at school for students.“It's the only program in Kansas City that teaches kids how to make hip hop production,” Gillespie said.Gillespie launched the program back in August.“It's been something I've done in my personal life,” Gillespie said. “I've been a professional musician for 15 years and it's been super rewarding.”From beats to rhythms, students take their creativity to a whole new level.“I'm excited to go here everyday,” freshman Thom Van Til said. “I get joyful when I come here, like it helps me calm down,” 8th grader K’ron Lyons said.The class is producing more than just quality hip hop, it’s also producing higher grades and more engagement from students.“Justin would probably say you cannot perform because your grades is bad, so he encourages me to like make sure I do my work,” Lyons said.Students plan to perform what they’ve been working on at the Beat Academy Block Party alongside Kansas City hip hop artists like Ces Cru, JL & Info Gates, Adrian Truth and Suli4Q. The school is raising funds to build a recording studio this summer, to make more courses available to students next year.  1328

Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin on April 26 signed House Bill 528, which makes Kentucky the first state in the country to establish a blanket presumption "that joint custody and equally shared parenting time is in the best interest of the child" in every divorce case."This should lead to less fighting between parents because we're not pitting parents against parents anymore in a winner-take-all situation," National Parents Organization Kentucky chairman Matt Hale said. "We think that'll lead to less parenting conflict and better outcomes for children."The law includes provisions to disqualify unfit parents based on histories of domestic violence or significant mental health problems as well as physical distance that would make co-parenting impractical.In general, Hale said, the new law will ensure children don't automatically "lose" a parent to divorce and parents' relationships after divorce don't have to become hostile over custody issues."What kid wouldn't want both of their parents in their life?" divorced mother Alexandra Beckman said.
