Gab has been taken offline following revelations that the suspected Pittsburgh synagogue gunman used the social network to threaten Jews.A statement on the platform's website Monday said it would be "inaccessible for a period of time" after several web hosting services declined its business.Gab said it has also been removed from app stores and refused service by payment processing firms."Gab.com is under attack," the company said in the statement. "We have been systematically no-platformed [and] smeared by the mainstream media for defending free expression and individual liberty for all people."The platform has come under scrutiny after it emerged that suspected gunman Robert Bowers frequently targeted Jews in his Gab posts, and even logged onto the platform shortly before allegedly killing 11 people at the Tree of Life synagogue. 850

Health officials in Rockland, New York, say that a group who attended a recent party sparking a localized outbreak of coronavirus cases are not cooperating with officials.Health Commissioner Dr. Patricia Schnabel told reporters on Wednesday that a subpoena will be issued in order to force the party attendees to comply with the county’s contact tracing efforts. Dr. Schnabel said that eight subpoenas in total will be issued.Health officials hope to be able to find out who those party attendees have been in contact with amid efforts to minimize the spread of the virus.Dr. Schnabel said that the host, who was symptomatic at the time of the party, infected seven others with the virus. All eight are in their 20s, she said.Dr. Schnabel said that health investigators have been hung up on by infected revelers, or allegedly been lied to.“They deny being at the party even though we have found their name from another party attendee, or a parent provides us with the information” she said. “Many do not answer their cellphones or call back. Sometimes parents answer for their adult children and promise that they have been home consistently when they have not been.Dr. Schnabel said that large gatherings remain an issue."The risk for transmission of the virus is high and very real."The failure to comply with the subpoena is “costly.”“,000 a day,” Dr. Schnabel told reporters.“These civil fines will be declared to those who ignore us or fail to comply,” Dr. Schnabel said. “This is a serious public health issue – a deadly one.”Rockland County Executive Ed Day said that the party attendees “aren’t in trouble,” but agreed that there are serious consequences for not complying with the health commissioner’s investigation.“If you get in the way of a health department investigation, we will take every step necessary to ensure we respond appropriately and we’re talking a serious response,” Day said. 1914

Hillary Clinton tweeted her support on Wednesday of 11-year-old Mariana Taylor, who was reprimanded by her teacher in a Maryland school for kneeling during the Pledge of Allegiance. The former secretary of state and 2016 Democratic Party nominee for president said on Wednesday, "It takes courage to exercise your right to protest injustice, especially when you’re 11! Keep up the good work Mariana."Mariana's parents have joined with the ACLU after her teacher allegedly reprimanded the Catonsville, Md. sixth grader. Mariana, a student in the Baltimore County School District, has a rule that stipulates that students and staff must "stand and face the flag and while standing give an approved salute and recite in unison the Pledge of Allegiance."The next line of the rule does stipulate, however, "Any student or staff member who wishes to be excused from the flag salute shall be excused."Jay Jimenez of the Maryland ACLU spoke on the policy at a recent district board meeting, urging the board to clarify the district's policy.  "I decided to kneel because there is a lot of things I really don't agree with in the country happening - racism, sexism and the person in the White House, particularly the wall - it's not ok," Mariana said in May. "I feel like it's important to stand up for what I believe in and I want to inspire other people to do it too."According to the ACLU, Mariana was in tears after leaving the classroom as her teacher pushed to have her make a presentation explaining her actions to the class. After Mariana's parents were called by a school guidance counselor, her parents claimed there was confusion on whether students were allowed to forego the Pledge of Allegiance. "The Supreme Court has been very clear that students do not lose their First Amendment rights when they enter the schoolhouse door," Jimenez said. "The ACLU urges Baltimore County and all Maryland schools to review and update their policies to honor respectful student activism in the future, like silently ‘taking a knee' during the Pledge of Allegiance."The school's principal told the Washington Post that he agreed that the district's policy needed to be clarified.  2219

Home listings in more cities will no longer use the word "master" to describe large bedrooms and bathrooms. In June, the Houston Association of Realtors decided to instead use the word “primary” to describe the largest bedroom or bathroom in a home listing. The association, HAR for short, updated listings on the website through mid-June. In a statement, the organization said the change has been “raised and considered for many years” and was one of nine requests submitted from HAR members for discussion at recent meetings about updating MLS listings. Other requests included things like electric vehicle charging stations and balcony details.“The overarching message was that some members were concerned about how the terms might be perceived by some other agents and consumers. Based on the discussion that took place, more members viewed the terms as sexist than racist, although some did view them as racist,” the statement said. “The origin of the terms is debated, and we are not saying they are rooted in slavery.”The word “master” is not banned within the organization and members, only in their online listings. Realtors may choose to use “master” on their own materials selling a home.HAR told members the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development has already advised that use of the term “master bedroom” or “master bathroom” is not discriminatory and does not violate Fair Housing laws. Some builders have already dropped the term years ago, HAR said. According to the Houston Chronicle, at least one builder in Texas now calls a home's primary bedroom an "owner's retreat." Other builders have also made the change in the last few years, choosing different words to describe the larger rooms in the homes they design. 1755
