SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — A teenager was hospitalized after he was shot by a police officer in Salt Lake City Friday night.According to Salt Lake City police Sgt. Keith Horrocks, officers were dispatched to the area of 500 South and Navajo Street just after 10 p.m. on reports of a "juvenile" — police did not release his exact age — having a mental health episode and threatening people with a weapon.Police say the boy fled on foot when officers arrived, and one officer shot him.Officers administered aid until medical personnel arrived and transported the boy to a local hospital in serious condition.Wesley Barton, who said he is the boy's brother, tweeted that he is 13 years old and is in stable condition.An officer-involved critical incident protocol investigation has been launched, which includes an investigation conducted by local departments other than Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD). SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 41-year-old man was jailed Thursday morning on suspicion of seriously injuring his roommate during a fight at a College Area home, police said.It happened shortly before 10:15 p.m. Wednesday at a home on College Avenue near Pontiac Street, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.The 41-year-old man and his 42-year-old male roommate got into an argument for unknown reasons and the argument turned violent, Buttle said.During the fight, the younger roommate punched the 42-year-old man several times in the head, the officer said.Officers responded to the home and took the 41-year-old man, whose name was not immediately available, into custody without incident, Buttle said.The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment of his injuries, which were not believed to be life-threatening, he said. 829

San Diegans who recently saw Hamilton at the Civic Theater downtown, or had any business at City Hall may have parked in the massive garage that's just steps from both buildings.The city owns that 1,140-space parking garage, called the Evan Jones Parkade - for the founder of Ace Parking.Many city workers also use it daily, since they get an employee discount. But the garage has also become a source of frustration among them - and in some cases, much worse. Numerous city employees told 10News that the elevators often breakdown, especially when it rains. That forces some of them to walk up 10 flights of stairs after a day's work - instead of waiting longer for the elevators that are working.But a notice posted on the city's website paints a much darker picture. It says the city has responded to more than 200 calls for service for the elevators in the last year, and that breakdowns have increased 20 percent in the last six months. "The elevators have now become unsafe," the notice says. "There is the increased possibility of persons being trapped in a broken-down elevator, needing immediate medical attention and not being able to get it."Additionally, the permit posted in one elevator is two years expired."I'm going to zip up there and hopefully everything wil work out fine," said Andy Jones, of Scripps Ranch, who parked on the 10th floor in a visit to City Hall. "That's a lot of stairs to climb."City spokeswoman Nicole Darling said the elevators are safe and routinely inspected. SAN DIEGO — A new political ad is pushing a proposition it says will eliminate a "tax penalty" on homeowners whose homes burn down in wildfires.That measure, Proposition 19, would allow homeowners who lose their homes in a wildfire or natural disaster to transfer their property tax base to a replacement home anywhere in the state. That's important because in California, homeowners pay their property tax based on the value of a home when they buy it, under 1978's Prop 13. It only increases incrementally after. Therefore, buying a new home could cause a family's property tax bill to skyrocket. A new ad released by the Yes on 19 campaign, funded largely by the California Association of Realtors and California Firefighters Association, emphasizes that point. "It limits property taxes on wildfire victims, so families can move to a replacement home without a tax penalty," the ad says. Truth be Told, the benefit currently exists in California, but only in the county where a governor-declared disaster happened, or counties that accept transfers, which San Diego County only began doing two years ago. Prop 19 opens it to the whole state. Anurag Mehrotra, a professor of finance in San Diego State University's School of Business, said being unable to transfer the property tax basis does equate to a tax penalty."The person did not light his own house on fire, he was continuing to live there. I lost my house, now I have to buy a more expensive house," he said. "And when I get reassessed I'm basically going to be charged a higher amount." Proposition 19 does more than just allow the transfer for wildfire victims. It also allows up to three property tax base transfers for homeowners 55 and older, and those who are severely disabled. They can use it for any property, anywhere in the state. Another change, however, is that inherited properties are reassessed unless the recipient uses it as his or her primary home. Currently, heirs benefit because the property tax base transfers with the property, making for a big tax break. Sales of existing homes in the country broke new records, spurred by ultra-low mortgage rates and after a three-month slump earlier this year during coronavirus pandemic lock downs.Home buyers snapped up a dwindling supply of houses in July, leading to a 24.7 percent increase in the number of homes sold over the previous month.The July 2020 surge in purchases reported Friday by the National Association of Realtors marked the second straight month of accelerating sales. June had reached its own high mark, with a more than 20 percent increase in sales over May.Existing homes are defined as single-family homes, townhomes, condominiums and co-ops.With July’s increase, to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.86 million, purchases are now up 8.7% from a year ago.
