TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) — A man who killed a Kansas girl more than two decades ago has been executed in Indiana.Keith Nelson became the fifth federal inmate put to death this year and second this week.Nelson received a lethal injection Friday at the federal prison in Terre Haute, Indiana, after a higher court tossed a ruling that would have required the government to get a prescription for the drug used to kill him.Questions about whether the drug pentobarbital causes pain prior to death had been a focus of appeals.Nelson grabbed 10-year-old Pamela Butler off the street on Oct. 12, 1999, as part of a plan to find a female to rape and kill. 654

Stock market volatility is back in a big way: The Dow is set for a big rally Friday after a two-day meltdown.Dow futures pointed to a 350-point jump at the open. The Dow lost 1,378 points over Wednesday and Thursday. The broader S&P 500 also looked like it would rally, with futures about 0.9% higher. The Nasdaq, which has taken the brunt of the recent stock market turbulence, was set to rise 1.5%.Why are markets suddenly bouncing back? News late Thursday that President Donald Trump would meet next month with Chinese leader Xi Jinping at the G-20 summit eased some of investors' fears about another trade war escalation. On Friday, China reported its exports rose nearly 15% in September, stronger than expected. That suggests China is weathering the first waves of new tariffs that the Trump administration imposed on billion of Chinese exports this summerEarnings season also kicked off Friday morning, with JPMorgan (JPM) and Citigroup (C) reporting their quarterly finances before the bell. Wall Street analysts expected banks to post another incredibly profitable quarter — and JPMorgan managed to beat their already lofty expectations. In times of market turbulence, there's nothing like soaring profits to calm investors' nerves.Tech stocks have come under fire because they are some of the riskiest and most expensive parts of the market. Investors fear that tech companies may not hold up well in a downturn, particularly as interest rates spike. A proxy for the tech sector had its sharpest plunge in seven years on Wednesday. But Big Tech on Friday looked to regain some of their losses. Facebook (FB) rose 1%, Amazon (AMZN) was up 3%, Apple (AAPL) rose 2%, Netflix (NFLX) was up 4% and Google (GOOGL) bounced back 2%.Asian and European markets also came back Friday. The Hang Seng soared 2.2%. Stocks in Shanghai rose 0.9% and the Nikkei rose 0.5%. Stocks in London, Germany and France all rose about a half percentage point.Stocks had turned sharply south over the past week because investors are concerned about rising interest rates. As the Federal Reserve raises rates to keep the economy from overheating, investors have been getting out of bonds, driving down their price and driving up their yields. Suddenly, the return on bonds has become competitive with some stocks — particularly risky tech stocks.Rising interest rates also increase borrowing costs for households and businesses, eating into corporate profits. The VIX volatility index touched its highest level since February.The-CNN-Wire 2531

Television and film actress Selma Blair announced that she has been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. In an Instagram post Saturday, the "Cruel Intentions" actress revealed she was diagnosed in August, and is facing the effects of the disease everyday.I am disabled. I fall sometimes. I drop things," she posted. " My memory is foggy. And my left side is asking for directions from a broken gps. But we are doing it. And I laugh and I don't know exactly what I will do precisely but I will do my best."Multiple sclerosis is a neurological disease that occurs when there's a breakdown in communication between the brain and other parts of the body, according to the National Institutes of Health. Symptoms include blurred vision, and difficulty with coordination and balance.Multiple sclerosis affects 400,000 people in the United States and 2.1 million people worldwide, the NIH says.Blair, 46, said she's had symptoms for years, and thanked her producers at Netflix for being understanding. She said she hopes "to give some hope to others. And even to myself," and encourage people to ask for help when they need it."I have probably had this incurable disease for 15 years at least. And I am relieved to at least know," she posted. 1250

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — On Friday, a judge ruled that patients approved to use medical marijuana will be allowed to smoke it.Florida voters legalized medical marijuana in 2016. The only mention of smoking in the amendment’s language and in an intent document during the 2016 campaign was that the Legislature and local governments could restrict it in public places. The Legislature last year passed enacting laws that banned the sale of smoking products, saying that it poses a health risk.Orlando lawyer and medical-marijuana advocate John Morgan filed a lawsuit that brought the case in front of a Tallahassee judge who ruled that Florida's current smokable weed prohibition is unconstitutional. On Friday, Circuit Judge Karen Gievers ruled Florida's medical cannabis patients have the right to smoke weed in private places. 835
